Cracks Emerging in MSM Wall of Silence on Edwards Scandal

As chronicled by your humble correspondent  in his NewsBusters story yesterday, the UK Sunday Times took great delight in tweaking the American mainstream media for maintaining a hypocritical wall of silence on the alleged John Edwards love child scandal. However, dawn has broken over a new day and a few minor cracks in this MSM wall of silence has emerged in the form of opinion columns. One such crack was in today's Hartford Courant column by Kevin Rennie, a lawyer and former Republican state legislator,  speculating about Elizabeth Edwards making a dramatic speech at the Democrat convention. It didn't take long for Rennie to go from Elizabeth Edwards to John Edwards:

An appearance by Edwards would give a nod to decency. A story involving her husband John Edwards has been developing since late last year. You may grimace when you read that it's been coming from the National Enquirer. Early last week, Enquirer reporters observed Edwards skulking his way into the Beverly Hills Hotel, where they heard he was to rendezvous with the mother of his new baby.

Although Rennie warned about grimacing, he did not shy from providing the sordid details of the alleged scandal:

Edwards serpentined around the hotel, before reaching the rooms where both his alleged paramour and baby were staying, according to the Enquirer, which appears to have had a platoon of reporters in strategic spots. Edwards probably thought he would not be noticed when he left at 2:30 in the morning, so he alighted upon the lobby from an elevator. Reporters greeted him when he stepped out.

The former presidential aspirant and vice presidential nominee took refuge in a men's room until hotel security could escort him out and block the five reporters who wanted a few words with him. Edwards later issued a brief statement criticizing the tabloids. He didn't address the love child story, though it was the right time to deny it if it isn't true. Whether it's true or not, his behavior was bizarre for a potential attorney general.

After providing details that sound like something out of a Benny Hill chase skit, Rennie discusses the media's wall of silence on the alleged Edwards scandal:

The big media enterprises have so far ignored the John Edwards story told by the Enquirer. It's become widely known beyond the Enquirer's 1 million readers, however, through the online Drudge Report. Last week, Jack Shafer in Slate.com dissected the media bias that last summer led reporters to pounce on creepy Idaho Sen. Larry Craig's arrest in an airport bathroom for importuning, while reporters are now ignoring the Edwards love child story a year later. Shafer concedes the analogy is not exact, but it's close enough to reveal vastly different standards in treating these tawdry tales.

The love child story is not going to go away. By the time the Democrats gather in Denver, it will rival the 1996 Dick Morris with a hooker tale that broke as Democrats met in Chicago.

Another crack in this MSM wall also occurred today in the form of a column by Phil Valentine, a radio talk show host, writing in the The Tennessean. The title of his piece, "Media decisions over gossip vs. news get tangled in politics," sets the tone for Valentine's column:

The tardiness of the mainstream media to the John Edwards love-child story brings up some very interesting questions as to what constitutes news and, even more crucial, what doesn't.

The National Enquirer, not your most reliable news source, has been dogging the former senator's trail for the better part of a year. They first reported that the presidential contender was having an affair. They later added that he had a child with this woman. Most recently, they reported on seeing Edwards in the Beverly Hilton in the middle of the night paying a visit to this same so-called mistress.

Is it true? Who knows? And that's not really the point here. The point is the arbiters of news have a different set of standards as to what passes for news depending on the party affiliation of the person involved.

After giving several examples of how the media jumped upon reporting a scandal about Newt Gingrich while initially avoiding reporting on  scandals involving Democrats, Valentine questions why it seems to be left to the National Enquirer, not the MSM, to report on "inconvenient" scandals:

In ignoring such a huge story, the mainstream media have forced us to ask an uncomfortable question: Do we now have to rely on the likes of the National Enquirer to bring us the real story? Gosh, I hope not. I view the Enquirer as tabloid smut as much as anyone in this business, but when they do stumble upon a legitimate story, it is incumbent upon the news outlet to report it. Not wanting to stoop to the level of the Enquirer is certainly understandable, but it's also inexcusable when it means ignoring real news.

The really disturbing aspect of this is the arrogance with which news organizations cull the news. We all do it. We all have to. We can't possibly report everything. In my case, there's just not enough time. I perform what I call "topic triage" each day. Most assuredly, I home in on stories that interest me. After all, a radio talk show is not a news outlet in the conventional sense. But, when the Sen. Larry Craig footsie-in-the-bathroom story broke, I went with it. I didn't try to bury it because he was a Republican. It was a news story, albeit quite an odd one, but it was news.

