San Jose Mercury News Calls Palin 'Clearly Unqualified'

  • Bookmark and Share

The San Jose Mercury News, in an editorial today, called Sarah Palin "clearly unqualified" to become vice-president. The reason? Lack of experience. Suddenly  liberal members of the media, such as Campbell Brown, until now not the least bit worried about Barack Obama's lack of experience are concerned about this issue. So how to explain away Obama's own lack of experience? Simple. The Mercury News has broadened the definition of experience to include the experience of running for higher office. You read that right. Barack Obama is now qualified to run for president because he has the "experience" of campaigning for nomination. We'll get to that new definition of experience but first let us visit the lead in of this editorial which sounded a bit peeved that John McCain's Palin pick stole the thunder from the Democrat convention (emphasis mine):

Twelve hours after Democrats ended their national convention in Denver with fireworks and a stirring ovation for presidential nominee Barack Obama, Republican John McCain stole back the spotlight and some of their thunder. But his wild-card choice of the unknown and untested Sarah Palin as his vice president will backfire if voters see through it.

What the Mercury News means is if the voters become as liberally "enlightened" as they are and reject Sarah Palin. Now we come to the Mercury News' newfound concern over experience:

Picking an obscure first-term small-state governor was bold, and it may prove to be shrewd. But for the sake of the country should McCain win, it was unwise.

The decision was quintessential McCain. Hemmed in by Washington wags who warned him not to choose the vice president he liked — Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman — and urged him to choose one he didn't — primary nemesis Mitt Romney — McCain defied them with an anti-establishment conservative from outside their orbit.

The solidly anti-abortion mother of five may please the social conservatives who had doubts about McCain. And Palin made it clear that she will go right after women voters still loyal to Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton, even though she lacks Clinton's depth and knowledge, and disagrees with her on nearly everything. As an activist who took on her state's corrupt Republican old guard, she reinvigorates McCain's maverick image, which he has largely repressed over the past year.

But her selection mocks a primary argument for McCain's candidacy, that foreign threats demand a seasoned, serious commander in chief. In potentially putting her in a position to become president at a moment's notice, it brings attention to his health and his age. It calls his judgment into question. Palin may have small-town spunk and kitchen-table common sense, but she's patently unqualified for the office.

"Unqualified" in the liberal opinion of the Mercury News. And now we come to their money quote to explain away Barack Obama's lack of the experience they are suddenly so concerned about:

Republicans will argue that Palin is no less experienced than Obama. That's ridiculous. In the Senate, in organizing a stunningly successful national campaign and through 18 months of hard campaigning for the nomination, Obama proved to be as capable, articulate and knowledgeable as anyone in Congress — and certainly the equal of McCain.

Folks, if you ever need a laugh, then print out the above quote, laminate it, and place it in your wallet to pull out and read when you need an easy chuckle. Palin's experience, in the not so humble opinion of the Mercury News, as governor of a state doesn't really count but merely campaigning for office on the part of the Lightworker can be chaulked up as important experience. I guess Ralph Nader and Harold Staasen were highly qualified because of their vast experience running for office. Oh, and let us not forget Lyndon LaRouche too.

The editorial concludes with a paean to their "experienced" messiah who can do no wrong:

On Thursday, Obama laid out a contrasting vision that appeals to Americans' optimism and desire for approaches to health care, energy and the economy that differ sharply from the current course. Speaking to a captivated audience and a united party in his acceptance speech, Obama forcefully answered those who have dismissed him as all eloquence and no substance.

The Republican convention is set to open on Monday, with a new supporting cast and a twist in the plot. But Denver will be a tough act to follow.

Liberal Sexism Rears its Ugly Head

Palin  took offfice a few days before Florida Governor, Charlie Crist of Florida. No one has  called Crist unqualified for the vice presidency.

Obama's expeience consists of being a community organizer, State Senator and briefly a United States Senator.

I can only conclude the folks at the Mercury News are "sexist"

Experience means nothing if, like Joe Biden, you've...

Experience means nothing if, like Joe Biden, you've been dazed and confused for years. Most of any lucid Biden moments have been spent using other people's thoughts and words.

If Sarah Pilan believes the things I think she does, she is an outstanding choice.

qualified

She has more experience than obama.  If something should happen to Mc Cain, she can simply do what obama  has already done.  Choose an elder statesman for her VP.

Wait till Osama hears about this!

The San Jose Mercury News may have ended terrorism as we know it. Wait until Osama hears about Obama's "stunningly successful campaign"

Osama Bin Laden (speaking to a cave-full of believers): I hear this Obama fellow ran a stunningly successful campaign for 12 months. I laugh at this Obama and his little. . .what? . . . OH?

