Chris Matthews: GOP Spent Months Trying To Prevent Blacks, Poor and Young From Voting

I often wonder how MSNBC's Chris Matthews looks at himself in the mirror each morning when he shaves and brushes his teeth.

Seems impossible when he makes comments like he did on Tuesday's Hardball: "[The Republican Party] spent months in every state legislative capital trying to keep black people and poor people from voting, or young people" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Remember the obstructionist Majority Leader, remember his name was Cantor, who fought the President on the debt ceiling. The guy – I think his name was Cantor - who called the Obama administration the imperial presidency. Well he stepped out today to show there are no rough edges in this Republican Party. Let's listen to Cantor today.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CONGRESSMAN ERIC CANTOR (R-VIRGINIA): We'll advance proposals aimed at producing results in areas like education, healthcare, innovation, and job growth. Our solutions will be based on the conservative principles of self-reliance, faith in the individual, trust in family, and accountability in government. Our goal is to ensure that every American has a fair shot to earn success and achieve their dreams.

Sounds like pretty reasonable stuff, right?

You’d think such concepts would be a breath of fresh air to Matthews, especially compared to Cantor calling Obama the imperial presidency.

You’d be wrong.

MATTHEWS: What a cover-up, Feehery. Your party ought to be ashamed of itself. You spent months in every state legislative capital trying to keep black people and poor people from voting or young people. Now you're out pretending, in this Potemkin village you’re constructing, that you care about opportunity in America. It's an absurdity.

No, what's absurd is there's a so-called "news network" in this country that is so over the top in bed with the Democratic Party that even when a Republican espouses ideas that virtually every American could enthusiastically support, said so-called "news network" still trashes him or her.

As such, it's Matthews that ought to be ashamed of himself.

There was a time in the '90s when he was a respected journalist even by those on the right side of the aisle - including me.

Now he's just a part of a propaganda outlet with no morals, ethics, or journalistic integrity.

Once again, how does he look himself in the mirror each morning?
