Apparently Hardball host Chris Matthews has a bit of a problem keeping his lust in check on the air. On Friday evening's Hardball, Matthews was interviewing CNBC's Street Signs anchor, Erin Burnett, about the latest Wall Street news when suddenly he switched gears as you can see in this video. The official transcript isn't up yet on the MSNBC website but here is a transcription of the conversation as best I could understand it:
MATTHEWS: Could you get a little closer to the camera?
BURNETT: What is it? Is it (garbled) in strangely?
MATTHEWS: Come in closer...no...come in...come in further...come in closer...really close.
(Burnett leans towards camera.)
BURNETT: What are you, what are you doing?
MATTHEWS: Haw! Haw! Just kidding! You look great! Anyway, thank... Erin it's great to have...look at that look... You're great...
BURNETT: I don't even know. I'm going to have to go look at the tape here. I'm in a strange location.
MATTHEWS (laughing): No, you're beautiful! I'm just kidding! I'm just kidding! You're a knockout! Anyways thank you, Erin Burnett. It's alright getting bad news from you even. Okay. Thanks for coming on Hardball.
Chris, I know it was Friday night and Erin Burnett is indeed a knockout. However, perhaps you could be a little more subtle about your attraction for Erin. After all, among the few dozen of your Hardball viewers, Mrs. Matthews could have been watching your leering performance.

Harassment?
August 13, 2007 - 00:20 ET by Robert Stacy McCainSexual harassment is a legal term, and I hope we have not become so PC that merely complimenting a co-worker's looks is grounds for a lawsuit.
I don't want to make excuses for Matthews, but it's TV, and it's no secret that TV people are routinely hired and promoted on the basis of looks. Looking good on camera is a job requirement in the TV business. If discriminating against ugly people was illegal, the TV networks would have been sued into bankruptcy years ago.
So Matthews, by calling attention to Burnett's looks, was arguably helping her career -- and why should she sue him for that? (Try Googling "Laurie Dhue." Is anybody seriously suggesting that her looks have hurt her TV career?)
Thank God, I'm in print journalism, where being ugly is not too much of a disadvantage, although it's an established fact -- reported by MSNBC, coincidentally -- that being good-looking is an advantage in any career. Assuming that Mattthews was merely complimenting Burnett, and not hitting on her, talk of "harassment" is misplaced.

August 13, 2007 - 00:54 ET by dahliatraversDisagree. He didn't put it in a letter to her supervisor, he made these comments publicly in a leering fashion. Further, no one in the audience or in managment at MSNBC needs to be told that these women are attractive. They've got eyes.
He may not have intended any harm. As I said elsewhere, this is presumably his clumsy, inappropriate idea of being complimentary. If so, however, he is way off base.
Look, talking about the treatment of women, women's rights, feminism, etc - this is not my thing, in part because I've never seen the need. Further, there is a wide spectrum of comments of this nature which are appropriate and welcome. Matthews' behavior not only falls outside this spectrum (here's one hint, Chris: on air, there is no appropriate way to make such a comment) but has been a pattern.
I was waiting for someone to raise the legal definition of sexual harassment. Correct; Matthews is not her supervisor; the female employee's hypothetical lawsuit would have to be directed solely at the network for permitting such a work atmosphere to be created and perpetuated. However, that wouldn't stop an energetic attorney, if motivated by an irate co-worker and/or co-worker's irate husband, from filing suit against Matthews himself on some related grounds.
If Matthews cannot modify his inappropriate behavior out of some sense of propriety or respect, perhaps he can find motivation to do so from the danger of more pragmatic consequences.

Michelle Malkin's Experience With Matthews
August 12, 2007 - 10:08 ET by CaringwhiteguyA quote from Michelle's website. "As I am seated at the table with Matthews, who I am meeting for the first time, he cracks a joke–and not in a well-meaning way–about how I look. (There are quite a few people who are hung up on this.) “Are you sure you are old enough to be on the show? What are you? 28?” I grit my teeth. He badgers me again with the same question. I politely answer his question and supply my age.
(I wonder how Matthews’ wife, the respected TV journalist Kathleen Matthews, who hosts a show about working women, would react if informed about her husband’s treatment of a fellow female journalist. I’ve been in the business a dozen years and would be happy to talk to Mrs. Matthews about my firsthand experience with Neanderthal chauvinism in the workplace.)"
This is the way Michelle was treated by Matthews during a 2004 appearance on "Hardball". The poor guy can't help himself. A good description would be the he's a "Pattern Pri*k".
Chrissy Boy seems to be suffering from the fact that there's one important part of his anatomy that's not as big as his mouth.

Both of his heroes have a very narrow view of what women are good for. Shouldn't surprise us Chris has got that Howard Stern streak in him.
Erin may be afraid to say something about it. Doubtless it has been brought to the attention of Chris' boss, and we don't see him heading off to Diversity training. We can assume Chris is playing well within the prevailing attitude about women.
-
August 12, 2007 - 20:23 ET by dahliatraversInteresting point about where Matthews may have acquired his attitude about women.
With regard to your last sentence, whatever their views of women, MSNBC ought to get Matthews and the other one to cease and desist forthwith for the protection of own their corporate interests, if not out of respect for their female staffers. One of these women is going to sue for harassment and include the network as a defendant for failing to abate this disrespectful nonsense. And in view of the fact that this has not been one incident but a pattern - on air, recorded, not disputable - they will fully deserve it.