You mean he ran a stunningly successful campaign for 18 months? Why wasn't I informed?! That does it, I quit. No more. I can't compete with that kind of brilliance. I'm going back to daddy's construction business. . . .Ahmed, take a letter.

Stunningly successful

To a liberal that means he got less than 50% of the vote. Lucky to have done that.

These people can make

These people can make themselves believe anything.

She's way more experienced than the Street Organizer.  She's a chief executive who has actually had to accomplish things.  All Obama's ever done is run for office.

Well put...

Do any us of really think that a Republican could get away with Community Organizer on his resume?  Give me a break - this guy was a freaking loser until some figured out they could use him as an empty vessel to get what they wanted.

MSM = PR firm for the Democrat Party

Tom Brokaw's opinion on qualifications ...

On Meet the Press this morning, Tom Brokaw interviewed Tim Pawlenty, who said: "She has as much or more experience as Barack Obama, who's running for president." Here's Brokaw's response, and his beliefs about what makes Obama qualified:

  • Barack Obama has been before the American people for more than 20 months now.  (20 months! How long have we known Paris Hilton or Britney Spears?)
  • He has debated 20-some times against some very tough opponents. (Dennis Kucinich!)
  • He's participated in one-on-one interviews around the world. (Interviews! He's been interviewed!)

He's been vetted, in effect, by the American people ..." (No, he's been vetted by the Democrat party, half of whom didn't vote for him.)

Brokaw also said: "And of course, what this party cannot afford to do is to boot two in a row when it comes to a big storm hitting the Gulf Coast." (Now that we have a Republican governor in place in Louisiana, and we all know that Mayor Nagin is worthless, I'm sure things will be different.)

I am sick of the word

I am sick of the word "clearly."

I love how the liberals always use "clearly" when they are stating their claims, as in "if you can't see that, you're an idiot!"

Either that or they state their opinion and then end with "That's a fact."

As if that makes it irrefutable.

Clearly

"Clearly" is the liberal tactic of saying something that they don't want to have to prove. It's the form of logical syllogism used by most liberal arguments: a conclusion unattached to premises.

Or they preface their

Or they preface their opinion with, "The fact of the matter is...".  Drives me nuts every time I hear it.

in the eyes of the beholder

Obama's experience is laughable.  He's not running on his record, because you'd have to have one first.

Anyone else notice how many times we've been told about his community organizer experience? How many stories on the actual community have we seen?  Look up Altgeld Gardens. It got the Obama touch.

So running for president is qualifications for the presidency?

Well then, the Obama-Biden Laden ticket is practically Winston effin' Churchill.

Such shallow thinkers

"But her selection mocks a primary argument for McCain's candidacy, that foreign threats demand a seasoned, serious commander in chief."

Liberals are such shallow thinkers. Sarah's been the Commander in Chief of the Alaskan Nation Guard for over two years. That makes her both serious and seasoned. Keep digging, liberals, for that intellectual hole you inhabit seems to collapsing in on itself faster and faster.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

In the liberal universe she is totally unqualified. She is not pro-death, she is pro life. she is married to someone of the opposite sex. She is not ashamed of America. She has not cheated, stolen, lied or associated with racists, terrorists, or real estate crooks. She is not part of the Washington click and is not a darling of the MSM.

Talk about being un-knowledgeable

"Obama proved to be as capable, articulate and knowledgeable as anyone in Congress. . . ."

BHO couldn't even announce his VP nominee correctly.  What's worse, though, was his utter ineptitude on the Russian invasion of Georgia.  It was so embarrassing to the Dems that he attempted to shore up his foreign policy credentials by picking a guy who go 9000 votes in the Dem primaries; a guy who may actually use more words and say less than BHO himself; who has been continually proved wrong, a plagiarist, a liar and a racist.  But these are the traits of a foreign policy "expert" to the Left.  Just like being unable to articulate a single position is proof of being "capable."

I for one would like to

I for one would like to know when Biden will apologise for his "Haditha" smear. I'm sure there are a few apologies floating around the internet he can rip off, and then claim as his own.

Exactly Blazer. Why did Biden accuse our Marines of crimes they didn’t commit?  Why is he willing to jump to the conclusion that our country did wrong before all the facts are in?

Biden also said the Surge didn't work (he said this in April).

That's the kind of foreign policy experience Obama has selected for his ticket? It says a lot about Obama's judgement, doesn't it?