Ironically, it is liberal blogger Lee Stranahan, writing in todays Huffington Post, who presents some compelling reasons why this alleged scandal is worthy of coverage in the media:

John Edwards Matters This isn't a Mike Gravel affair. (Sorry to put that image in your head.) John Edwards been the conscience of the Democratic Party this primary season and a compelling presence speaking out on the growing gap between rich and poor. If he wasn't going to be Vice President, most Democrats wanted him somewhere in an Obama cabinet.

Video Clips Galore! Cable news loves showing video clips, usually in looping montages. Those webisodes that Hunter made that were taken down? They look flirty and suspicious in light of the alleged affair.

It's Fresh The Edwards affair happened during the primary campaign. This isn't ancient history. What if he's WON the primary? Would he really have taken the nomination and handed the race to McCain?

Primary Revisionism Will the affair change the way we look back on the primary? Why did Edwards drop out of the race so quickly? Why did Edwards not endorse anyone until his endorsement was a moot point? Endless debates will ensue.

DNA! The press loves any story with DNA. Drama! DNA test refusals. Acceptance. Test goes out. What will happen? It's like Montel Williams but it takes weeks!

Democratic Convention in Denver happening soon. Will Edwards speak? Will he appear at all? What about Elizabeth? Oh, the drama. You'll see.

"How could he do that to his sick wife?" This whole thing doesn't play well with women voters. Or women non-voters. Or men.

"Should we care about politician's sex lives?" Whatever your answer, that's a hook for the press. As soon as the story reaches a big tipping point, the mainstream press will question the story.

"Liberal media bias" - here's the big one. Republicans have had a lot of embarrassing, juicy sex scandals of their own lately and boy, do they want some payback. It doesn't look good that the Los Angeles Times banned bloggers from discussing the story. Where's the Times investigation - seems like the story is in their backyard. And that silence you hear from the mainstream press right now? The GOP is going to "play the refs" and jump all over the media for not reporting or investigating this story. The media will eventually break down and do what they do - saturate us with the story they missed just to prove how unbiased they really are.

So far the only cracks in the MSM wall of silence on this matter have come only in the form of opinion columns. However, it will be increasingly difficult in the days to come for the MSM to refrain from reporting on this. Unlike the days before the Web, such a story cannot remain permanently on ice. There are just too many sources already covering it and for the MSM to refrain from reporting on this scandal just makes them look even more foolish than they already are.

This story has more legs

This story has more legs than a centipede. The questions for me are:

How does a woman with no career or discernible income as of late afford to live in a million dollar home in a gated community in Chapel Hill, NC.

How can she afford two rooms at the Beverly Hills Hilton and just what was she doing in Santa Barbara?

Rick Young the father and husband who took the blame for fathering the love child was nowhere in sight, one would think Edwards would have avoided Hunter like the plague since if Young wasn't around he had no reason for visiting her.

How much is Edwards paying Hunter to keep her mouth shut?

Follow The $$

Blazer,

You ask the most pertinent question: How much $$ is she getting vs. asking for from Johnny? Since he is a high roller trial lawyer, he does have plenty of $$ for hush money!

One would think an ambitious "journalist" would be after this story big time. Hopefully a blogger will dig up the sordid facts.

I don't wanna say John Edwards has an illegitimate child, folks

But the kid's got John's eyes and Rielle Hunter's meal ticket! Wakka wakka.

Hey MSM: Remember Larry Craig?

Can't help but compare this to the Craig scandal.....the MSM not only reported it from the gitgo......they reported and reported and reported.......I remember two SOLID WEEKS of coverage pretty much 24/7.......now, just WHY IS THIS DIFFERENT?

The only difference I can see is that Johnny-boy could get his hair messed......it would finish him as Barry's AG......

.......can't have that, can we MSM?

It's a "wonder" that it

It's a "wonder" that it isn't getting lots of play.  I mean, after all, it does involve a bathroom . . .

