Will MSM Report on 2008 Arctic Ice Increase?

Good news! Despite the recent global warming alarmism in the media that Arctic ice might melt away completely from the North Pole this summer, the latest scientific observations show that Arctic ice has actually increased by nearly a half million square miles over this time last year. This is in stark contrast to the Chicken Little hysteria that was being promoted less than a month ago on the CBS Early Show as reported by Kyle Drennen on June 27 here in NewsBusters:

On Friday’s CBS "Early Show," co-host Maggie Rodriguez teased an upcoming interview with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair about global warming: "Also ahead this morning, we'll talk about a disturbing new report from some scientists in Colorado who say that there is the very real possibility that for the first time we will see the ice in the North Pole melt away completely during the summer."

Well, the latest information on Arctic ice conditions is just in from the National Snow and Ice Data Center and Maggie Rodriguez can breath easy (emphasis mine):

Arctic sea ice extent on July 16 stood at 8.91 million square kilometers (3.44 square miles). While extent was below the 1979 to 2000 average of 9.91 square kilometers (3.83 million square miles), it was 1.05 million square kilometers (0.41 million square miles) above the value for July 16, 2007...

So why the increase in the ice shelf over last year despite the MSM hysteria on this topic? An explanation is given:

How is this different from what we saw in the record-breaking year 2007? In early July 2007, an atmospheric pattern developed that featured high pressure over the Beaufort Sea. This pattern promoted especially strong sea ice loss. The pattern that has dominated the summer of 2008, so far, seems less favorable for ice loss...

So won't Maggie Rodriquez and other global warming alarmists be excited over this news about increased ice in the Arctic this summer? Don't hold your breath. Rodriguez and others in the MSM will probably just let their original dire global warming predictions stand without any later corrections when the scientific facts prove them wrong. So let us sign off on this latest example of global warming alarmism predictions gone wrong with a June 27 quote on this topic from Steve Connor, "science editor" of the Independent (U.K.):

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

Sorry, Steve, but just the opposite has happened. So can we also expect you to correct yourself with the latest data showing an increase in Arctic ice over last year? Your humble correspondent is not holding his breath waiting for such a correction from you, Maggie Rodriquez, nor any other member of the MSM that hyped an ice free North Pole for 2008.

Don't believe the hype

I challenged my son's teacher on the very topic. She had them do an assignment of Global Warming but she only provided sources in support of this theory. When I challenged her, her only defense was that she couldn't find any information on the other side. My son even questioned her in class. Needless to say she didn't call on him anymore during the discussion. Liberals are stupid!

"When I challenged her, her

"When I challenged her, her only defense was that she couldn't find any information on the other side."

I can believe this. Kind of hard to find info on the other side when you don't look for it.

It's everywhere!

What seemed to start as just a proposition has grown into group think. Why? Because of the echo chamber set up by environmentalists; conservationists; educators; politicians; media; this group and that group -- oh yes let's not forget Hollywood and Albert Gore.

Manmade Global Warming has gotten so accepted into everything that even some of my formerly professional journals contain articles where AGW is accepted as fact from word one and then there's the rest of the article.

It's everywhere and it's growing and it scares me to death because it's been unleashed on purpose and accepted on faith and there is no questioning just the call to cease thinking and follow the herd.

P.J. we could roll into an

P.J. we could roll into an ice age in the next 5 years and they would still tell us global warming is an issue. They'll never admit they're wrong...they'll keep lying or sweep it under the rug.

2008 less favorable for ice loss... a shame

OMG, does Sam Champion know about this yet?

I'm bummed that we're not going about to find out how long polar bears can tread water this year. Oh, well, there's always next summer.

Tap Dancing on Ice

When I read the mid-month statement at the National Snow and Ice Data Center this morning, I noticed that they did more than just change their position from July 1 to the new one:

http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

They’re qualifying their statement with suggestions that the ice is so thin that significant melting could still occur. I doubt their objectivity in the way they suggest much melting could still happen since they think there is such a long melt period yet to go. With roughly six weeks to go to peak melt, I don’t see this as a very long time to go to reach peak melt, especially since we’re already 4½ months into the melt season and the melt rate usually seems to slow throughout August.  Carefully reading what they say it seems that, rather than taking a scientific approach, they're hoping against hope that the melt accelerates. They seem to have lost sight of the principle of objectivity in scientific endeavors.

AGW is a fund raiser

All these people are running around scaring everybody they can as a means to raise funds for themselves. "You're all going to die if you don't give me money so I can save you."

Wow, the mere thought of a

Wow, the mere thought of a growing ice pack just makes a chill run up my leg.

Hurricane predictions have been going so badly

They've had to augment their fear-mongering with ice cap loss. Now that's going craps on them.

You could hear the collective whimpering when the latest (and only so far this season?) hurricane veered North and then East of Bermuda. How dare it avoid the US Mainland and the Weather Channel idiots ready to pounce.

well well

Come on back lefties. Don't be shy. Tell us again how the info around GW is accurate because "real scientists" are on the job. Tell us how the Snow and Ice Center is funded by Exxon. Tell us, yet again, that GW will start kicking in next year....

Only days ago you all were more than happy to broadcast your feelings about GW.

This just in from New Jersey...

In Northern NJ, we have had a cooler spring and early summer. It has been quite enjoyable, with the exception 3 hotter than normal days.

I note that the base line

I note that the base line for measurement is " Area of ocean with at least 15% sea ice".

My question if you have 3/4 the area with 50% sea ice, is there less ice than total area with only 15% sea ice.

They are still counting on

They are still counting on a huge meltdown.

"The images not only show the low ice concentrations in the Siberian sector discussed above; they also show that a large part of the northern Beaufort Sea is covered by ice with low concentrations of 50 to 75 percent, and is likely to melt out soon."

Long way to go, yet. At least two to two and a half months to go in the melt season.

Post Little Ice Age Melting

Sea ice melt over the past 30 years is normal and to be expected because any current global warming is a natural and logical consequence of the relative recent demise of the 500 years Little Ice Age.  The LIA actually didn't end until the early 1900s.  Would you rather have lived during that long cold period during which many millions died from exposure, starvation, disease and plague? The global warming alarmists rely solely on fear, scare and dire predictions, since they have NO scientific evidence to substantiate their positions.

The wording of this line

The wording of this line struck me as odd (not for the MSM, but odd nonetheless)

"The pattern that has dominated the summer of 2008, so far, seems less favorable for ice loss"

"Less favorable" for something deemed harmful?  Oh darn, harm is what we wanted!!!  Golly gee, shucks!!

Why not this instead....

"The pattern that has dominated the summer of 2008, so far, seems more favorable for ice gain"

Oh, am I asking for too much?

Manbearpig is real

Not surprising.  Headline screams out that the Polar sea would be free of ice this summer.  Small print deep in the article said there was  a 50% chance.  Now there is substantially more polar ice this year than last year.  Oh facts, we don't need to report those.