BHO damage control

This editorial at best is little more than a juvenile effort at BHO damage control. I can only assume that San Jose Mercury management and staff has had their patriotism questioned so much that it’s made them dizzy.

Sarah was Mayor of a town

Sarah was Mayor of a town of just over 9,000 people. Amazingly that is almost exactly the number of people who voted for 'Plugs' Biden in all of the democrat presidential primary elections.

After watching the youtube video of Biden's blotto performance in PA yesterday I am feeling pretty good today.

City of Wasilla or Wasilla City is correct

Wasilla City

Sorry those be the facts.

I would have accepted City of Wasilla, but Wasilla City is incorrect. (Similar to Anchorage is officially the Municipality of Anchorage, but one would never refer to it as the Anchorage Municipality.) In my many, many years of living in Alaska, I have never heard an Alaskan refer to the town as Wasilla City.

It matters if it is a proper, not official usage. Wasilla is a City, thus Wasilla City is correct. I made no claims that this is what Alaskans call it.

Too late.....Palin has already been welcomed by Americans that consider a Governor of the Largest state "experienced" enough.

MSM, read my Lips.....It is Too late.... git a grip, you guys can't sell this "experience" thing after ignoring Obamarama's obvious shortcoming in experience via the Sins of omission.

Now we have Hurricane Gustav sucking up all the TV Air time, along with Palin's massive Press surge...Obama might get some "talk about the hurricane" Face time on MSM, but his campaign is on hold and he's standing at the back of the MSM class wondering what the Heck happened to his bounce, and his Press Secretaries (MSM) are trying to sell the broooklyn Bridge.

Maybe you can talk Obama into visiting the New Orleans Levies during the Landfall of Gustav ?   yea, that might get him back on the News cycle, front page stuff....make it happen number one...

Qualifications

This is the beauty of Palin's pick, politically. You cannot accuse her of being unqualified without conceding that Obama is equally unqualified. Obama can only shut up and accept that he's inexperienced. The only alternative is to argue that Obama's two years have better prepared him for office than hers; but she's a governor.

Kerry proved his idiocy in trying to attempt the same get-around this morning with Stephanopolous. Kerry tried to argue that Obama's foreign policy experience was his recent trip and Berlin speech.

  1. Obama hadn't taken any trip before he won the nomination, and hadn't planned to until McCain goaded him into it. Did he "acquire" it on that trip?
  2. His trip was a prolonged photo-op, in which he was never questioned.
  3. Is that all it takes to have foreign policy experience? I'm sure we can arrange to fly Palin for a couple handshake and photo-ops. And I'll bet her conversation with General Petraeus could be carried live, instead of the actual words being hidden from view.

But, there's no need. We "clearly" can concede that McCain has ages more experience than Obama.

KC, one of the idiots cited

KC, one of the idiots cited at Clear Thinker's Sarah Palin Update actually said let's have her debate Obama then we'll see who's inexperienced. Don't you think that would be very brave of Obama to debate the Republican VP candidate???

When she debates Biden, I'm bettin she can kick his butt, in high heels!

LOL

That's great! If, without even saying anything, she can drag Obama's inexperience up for all to see, then the contrast to McCain is a slam dunk GOP winner. If they're focused on the VP, it knocks him down a peg. It's like playing the B-Team and hoping to win.

You know, all of this is gamesmanship. It's not a competition of ideas, or an honest evaluation of competing theories of government. It's just the consultants playing Consultant Games, where points are scored by political stunts, staged to grab the media's attention. And this is what happens when the media stacks the deck for Obama. If Obama takes the ideas off the field, and the only tools are images and soundbytes, well then you can't complain about it being mere politics.

Which makes me return to what I've believed from the beginning: the first debate is everything. If, as I expect, McCain can get Obama cornered, the fight will be over very quickly, and Obama has no chance. The longer Obama can dance away from actually getting engaged on issues, the better for him. If McCain can pin him down, McCain wins.

grasping for straws

Is it just me or is the MSM totally reaching for ANYTHING here?  The Palin Derangement Syndrome has already reach fever pitch and it's only DAY THREE since she was announced.  I think McCain clearly made the right choice and once elected I hope it causes these crazy liberals to move to a more socialist country and take their marxism with them.

