On August 28, radio talk show host Ed Schultz, who has proclaimed that he became "converted" from conservative to liberal while eating a baloney sandwich with his future wife in a Salvation Army cafeteria, loudly issued a challenge to all conservative radio hosts to debate him. Since his show that day was simulcast by C-SPAN, the Big Eddy Challenge can be both seen and heard at almost 20 minutes into the third hour of his show:
...We'll stand up to any conservative talker anywhere in America who wants to have the guts to go head to head with me on your radio show, on your TV show, you conservatives, you're absolutely a bunch of damn liars and we're right back on the Ed Schultz show.
So what happened when a conservative talk show host took up the Big Eddy Challenge? Apparently Schultz hides behind his show's producer. Such was the case when Brian Craig, producer and co-host of The Steve Kane Show on WWNN 1470 AM radio in South Florida, attempted to arrange such a debate between Ed Schultz and Steve Kane. Your humble NewsBusters correspondent heard Craig on the radio yesterday talking about the difficulties in arranging this debate with the Ed Schultz Show producer, James. I subsequently contacted Craig who gave me the latest account of James ducking the Big Eddy Challenge on behalf of his boss today:
I called James, Ed's producer right after our conversation. When he answered the phone and I told him who I was he took a deep breath, meaning why are you calling. I asked if he had talked to Ed about debating Steve. He said, "Look, I know what you all are about."
I said, "Really?"
"I know what you are trying to do, you are a bunch of scam job artists and Ed's not interested in that."
He started to hang up and I said, "Do you want me to pass that message along on the air?" He then hung up the phone.
Through the whole conversation he was annoyed.

Suprise
September 19, 2007 - 19:47 ET by kdoliverDoes that really suprise anyone? Since the left can't debate facts they make the attacks personal.

September 20, 2007 - 13:25 ET by TruthMonger...and several days later Ed was heard to brag on the air that "we have yet to hear from any chicken hawk conservative's accepting our challenge...what a bunch of damn chicken-hawk liars they truly are...this is Ed Schultz live, lying behind the protection of my producer..."
...I had to endure a meeting with big eddy myself recently - and I know exactly what he is trying to do, too:)...
please pass the word to press him on this with emails, etc if you can - he deserves a little bit of heat at the very least...although remember he will use it against us very well...the poor "persecuted" bastard anyway:)...

Steve Kane missed the point
September 19, 2007 - 20:24 ET by Lame CherrySteve Kane missed the point in Ed Schultz was not challenging "Conservatives", but was challenging ONLY Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly........because he wants to be like Keith Olberman in his Soviet association with a superpower to look like the big testies on the scrotum of liberalism.
Schultz isn't interested in debating. Schultz is interested in looking like a big wind blown bag stinking up programs which really are listened to by millions of people. This is Hillary tying the olde apron strings to Bill to ride to the top on her no talent.
What Mr. Kane should do is call into Schultz's program and let Ed cut him off and run........and keep calling in as Schultz like being harrassed as the coward gives out phone numbers of people who he sucker punches in bars.

Big Eddy Challenge
September 19, 2007 - 20:32 ET by P.J. GladnickHere is what Ed Schultz himself has declared:
That was CLEARLY a challenge open to ANY conservative talker to debate him on their own programs. So far it is nothing but empty bluster.

"Too bad Ignorance isn't painful..."
Exactly. He wants to
September 20, 2007 - 08:58 ET by BinxlyExactly. He wants to debate a prominant TV/Radio Conservative personality because of many reasons.
First and foremost, he knows it's VERY likely he will lose. Luckily, he also knows the liberals out there usually buy into that 'NEVER EVER look down on your own, never bad mouth your own, even when we lose, we really won, we just got cheated.....etc'
That's the second part. if he debates some less than famous Conservative radio host on an AM station in South Florida, AND he loses, not only will that prove he can't even hang with the farm team, but it makes it much more difficult than if he lost to Rush or Hannity or Bill. If he lost to Bill or Sean, he'd complain that Murdoch was behind it and they presented the debate to make it look like he lost when he didn't. If he lost to Rush, he'd blame his network of the same thing or just rather pass it off as something like 'well who listens to a hypocritical narcotic addict anyways..'
Spinning it to the positive would be tough if he lost on an AM station that many may not have heard of. he knows that'd be the final nail in the coffin. Well, until the cult of liberalism ressurected him with great PR and an appearance on CNN to defend his points and answer a slew of softball questions about NOTHING political.
Schulz v. Prager
September 19, 2007 - 20:24 ET by tmfSchulz is such a blowhard. He went through exactly the same routine with Dennis Prager a year or so ago. Prager had called him on some insane, over the top comment he had made about Bill Bennett, as I recall. Schulz claimed he would debate Prager any time, any place. Except Prager's producer could never get Schulz' producer to agree to any specifics. So the debate never happened.

