Donald Trump Sues Bill Maher for $5 Million
As NewsBusters reported in early January, HBO's Bill Maher offered Donald Trump $5 million if he could prove he wasn't spawned by a father that was an orangutan.
On Fox & Friends Monday, Trump announced that he was suing Maher for $5 million for not following through on his offer (video follows with transcript and commentary):
DONALD TRUMP: I have some interesting news today, because you know Bill Maher promised me $5 million - this is unrelated - $5 million. You have breaking news. Big story. But he promised me $5 million for charity if I provided certain information. Well I provided the information. He didn’t pay. So today I sue Bill Maher for $5 million for charity…I’ll sue him about 12:00 today, for $5 million all going to charity. He said, “If you do this,” he made me an offer, I accepted the offer immediately, and he didn’t come through with the $5 million. He made me a $5 million offer on Jay Leno’s show.
So today I’m suing him on behalf of charities. I’m suing him for $5 million. I have no idea how that’s going to turn out to be honest, but I felt I had an obligation to do on behalf of charities.
STEVE DOOCY, CO-HOST: I read that on your Twitter last week or two weeks ago. But you know what his attorney’s going to say? He’s going to say, “Look, he was only joking.”
TRUMP: Well, he may, and let’s see what happens. I don’t think he was joking. He said it with venom. That was venom. That wasn’t a joke. In fact he was nervous when he said it. It was like really, it was a pathetic delivery. But he said, “I will give,” and I said, “I will accept.” So, let’s see what happens. I had an obligation to the charities.
For those a bit confused by all this, Maher while appearing on NBC's Tonight Show offered Trump $5 million if he could prove he wasn't "spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan."
The following day, Trump's attorney sent a letter to Maher that included Trump's birth certificate and demanded that Maher "remit the $5 million to Mr. Trump immediately and he will ensure that the money be donated to the following five charities in equal amounts: Hurricane Sandy Victims, The Police Athletic League, The American Cancer Society, The March of Dimes, and The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute."
As Maher has yet to pay, Trump is now suing.
Wouldn't you love for Maher to be required to make good on this offer?
Maybe it'll teach him not to write checks his body can't cash.
