The liberals have already come up with their excuse for why Barack Obama might lose the election in November. It wouldn't be because of his inexperience, poor judgement, or far left political views. No, the real reason according to Slate's Jacob Weisberg is racism.
The proposition is put in the title of his article, "If Obama Loses," with his answer given in the subtitle, "Racism is the Only Reason McCain Might Beat Him."
And, of course, Obama's recent poll plunge can only be attributed to you-know-what:
What with the Bush legacy of reckless war and economic mismanagement, 2008 is a year that favors the generic Democratic candidate over the generic Republican one. Yet Barack Obama, with every natural and structural advantage in the presidential race, is running only neck-and-neck against John McCain, a sub-par Republican nominee with a list of liabilities longer than a Joe Biden monologue. Obama has built a crack political operation, raised record sums, and inspired millions with his eloquence and vision. McCain has struggled with a fractious campaign team, lacks clarity and discipline, and remains a stranger to charisma. Yet at the moment, the two of them appear to be tied. What gives?
If it makes you feel better, you can rationalize Obama's missing 10-point lead on the basis of Clintonite sulkiness, his slowness in responding to attacks, or the concern that Obama may be too handsome, brilliant, and cool to be elected. But let's be honest: If you break the numbers down, the reason Obama isn't ahead right now is that he trails badly among one group, older white voters. He does so for a simple reason: the color of his skin.
Weisberg then microanalyzes the polls and conjures up his inescapable conclusion with all the certainty of an alchemist giving us the formula for making gold:
Much evidence points to racial prejudice as a factor that could be large enough to cost Obama the election. That warning is written all over last month's CBS/New York Times poll, which is worth examining in detail if you want a quick grasp of white America's curious sense of racial grievance. In the poll, 26 percent of whites say they have been victims of discrimination. Twenty-seven percent say too much has been made of the problems facing black people. Twenty-four percent say the country isn't ready to elect a black president. Five percent of white voters acknowledge that they, personally, would not vote for a black candidate.
And what of the over 90% of the black voters who won't be voting for McCain? Weisberg doesn't say. Instead he presents the sunny paradise that awaits us if only we would be so enlightened as to vote for the Lightworker:
Many have discoursed on what an Obama victory could mean for America. We would finally be able to see our legacy of slavery, segregation, and racism in the rearview mirror. Our kids would grow up thinking of prejudice as a nonfactor in their lives. The rest of the world would embrace a less fearful and more open post-post-9/11 America.
This radiant prophecy contrasts sharply with his dire end of times vision of America should we reject our blessed Obama:
If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth. His defeat would say that when handed a perfect opportunity to put the worst part of our history behind us, we chose not to. In this event, the world's judgment will be severe and inescapable: The United States had its day but, in the end, couldn't put its own self-interest ahead of its crazy irrationality over race.
...To the rest of the world, a rejection of the promise he represents wouldn't just be an odd choice by the United States. It would be taken for what it would be: sign and symptom of a nation's historical decline.
And a rejection of the "promise he represents" will also mean endless chip-on-the-shoulder moral browbeatings by Weisberg and other liberals. His article is only a prelude of what we can expect.

August 23, 2008 - 15:06 ET by rick007Here we go again. Liberals injscting the Race Card. They can't seem to get their heads out of their asses. Experience is what we need and Obama has none. Biden only has his moiuth to show for. After all the Liberals say we are headed in the wrong direction. Well for the last 50 years that has been dominated by Democrats steering the Ship of
State. So I guess one can say they are not capable doing so.
In the last 50 years what have they done to better the Blacks. Nothing they are still poor and down troden. So much for the Democratic leadership.
Economy is fine except when the Dems have control, Energy prices. Didn't we learn how they steered the nation with Carter?
High unemployment, gas lines and inflation at 12% or better. Their past record stinks and in the last 1 1/2 years they are about to do it again.

America is ready for a Black President but...
August 23, 2008 - 15:28 ET by TheBigMackDaddy... the mainstream news outlets in this country lack the professionalism, maturity and sophistication to cover an African-American presidential candidate. I live in Chicago and have seen this man fail his state senate district, fail my state and fail to put together any meaningful accomplishment in over 6 years of service. This senator of mine has always voted for high gas prices, higher taxes, less freedom but only when he shows up to vote which is not very often.
When Obama loses in November it will not be because "he does not look like the men on those dollar bills". No, not at all. It will be because he lacks their judgment, character, commitment to this country and, most importantly, it will be because he lacks their experience. As many people are aware, Obama plans to use the 45th anniversary of MLK's "I have a dream" speech to attack the content of another man's character.

August 23, 2008 - 16:13 ET by dscottThis is about preparing the field to keep the black vote on the Dem plantation. The premise being, a black president can't win and therefore only white Dems can represent their issues. It's a twofer for these racist elitist Dems, they keep the black vote and make sure they feel victimized and looking to them as their saviors. As long as Blacks continue to look at themselves as victims, they have no responsibility for securing a different future for themselves. Victims aren't responsible for their victimhood you know... to say otherwise would mean they would have to assimilate and lose their victimhood. This is why many successful educated Blacks become Repubs and those from the hood call them Oreo Cookies.

August 23, 2008 - 16:27 ET by doug1950They must know they are toast and are already preparing the excuses and the race card is already on the top of the deck, so play it now. Trouble is, everyone has already figured out Obama is a lightweight and his choice just proved it. But, hey, look at the field he had to pick from. Can't wait to hear the screams and gnashing of teeth from the Hillary stables.
I read the article at Slate
August 23, 2008 - 16:24 ET by lumpyand the majority of the posters took him to the woodshed.
Weisberg's analysis was so shallow and intellectualy dishonest that even Slate readers couldn't buy it.
The only thing I could figure was that Weisberg actually wants Obama to lose and thus decided to play the race card big time and also piss off a large bloc of voters by calling them racist. He has to know that Obama is positioning himself as post-racial and that this kind of counter-message isn't helpful.

August 23, 2008 - 16:28 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsSo racism will be the Democrat escape clause should they lose this election. Goody. The Revs. Jackson and Sharpton have promised us some entertainment if that is the case. Instead of just offering us a better choice of candidate.

P.S. I still think there are enough bubbleheads, uncounted military votes and voter fraud, to get Obama elected. We'll see.

It's so easy
August 23, 2008 - 16:58 ET by KC MulvilleIf only we had known it was this easy. Remember all those statistics about how the majority of black children are born without a father around? Elect Obama, and we don't have to worry about it anymore. Remember those statistics about a disproportionate number of blacks are in prison? Elect Obama, and we can stop worrying. All those stories about how blacks are in substandard schools, culturally deprived, exploited by lease holders? Elect Obama, and we can ignore all of it.
Of course, if we don't elect Obama, it means racism is permanent. If we do elect Obama, racism is gone forever.
This is the difference between liberalism and conservatism. Liberals want the symbolism, we want the substance. Whether Obama is elected or not, we want black fathers to stay home. Whether Obama is elected or not, we want good schools, for blacks, Latinos, and whoever else lives here. We want justice enforced fairly, whether the statistics come out equal or not. This isn't a Fernando Hideaway country, where to look good is more important than being good.
You know, Weisberg thinks he's confronting us about our racism. He thinks he's speaking truth to power. (Sheesh!) Instead, he's simply put on a journalistic dunce cap.