No, James, ED is the scam artist. He's a typical liberal bully. It goes like this:
Come on, you want a piece of me? Any time, any place. Just name it. Now? Right now? You mean right now? Right here? Yeah, right, like you're ready for it. You're just mouthing off. You really wanna do this now, here, with everybody watching? You do? Yeah, right. Right, like you really mean it. Sure you do. What a bullsh***er . I don't have time to waste on you; I'm going home.

You all pretty much covered it by claiming his intent is to get on some bigwigs show (Rush, Hannity, etc.) to make a name for himself.
For me, the defining moment of all liberalism was Brian Craig's conversation with James (Ed's douchey producer). When James spouts off with, "Look, I know what you all are about". That says it all - GAME, SET, MATCH!!!! We win!!!

The high price of conservatism...
September 20, 2007 - 00:48 ET by Conservative_in_mass.The amount of supplies required when debating a liberal is really getting out of control. You must be prepared before entering the ring. For example you'll need:
Aspirin: for the headache you get from all the screaming and yelling while "debating" the issues.(ex: Rosie O'Donnell)
Spit masks: For all the flying saliva jettisoned from their oral cavity while screaming about said topic. (ex. Chrissy Matthews)
Reference texts: to point out (to no avail) that history may not be as they understand it. (ex. there was no holocaust)
Extra clothing: For when the verbal word is not enough, your sweaters get deformed from the pulling on your sleeve while uttering "why don't you understand it's all a lie!"
A phone plan with lots of minutes: For repeated calls to talk show hosts who challenge you but will not return a call at all. (ex. article above).
This does not apply to everyone on the left. You can have a healthy debate with a grounded person who is logical in their beliefs.
The above is suggested equipment prior to debating Move on.org types, Michael Moore groupies or Alec Baldwin.

September 20, 2007 - 07:42 ET by Joe SantoraI want to live to see the day when someone challenges Michael Savage to a debate. Why he is virtually ignored by everyone in the media both left and right is just beyond me. September 20, 2007 - 10:27 ET by MikeBInteresting, Joe. I've listened to Michael Savage exactly twice. Both times I thought, "this yoyo needs to get a sense of humor." Michael Savage does for the right what Howard Dean does for the left: if he doesn't drive people to the other camp, at the least he drives them away from his camp. To each his own, I suppose. I listen to Rush whenever I get the chance. I don't agree with everything he says. But what he says, he says with reason and humor. Both times I listened to Savage, it sounded like he was off his meds.

If you've only listened to Savage twice I really believe you haven't given him a chance. I been listening to him for at least 7 or 8 yrs and although he often gets quite vitriolic he makes his points rather soundly. After all, he is extremely well read and educated as am I, and his audience is huge. I would also say that the majority of his callers are well informed . At last count he has close to 19 million people who want him to run for the presidency. Not that he will but numbers like that are significant.
Don't get me wrong, I have a ton of respect for Rush but I truly believe Savage displays more depth to his opinions. Give him another shot.

Joe,
September 20, 2007 - 12:14 ET by Dave RI listen to Michael's show several times a week. As you say, he is extremely well educated along with being highly intelligent (a decided rarity these days).
He is a little out there on occasion, but I think many of his insights are dead-on. He provides a perspective on things you won't find anywhere else.
My only problem with Michael is that he tends to allow his passions to cloud his thinking at times. He is a very emotional guy (not that there is anything wrong with that), and sometimes I think he allows them to sort-of take over.

September 20, 2007 - 08:25 ET by Free ThinkerI've never heard of Ed Schultz but I am not surprised he is cowering from his own challenge. The left's radio talk show hosts can't debate because their ideals get destroyed when scrutinized. If you've ever listened to any of these people their shows have little to do with issues and much to do with their hatred of President Bush. After you laugh for a few minutes it becomes quite boring and does not challenge anyone in the audience to think.

There has to be a problem somewhere though since almost every other conservative talk show host doesn't like the guy. Mark Levin, another highly intelligent host DEFINITELY doesn't like him, and thinks he's a fraud.

ckc1227-About Michael Savage
September 20, 2007 - 21:07 ET by Dave RMichael's show has only been airing in Atlanta for just over a year now. I often do not agree with his positions (but then, I can say that about all the other talk show hosts as well, including Boortz, who I have been listening to for over 20 years), but he raises some very valid points.
Michael considers himself to be an anti-establishment independent conservative. As such, he tends to view Limbaugh, Hannity and Levin, among others, as being a little too beholden to the republicans. I think this has caused a bit of friction between himself and the others.
I think Michael makes a valid point, to a certain extent, as I long ago felt that Rush had, to a certain degree, sold out. I also feel the same way about Sean. Levin I cannot speak for as I have only heard his show 9 or 10 times.
In Michaels defense, he has done far more for the Haditha Marines than all the rest of the conservative talk show hosts combined.