Same

On a much smaller scale we had something similar happen in my community.  A couple sheriff's deputies roughed up a 68 yo man who was on the levy after the flood.  He is a levy official so had authorization to be there.  The local big city owned paper did not report the story.  A locally owned weekly paper across the river did report it along with the two local blogs.  The next week the big paper was defending its decision with "we investigated and found no merit in the story".  In other words:  You don't need to know.

"Money is the scourge of the men who attempt to reverse the law of causality--the men who seek to replace the mind by seizing the products of the mind."  Ayn Rand

 The old dying media

The old dying media doesn't want a democratic scandal to rain on their Obama parade of this past week. When a enough time has past they will blitz the coverage all at once and be done with it, unlike a republican scandal were they keep going back day after day to keep the political wound open.

remember the republican prosperity 94-06,

as the democrat depression deepings 06-??

bingo

i think you're onto something. MSM cant release the story during Barry's world tour.

also, i dont think the mental gymnastics denial can go on much longer without some coverage or investigation....it's laughable. I've heard that it's not covered bc Silky Pony is no longer a public official and therefore different from Larry Craig, others...please.

what happened to 'it's not the evidence, but the seriousness of the charge' as rationale....???

another day or two of Obamagasm 08 and you might get something in the press....plus, the longer they blackout the story, the sillier they look getting scooped the N.E.

Conspiracy of silence

The media are suffering from the lessons of Prisoner’s Dilemma. All conspiracies have a glaring problem. If all of them need to stay quiet, then any individual can exploit it to his advantage. In this case, if all media outlets refuse to report the story, then they’re all covered. But if one or two “break” the story (and reap the rewards of being first) then all of them will have to report it. A conspiracy, once broken, turns quickly into a flood.

Their first move will be to try to move the focus on the credibility of tabloids in general, just to get away from these specifics. When that fails, they’ll eventually tamp it down as much as possible. That’s when they’ll pull out something on McCain to divert attention. They’ll probably rehash the “fooled around while his first wife was ill” canard.

Balance a la MSM

"Their first move will be to try to move the focus on the credibility of tabloids in general, just to get away from these specifics. When that fails, they’ll eventually tamp it down as much as possible".

One of the ways they will tamp it down is to interview a hundred men and women on the street and then filter out all comments of outrage, disgust, extreme disappointment, etc. and publish or play selected snippets expressing general admiration for Edwards and all the wonderful things he has done, appeals for tolerance (after all such things having been going on forever, and anyway really lots of people {especially de facto exonerated Democrats} do it), with maybe one very mild expression of disappointment thrown in just once.

That is the treament for Democrats, for Republicans it is the reverse.

Voila! Balance

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

"He didn't address the love

"He didn't address the love child story, though it was the right time to

Heck, why deny it? This is a resume booster for a Dem. If true, he should admit it asap. Then it's goodbye AG, hello VP.

Label

The MSM will have to report it eventually. I'll laugh when they don't identify JE's party affiliation, and they'll try real hard to say that he's a "conservative." If they report his party affiliation, they'll say that he's a "Southern Democrat."

I can't imagine that anyone would need any more evidence than the past 10 days to decide whether or not the old media is biased. They are. They acted like 15 year old cheerleaders during Barak's Excellent Adventure, and, now, they are blind to a high ranking liberal Democrat playing hide the monkey with a babe.

I guess the Dems will have to sic Jesse Jackson on Edwards. It sounds like it is too late, though.

such a story cannot remain

such a story cannot remain permanently on ice

They might be holding the story as long as they can in case Obama makes a mistake, congress wants to slip something by us or perhaps McCain gets some positive attention. They could pull the inevitable story out at their convenience to deflect from something else.

I just wonder how they will swing this story to make it Bush's fault.

" I just wonder how they will swing this story to make it Bush's fault."

He could break out his "two America's" spiel. In John Edwards America it's o.k. to run around on your dying wife and father a child out of wedlock with your mistress.

The sad and sickening part is, if this is proven true, if we all go back to the beginning of his campaign, he was not only campaigning on his "two Americas", he was also trying to score brownie points with his wifes terminal illness and their "thirty year love affair", while playing sugar daddy to Ms. Hunter and knockin' her up.

