Kelsey Grammer: Emmys Snubbed Me Because 'I Am a Declared Out-of-the-Closet Republican'

Award-winning actor Kelsey Grammer made quite a statement on NBC's Tonight Show Tuesday.

When host Jay Leno asked how he won a Golden Globe for his performance in the new hit series Boss but didn't even get nominated for an Emmy, Grammer said, "I am a declared out-of-the-closet Republican in Hollywood" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JAY LENO, HOST: Now, explain something to me. You win a Golden Globe for Boss.

KELSEY GRAMMER: Right.

LENO: But you don't even get an Emmy nomination.

GRAMMER: Yeah, it's hard to, hard to figure.

LENO: Why is that do you think?

GRAMMER: I don't know, Jay. I mean, it's a question that will remain one for me throughout the ages.

LENO: Did you ever try to figure that out?

GRAMMER: Well, I mean, this may have to do with several things, honestly. But I think it's possible.

LENO: What?

GRAMMER: I mean, I am a declared out-of-the-closet Republican in Hollywood.

Leno: [Gasps]

[Applause]

GRAMMER: So, do I believe it's possible that some young person, young voting actor or even older voting member for the Emmys would sit there and go, “Oh, yeah, that's a great performance, but oooh I just hate everything he stands for?" I don't believe that's possible.

LENO: You can't think that way. You can't think that way.

GRAMMER: I don't.

LENO: No, you can't.

GRAMMER: I do not.

LENO: You have five Emmys, right.

GRAMMER: No, I don't.

LENO: But, you have five Emmys.

GRAMMER: Yes, I do have five Emmys.

LENO: And how long have you been a Republican?

GRAMMER: Well, about, just after that last one I became one.

LENO: Oh, is that right? [Laughter] Oh, I see. Oh, I see. Is that right?

GRAMMER: No, it's nothing personal. It's obviously I've been overlooked because the work is not up to standards.

LENO: Oh, that is not true. Do you know what I think it is? You're on Starz, and that kind of a, not an obscure network, but you have to search to find it.

GRAMMER: That's not good news, is it?

LENO: No, no. But it is. It's a hard one to find.

Leno was missing an obvious point: it wasn't hard for the folks at the Golden Globes to find Starz.