Wasilla

Alaskan Old-timer

Ugh. Of all the buildings in town, they chose to show that dump.  Not a bank, not a clinic, not a beautiful new hospital or church.  The MugShot is a biker dive.  I guess that's ok for some, but Wasilla is more than bikers and beer.  Even some of the other bars would have been better.  The Tailgater sports bar, the Chili's, Evangelo's, etc.  But, I suppose, if one were emphasizing the impression that Wasilla is full of sagitally crested, knuckle-dragging mouthbreathers,  one would choose a place like the MugShot.  (falling off soapbox again)

More Alaska-trashing to come

Unfortunately for Alaska, the MSM will be looking for anything that will make your people look weird, stupid, backward, unsophisticated, and bad dressers.  Brace yourselves.

Obama's record

In corporate America, when conducting interviews, you look at past experiences..

Palin has a history of taking on 'Big Oil' and 'Do Nothing Bureaucrats'...

Obama, as a state senator on the other hand, couldn't even control gang violence.  How is he going to handle International Islamic Terrorism?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV0MmuRxnNs&eurl=http://exposeobama.com/ads.html

www.benbarrack.com

So now taking on Big Oil is part of the GOP platform?

Have you all lost your minds?

Pop Tech...

Gov Palin hasn't said anything about taking down the oil companies.

She understands that oil is a fundamental part of our society.

She took on oil companies that had their hands in the pockets of politicians in Alaska.

She hasn't said anything about Nationalizing the oil companies, or anything else you hear a Lib spouting off about everyday.

Think of it like this.  We support President Bush because we think that he is an important leader for these times.  We as Conservatives believe that he has been right on many issues, but on the issues that we believe him to be wrong, we let him know and hope that he changes his tune.  Does the fact that he is wrong on a few issues make us support him any less?  No, it just means that we have to change his mind, while continuing to support him.

Do we support Capitalism any less after the Enron scandal?  No, we demand that wrongdoers change or be changed and then we continue supporting those companies that are lawful.

We Conservatives demand accountability from those persons or entities who are corrupt, but we do not consider every person or entity in similar positions to be corrupt also.  And we support those leaders who honestly attempt to drive corruption out.

Then you need to change how you say it.

"Taking on corruption" rather than "Big Oil" - I heard this gaffe from McCain.

three kick rule

p,t, went duck hunting in Texas. He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell into a farmer's field on the other side of a fence. As p, t, climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing. p, t, said "I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and now I'm going in to retrieve it." The old farmer replied, "This is my property, and you are not coming over here." p,t, said, "I am one of the best computeroligist in the country, and if you don't let me get that duck, I'll sue you and take everything you own." The old farmer smiled and said, "Apparently, you don't know how we do things in Texas. Down here we settle small disagreements like this with the 'Three-Kick Rule'." p,t, asked, "Just what IS the Three-Kick Rule?" The farmer replied. "Well, first I kick you three times, and then you kick me three times, and so on, back and forth, until someone gives up." p,t, quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by the local custom. The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the computeroligist. His first kick planted the toe of his heavy work boot into the computeroligist groin and dropped him to his knees. His second kick nearly wiped the computeroligist nose off his face. The computeroligist was flat on his belly when the farmer's third kick to the kidney area nearly caused him to give up. The computeroligist summoned every bit of his will, managed to get to his feet, and said, "Okay, you old coot, now it's MY turn." The old farmer smiled and said, "Naw, I give up. You can have the duck."

Wow that was moronic

First, I would not be duck hunting. Second if I was and this happened, I would simply leave not wanting to waste my time. The absolute last thing I would ever do is let some moron kick me and if he tried I would shoot him but that is just me.

I like the way the media

I like the way the media has always obliged liberals in name calling. We always hear of "Big Oil' and "Big Tobacco" . How come we never hear of "Big Education" (teacher's union), the "Big Bar" (lawyers), or "Big Hollywood"?

Big Education and Big Bar have undue influence in politics and are responsible for insane regulation and crappy public service. "Big Hollywood" has an almost complete monopoly and rips off consumers. Its members grease the palms of politicians and create free propaganda.

These three entities are as despicable and reprehensible as Oil and Tobacco are supposed to be. Obviously, they get a free ride from the press because they are in bed with the Democrats.

Palin-Female, conservative, little experience=not ready to serve

We'll see if they can pull this logic off.

Don't want to fish in that pond.

I have been informed that Sarah Palin's lack of experience shows McCain's hypocrisy on the subject. That is justification for hammering on her. What's sauce for the goose...

However, it seems like a really stupid idea for the Obama camp to draw attention to the problem of experience. I know they think that it'll paint Republicans as hypocrites. But don't they realize that all this criticism of Palin puts the experience issue on the front burner for both parties? This is a public dialog that will hurt Obama far more than McCain. IMHO the Dems are playing their cards very poorly.