That's what makes this story

That's what makes this story so bizarre. Here his wife Elizabeth is saying he should run for president even while she is dying, a spouse of a dying wife should be making the most of the time that is left.  Ok, if that isn't strange enough, it's as though Elizabeth were getting replaced in the bedroom as well. So let's also consider that John would be seeing this other woman under the watchful eyes of the Secret Service, tell me if that isn't the height of arrogance by John Edwards.

Bush

If George Bush had not stolen the election in Florida, ah, O, Ohio! in 2004 John Edwards would not have been in a sleazy hotel room in LA. He would have been in a sleazy hotel room in Washington, protected by the SS. Secret Service SS. Not the Brownshirt National Police Force proposed by the Obama in Denver. Anyway, the incident, though it may have happened, had not the EvilBush cheated it never would have seen the light of day. In a sense, therefore, it would not have happened.

Never say never

"....for the MSM to refrain from reporting on this scandal just makes them look even more foolish than they already are."

After Rathergate I didn't think that was possible...never say never.

Regardless, in addition to now knowing why Johnny was so obsessed with primping, we also know what Edwards "two Americas" obsession was really all about -  the two lives of Johnny Edwards.

Speaking of the even more foolish not-speaking-demedia, the NOW gang's silence is equally deafening.  But maybe that's a good thing.

Honestly, after five seconds to learn "who did what", stories like this don't hold my interest. It's someone's personal life. It doesn't involve public policy or an abuse of official power. Extended coverage by the media of such a situation gets me channel flipping, whomever it's about.

The media's inconsistent coverage of such stories (which has been NewsBusters focus), however, is annoying. Decide how you want to cover these situations - ignore them completely, make a one line mention or go wall to wall - and then carry it out on everybody. This going easy on your "friends" but not your "enemies" is third grade playground stuff.

The left-leaning Wikipedia

The left-leaning Wikipedia is disallowing any comments regarding the John Edwards scandal for the reason: “inappropriate at this time because the tabloid does not qualify as a reliable source and current reports in more reputable news sources do not confirm the claims”.

Wikipedia further states: “If the mainstream media picks up the story and verifies the claims of the story, not just reporting that the tabloid has made certain claims, then inclusion of this accusations will be appropriate.”

A comment by Unsigned is classic: Is there a list on Wikipedia of which mainstream media outlets are considered 'reliable' and which media outlets are considered 'tabloid', or is it up to individual users interpretations? Is USA Today 'tabloid'? Is the Drudge Report 'reliable' or 'tabloid' in its individual articles? Is Wikipedai 'tabloid' or 'reliable'?

I recommend reading the other comments and Wikipedia’s responses.

Gawker has an excellent article titled: Save Your Newspaper: Cover The Edwards Scandal that addresses the declining (or as they label it – Print is Dead media).

The Washington Post’s The Reliable Source columnist Roxanne Roberts was online Wednesday, July 23 blogging about all things gossip. Here is an example of her reason for not covering the story:

Uh, OH: Has John Edwards been caught with his, er, guard down?

Roxanne Roberts: "Here's the deal: We have no evidence this is true. Lots of juicy details----enough so Edwards may feel he has to address the issue, especially if it's not true and there's an innocent explanation. Or not. That won't stop anyone from talking about it, but let's assume, until we know the facts, that this could be false."

Yes folks, it's official the National Enquirer not only has higher standards of journalism, they do good old fashioned investigative reporting, something the MSM became unacquainted with long ago.  I would put the <sarcasm> down to show my distain for the MSM but somehow it isn't appropriate, it would sully the image of the National Enquirer so in deference to them I will be respectful.

Sound, Working Mathematical "Proof" Of Liberal Bias

P.J., you have done it. You have provided the world with what appears to be a sound "mathematical proof" of liberal bias in the mainstream media. You cite the nature of the story, how it was broken, and then provide examples from three independently thinking individuals that likewise wonder aloud why this story is being waved in our collective faces like Britney Spears' pantiless crotch-shot. Just last night I was engaged in a chat room debate with some mindless blobs of protoplasm who trumpeted how "sleazy and corrupt" the Republican intelligensia is compared to the Democrats and the prime example cited -- come to think of it, the ONLY example cited as "proof" -- was the Larry Craig footsie story, apparently Mark Foley didn't make a lasting enough impression for the limited evolutionary level of their crainial membranes. I mentioned this story and it's apparent hypocrisy of Gomer Pyle's infidelity to his cancer ridden wife resulting in a love child and how the Enquirer had busted him, and the response was open ridicule. They refuse to give the story credence because of it's source. My counterpoint however was that if this had been a story about someone like Karl Rove it would be in our faces even at the allegation stage & with the TV and computer switched off. They would be putting signs on busses and printing special milk cartons telling the story of how once again Republicans were being corrupt & sleazy.

