Anti-American snarkiness has reared its ugly little head in this London Times travel story by Tom Chesshyre, "Tourism 'golden era' ends in Cuba." Apparently, Mr. Chesshyre believes that life under Fidel Castro's oppressive regime was a "golden era" for visiting that island. Yes, how quaint to see dilapidated buildings and people whose diets are severely restricted by government rationing. The Times seems to fear that these "good times" may soon be coming to an end and urges visits there before the atmosphere is ruined by the American tourist "invasion":
Travellers interested in visiting Cuba are being advised to go now before an invasion of American tourists begins.
Better to visit the zoo animals of the communist nation now before they are spoiled by "mainstream Westernisation." After that, they won't be so interesting to watch:
Tour operators believe that the US travel embargo of Cuba could be lifted in the wake of this week's announcement that Fidel Castro is stepping down - ending a “golden era” of tourism to the Caribbean island.
Companies say that Castro's departure is likely to combine with a more open approach to the island after November's presidential elections. This could bring an end to the US travel ban. The embargo has been in place since Castro took charge in an armed revolution 49 years ago and introduced communism. The effect has been to keep mainstream Westernisation out of the country.
Such "mainstream Westernization" such as basic liberties and economic progress. The Times did acknowledge in passing that things may not be so golden in Cuba with this reference to political prisoners:
But this week each of the main Amertican presidential contenders - Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain - said that they would consider a softer approach towards Cuba, but only if political prisoners were released.
Not all readers of this story were amused by The Times' implication of a "golden era" in Cuba:
These are the golden years? are you mad? it has not been golden for the people that live in the island, they have been through hell for 49 long years, do you realize how insensitive that sounds!
What next? Will The London Times travel writers be urging visits to North Korea before the "golden era" there is ruined by a horde of American tourists decked out in Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts? Better to visit North Korea now while the streets of Pyongyang are quaintly empty of cars and such "mainstream Westernisation" as electricity in most of the country is still absent. Watch the North Korean "zoo animals" while they are still in their pristine state of being oppressed.

"Tourism 'golden era' ends in Cuba."
February 24, 2008 - 09:54 ET by drillanwrYeah, I'm sure all those folks down in Miami and the "Little Cuba" communities in Florida and the rest of the U.S. who fled Cuba since the late 1950s feel the exact same way ... you socialist wanker.

Oh yes, you need to rush to
February 24, 2008 - 09:57 ET by USA4freedomOh yes, you need to rush to Cuba fast before they have a chance rebuild to third world levels. A great chance to ride in authentic cars from Detroit from the 1950’s. A great chance to talk to prostitutes that haveto sell them selves to feed their children. I would get there fast while the people that cant swim are still there.
As a bonus the travel people will toss in a trip to gulags in Russia, they call it the fire and ice tour. Don’t forget for those that survive, there is free health care.

February 24, 2008 - 12:24 ET by BlondeA friend of mine, who left Cuba at the age of 3 in the early 60's, went back to visit what's left of her family there about five years ago.
She wore all of the clothes she was taking, in order to use her 42 lb. weight allotment on things like soap, hairbrushes, etc. for her family.
She came back with a lovely tan (she's never tan here in Florida)...not from time luxuriating on the beach, but from walking around from place to place.
That's the reality of Cuba tourism.

Yikes!
February 24, 2008 - 10:21 ET by dervishThey might even wind up with a -- gasp! -- market economy where things actually cost what they're worth.
I, for one, would LOVE for
February 24, 2008 - 10:53 ET by drillanwrI, for one, would LOVE for Cuba to become free and democratic ... build itself up from the communust/socialist ashes, see some of the wonderful Cubans here return to share the secrets of success with them, and open for the tourist traffic that would follow ... me for one. It was once a very beautiful country ... I have faith it could be again.

The Biggest tourists in Miami, are Englanders
February 24, 2008 - 10:58 ET by JayTeeThe British invade Miami and Florida all year long....they can't get enough of the sunshine. But Cuba doesn't offer the 5 star option for hotels.
Funny you should say
February 24, 2008 - 11:34 ET by msh1973Funny you should say that....a British couple bought my in-laws auto glass business a few years ago. They had nothing but terrible things to say about their home land. Since coming here they have become part of America, they want to become US citizens. They consider the US to be the greatest place for living and opportunity.
The Secret
February 24, 2008 - 11:32 ET by sherlock1special something that may well go missing if Cuba ever actually becomes liberated is the sexual services of young Cuban men and women who will sell themselves to visiting Europeans very cheaply. They don't make much money, they just get to enjoy the good life while their customer visits Cuba with plenty of money to spend in the black market. Maybe a visit to the party-elite dentist, or a doctor who does not specialize in magnetic healing, etc., too.
It is a national disgrace that is carefully hidden. And if our own leftists succeed in destroying our economy at the altar of Globaloney, our grandchildren may will have the very same "opportunties".
Be fair..
February 24, 2008 - 11:34 ET by MudhenWhere else can they go and be treated like royalty by the desperate hoards looking for their Euros, Pounds or Dollars. Once the US is allowed there, prices will rise drastically (along with Cuban living standards.) Of course the liberals will decry how we're "exploiting" the Cubans because they finally will be earning enough for luxuries like toilet paper, meat perhaps even 'gasp' a DVD player. I can't wait for the 1st Wal-Mart to open in Havana!
Once Fidel & Raul are dead and Cuba is opened up, it will boom with growth.
Doubt there will be any
February 24, 2008 - 11:46 ET by general companyDoubt there will be any Walmarts in the near future. The folks that get to decide who gets to run Cuba, will keep it pretty much like it is. They do not want the People to have any influence, it might trigger them to want to vote. Better for them to continue to spread the USA is bad and we are fortunate theme.

February 24, 2008 - 12:13 ET by FastEdplenty of quaint '57 Chevys, being horse drawn, donw the major streets. What could be more golden than vintage cars from when autos were real cars?

February 24, 2008 - 12:26 ET by rbosqueIs there a mandatory course in "insanity" at journalism schools now-a-days?
But Is It Fuel-Injected?

come see the friendly natives in their natural setting...
February 25, 2008 - 13:52 ET by wizardjrThis smacks of chauvanism of the worst sort. If American tourists "overrun" Cuba, the economy will spring back and the 'friendly natives' will live more graciously because they'll be higher on the hog. Once trade opens, Cuba will blossom. IT MUST BE STOPPED! This sort of liberal nonsense is part of what keeps a lot of third world nations on the bottom of the world income range. If they got richer they'd be raping the Great Mother Earth just for their own benefit. In the meantime, millions are dying due to lack of wealth to improve things.
I bet Raul won't last a year, so start polishing up those clubs.
February 25, 2008 - 16:04 ET by R D HelmI have no doubt that he is every bit as ruthless and corrupt as Fidel, but I doubt he has the "force of personality" to stay the HM*WIC of that sad, unfortunate hell-hole for very long. It wouldn't hurt my feelings in the least if we were to covertly aid in his demise in some way. Even if we don't, I have a feeling Raul's head is going to wind up on a post at some point rather soon.
As for Tom Chesshyre, I assume he is of the opinion that American tourist dollars are going to corrupt the island's long-oppressed, poverty-riddled population, and turn them into a bunch of "evil capitalists."
Here's hoping he is right.
