As NewsBusters reported, MSNBC's Chris Matthews had an on air meltdown following Barack Obama's terrible performance in last Wednesday's debate with Mitt Romney.

On Tuesday, CBS Late Show host David Letterman ended his monologue by showing a video of Matthews' head exploding (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary).

Early in the monologue, Letterman said, "You know Obama's campaign is in trouble when you're looking at Joe Biden to turn things around."

"If I had to give any advice to the candidates at all for the debates, you have to prepare," he continued. "You just can't go out there and wing it."

"And I think in all fairness maybe that's what happened to the president," Letterman opined. "He thought, ‘Look, I'm the president, I know what I'm talking about. I'll just go out there and talk like I'm the president.’"

"Well, normally, you know, if he's speaking to the Rotary Club or the Lions Club, or even here," Letterman added, "that's fine. But when you're in a fight for your office you have to be prepared, and so here now is what the Democrats are doing."

A video was aired with the announcer saying, “Hoping for a better outcome than the presidential debate, Obama is helping Biden prepare for the vice presidential debate by not helping Biden prepare for the vice presidential debate.”

It concluded, “I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message because I believe we're all in this together.”

After the clip, Letterman continued, “The Democrats are still upset with Obama's performance in the first debate. You've got to be cautious, but they now saw something that may help the Democrats deal."

"It won't do any good in the greater sense," he added, "but Democrats who feel let down by the president's performance in the debate, this is for them. The Democratic National Committee put this together for people who felt a little disappointed."

Another video was aired with the announcer saying:

“Hey, pinkos! Feeling depressed by Obama's miserable failure at the first presidential debate? Cheer up by watching MSNBC's debate remix where you can see Mitt Romney going head to head against video of Barack Obama from his 2008 campaign when he wasn't phoning it in. That's tonight after Chris Matthews' head explodes. Only on MSNBC.”

When the video concluded, and the applause died down, Letterman quipped, “I could see that would make everybody feel better.”

Now THAT'S entertainment!