But since it is Gomer Pyle who is the most holier then thou phoney, slimy, self-serving politician to come down the pipe since Jack Elam's performance in USED CARS the traidtional press outlets won't touch it. If it was anyone else in the Democrat elite they might consider mentioning it in passing in the same manner that they report UFO sightings, though the party affiliation would still keep it off page 1. This story is the first genuine example of a working "proof" of Liberal bias in the media that could make a difference in eroding public confidence in the traditional news outlets. If pure as the wind-driven snow "Gawsh darnit, I want to be your President" John Edwards -- inspirational leader of many idealistic young Liberals whom I know personally -- is the liar, cheat, scumbag idiot this story suggests, then any one of their "noble" leaders (Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, Albert Bore, Keith Olberman, Barack Obama, Sting, Alec Baldwin) could very well be a lying, cheating scumbag douche nozzel as well.

Which is ultimately why the story must be surpressed. The concern isn't so much for Gomer Pyle in particular as the whole power structure of the Liberal machinery, which is predominantly led by complete hypocrites who's true nature is being hidden by the mainstream press in an act of willful collaboration. The way that the usually zealous traditional press is ignoring this piece is the proof that is needed to undermine the assertation that "there is no Liberal bias", and whether or not the story is actually true: It is being ignored where if Karl Rove had allegedly sneezed on his monitor screen we'd be hearing about it nonstop. All that is needed is for one brave soul at one of the major news organizations to risk their job by approving the story for publication, get it on the AP wire and not only is Mr. Edwards' political career over but thinking readers/viewers will almost be forced to wonder why they hadn't heard about this before. Specifically, when they were ponying up their campaign contributions, volunteering their time to canvas for Edwards, and staking their own reputation on his veracity. He is a liar, a crook, and an insufferable douchebag who is so cheap he takes his wife to a god damn Wendy's for their anniversary while courting this blond bimbo. And if he gets to be Attorney General there will be nobody to blame but the press for having been led to fresh water and refusing to drink.

then any one of their

then any one of their "noble" leaders (Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, Albert Bore, Keith Olberman, Barack Obama, Sting, Alec Baldwin) could very well be a lying, cheating scumbag douche nozzel as well.

Come to think about it, that case was already factually proved by at least two on the list: Jesse Jackson and Bill Clinton.  But you know why they point the finger at Repubs as sleazy?  Because it's Projection, the time honored liberal defense mechanism to distract attention away from their own failings.  Any time a liberal starts making the hypocritical charge of moral failings at a Repub, you know sure as the sun is going to rise that a scandal on the lib side is brewing somewhere.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Squonk, I feel your pain.

Squonk, I feel your pain. Arguing with people who know there's a bias but like it and know that they are in on a conspirancy - and getting away with it. In my experience these people are in the tank and videotape, bloody knives, and DNA evidence aren't going to make them concede to your well-constructed arguments.

The MSM has really notched it up this election cycle (as expected). For maybe the first time they are so emboldened that they are not denying their bias. They are arguing now that taking the "right" position is more important than objectivity. That's part of the reason everything is in "crisis". They have to take stances because so much is at stake (or so they say).

I don't think this is sitting well with the 20% of the electorate in the middle. I think that most Americans dislike advocacy journalism. We kind of have a built-in adversion to propaganda, especially from the people we want objectivity from the most. This is what people think of when they think of the First Amendment - Freedom of the Press. Freedom to report the facts without fear of prosecution or persecution. Not freedom to sermonize and indoctrinate.

I think the general public is starting to see the bias. Things like how "gossip" is treated inequitably. The "name the party" game. Obamamania. They are instinctively obvious. We all can sense favoritism, prehaps subconsciously. Worse still for the media these things can be, and are being, quantified.

The media is trying a new tactic of justifying the bias. It is all for the public good and a better future. I think most Americans resent that kind of patronization. In the end I think the MSM will only further marginalize itself, and lose even more credibilty.
