Australians Freeze Carrying Global Warming Relay Torch

  • Bookmark and Share

Who says that Mother Nature doesn't have a sense of humor? First we have an August 14 report from the Lithgow Mercury in Australia announcing a Climate Torch relay to draw attention to the importance of global warming:

The Olympic torch relay might not have made it to our part of the world but tomorrow Lithgow will share in another torch relay of global importance.

And you are invited to take part.

An organisation called GetUp! has arranged a Climate Torch relay from Hassans Walls lookout to Queen Elizabeth Park as part of a nation-wide campaign to focus even more attention on the impact and urgency of global warming.

A spokesman said that through GetUp! the community has an opportunity to show the nation’s leaders how important the issue is to the man and woman in the street.

“By taking part in this Australia wide campaign the people of Lithgow can show the rest of the country that we are prepared to stand up — and walk —for what we believe in,” she said.

Anyone who can’t make it to Hassans Walls for the start is welcome to join in anywhere along the route to the park.

The Climate Torch was designed by the same people who designed the Olympic Torch.

“It is solar and wind powered, just in case the pollies need a hint, and people power will get it to its final destination in Canberra,” she said,

Climate events coordinator Richie Merzien said Lithgow had been chosen to be part of the relay because of its unique environmental significance.

So how effective was this relay in stressing the importance of global warming? You can get an idea of how it turned out by reading the August 19 headline of the same Lithgow Mercury: "Too cold for global warming relay." Here is their report on actual relay field conditions as written by Len Ashworth:

Climate change may be THE hot international issue of the moment but enthusiasm for the cause clearly wanes on a freezing Friday afternoon when the campaign moves to a mountain top where the wind chill factor is below zero.

This was perhaps the predictably disappointing outcome when the GetUp! climate change lobby group organised an enviro torch relay from Hassans Walls Lookout to Queen Elizabeth Park to focus public attention on the issue.

Ironically, global warming would probably have been welcomed by the handful of hardy souls who turned up to lend their support to the campaign on one of the coldest Lithgow days of this or any other year.

It is unknown if Al Gore was one of those carrying the global warming relay torch in the freezing weather.

The Gore Effect

So named because every time Gore set up a GW event they would experience unseasonably cold temperatures. I am curious though, a wind and solar powered torch? I'd love to know how that works.

Comment In Two Parts

  1. To be fair, it is winter there, and Lithgow is in the high ground of the Southeast coast of Australia.
  2. Har-har-hardee-har-har

true geoff, it's like Feb.

true geoff, it's like Feb. 18 over there.

Bu true, this global warming is caused by us theory is all bunk!

In perspective

It is winter Down Under.

It is the MSM's continual "Sins of Omissions" on the Weather...

Seattle is wondering what the Heck happened to August...as the Weather has turning into Late September Temps.   Lows in the 50's and highs briefly crossing 70 degrees during the "Heat" of the Day.

Chicago has the Fewest 90 degree Summer days since way back in the 1930's.

Denver was in the 60's mid day this last Sunday, and so was Albaquerque NM, and Dallas was in the Cool 80's this last Weekend.

Anyone heard about it ?   No, but we heard AL Gore is talking the last day of the Democratic Convention, we hear Al Gore got another award of some type...but we ain't hearing the Reality of Al's constant doomsday Predictions.

The same goes for BHO and Friends....everyone in the MSM is pumping up for the BIG VP push....Push for BHO's choice, Push AGAINST whoever McCain Picks.

Cold summer

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Sydney and other cities along Australia's Pacific Coast have an abnormally cold summer earlier this year?  I seem to recall a story or two about how the cold summer had damaged the usually vibrant tourist trade there.

An Iowan's opinion

Climate change may be THE hot international issue of the moment but
enthusiasm for the cause clearly wanes on a freezing Friday afternoon
when the campaign moves to a mountain top where the wind chill factor
is below zero.

That's below zero Celsius, or below 32 Farenheit.

Wusses.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

As has been pointed out, it

As has been pointed out, it is nearly the dead of winter down there right now.  But in a related story, we here in Michigan have been experiencing one of the coolest summers in a decade.  Last week, where temperatures would normally be in the upper 90's (the dog-days as some would call them), they were instead in the mid 70's.

We can harp and harp on all these alarmists all we want, most of them will not change because they have been spoon-fed BS by the media.  Most people want their news pre-processed for them (yet another symptom of this fast-food nation we've become) and are more than happy to take someone else's opinions and taut them as facts.

When the majority voice being shouted by *real* science is finally heard because things start really cooling again, they will all be left looking that much more like sheep being led by a faulty shepherd.

I certainly won't be pointing the finger at my alarmist friends, but they'll know.  They'll know.

clark, you said it so

clark, you said it so well

our summer in upstate NY has been pretty cool and rainy

I Hear You

Our summer in Central Texas last year (summer 2007) was the 7th coolest on record.

I didn't hear a peep from the Austin-area Global Warming Kooks, who have a stranglehold on the City Council (I live in Round Rock so I couldn't care less).

This year, we're a little warmer than normal, and you should hear these freaks. You would think that people in SUVs were driving around shooting people from the driver's seat. They are literally calling SUV drivers killers.

It makes me sick to think that these kook-freak-lemmings are allowed into our schools to attempt brainwashing of our children.

Slowly the truth emerges

The Global Warming fad is unsustainable and the zealots are begining to realize this inconvenient truth. Look for the believers to peak in a frenzy of ultra enviro gibberish.

Meanwhile the TRUE threat to our planet is Continental Drift. It is not being addressed because of Global Warming. We are a planet in peril.

I can help you save our planet from this terrible end if you send me $25 (USD)

Where do I send the check?....Oh crap, did I fall for it again?

Anthropogenic Continental Drift.

That is absolutely hilarious. Thank you.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Yes, people are causing

Yes, people are causing increased continental drift. Scientists are predicting the rate of drift is 150 times that of their original predictions due to what scientists call, 'increased kinetic human activity'. In laymans terms, people are destroying the earth by moving too much. Every movement a person makes contributes to pushing the continental shelves. Next week, Al Gore will present a plan to congress detailing a cap and trade system on people moving in order to reduce the devastating effects ACD will have on humanity.

Continental drift

Maybe it's time to ban loud music.
