George Lopez: 'Mitt Romney Is a F--king Latino and He Won't Admit It'
Comedian George Lopez went on a vulgarity-laden rant during his HBO special Saturday night claiming presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney "ain't going to get" the Latino vote because he's "a f--king Latino and he won't admit it."
Lopez also had numerous f-bombs for Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio (video follows with transcript and commentary, serious vulgarity warning):
GEORGE LOPEZ: Mitt Romney wants the Latino vote. He ain't going to get it. He ain't going to get it. And you know why? Because Mitt Romney is a f--king Latino and he won't admit it. His father was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. Mitt Romney is a Chicano. But he won’t admit it. “I am not. I am Danish. I am French.”
If you want our vote puto, come out of the closet. Get a hair net and lean back and say ole…His father, his grandfather went to Mexico to create a Mormon colony. That don't sit good with Mexicans when you want six wives to get twelve kids. F--king Latinos can have one wife and get twelve kids. Don't f--king cheat.
For the record, "puto" is Spanish for male prostitute. In Mexico it's used for cowards and traitors.
Nice thing to call the presumptive Republican presidential candidate. But I digress:

Of course, nothing but kind words for America's so-called first Latino president. What would you expect?
From there, it was on to Arpaio:

I would think they would be proud of their Spanish heritage. Latin America was fathered, not conquered. Pre-Columbian America was conquered and it became Latin after the Spanish started colonizing and reproducing.
Hispanic... it's like the word Anglo.
Latino was made up because some people found Hispanic offensive because it implied Spanish descent while Latin was more ambiguous and included those of Portuguese and French descent or those who spoke a romance language in Latin America.

First, George was born in California. To the best of my knowledge if he has Mexican citizenship it is only by secondary affiliation. Secondly, Mitt Romney WAS born in Detroit. Mitt's mother was born in Utah, and while his father was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, his citizenship was automatically primarily American. I don't know what Mexican laws say on the subject, but I imagine they are far more strict than the US with respect to a claim of citizenship by birthright to non-Mexican citizens. Most other countries have stricter laws on their books about citizenship coming to children born of foreign parents on their soil, but the US is very liberal about it.
I know the culture of northern Mexico all too well, having relatives who live there and having traveled through the region extensively. Mitt and other Mormons who were in the colony system were NOT considered Latinos, so George is not only WRONG, he's DEAD WRONG. The locals (and the governments of the border states of Mexico and the federal government of Mexico all go out of their way to say they are not Mexicans but Americans. The precise term is Anglo, which can be either explanatory or discriminatory depending on the context. Gringo is more of a nickname for American tourists, and "gavacho" is a direct insult.

My in-laws, who are Hispanic, 3rd generation, cant stand him, and call him a disgrace to his people. If he was really interested in helping his downtrodden people, he would go to Mexico, and other South American countries and help the poor, establish schools and scholarship funds, etc. However it is too easy being a super rich hypocrite, and calling others out for his own failings as a human being!

It's hard to have discussions with the disqus format. It's kind of how I feel about the area I live in, in the 80's a highway making the NJ/NYC commute much faster, leading to an influx of about 200,000 people. It changed the community from rural to suburban/urban.
This is the same thing. People now know about NB and are coming here in droves, without appreciating what made the site great and changing the whole character of the place.

The old-style NB dialogs and bantering might surface occasionally, but I believe they will be the exception rather than the rule.
So far, I think my concern was well-founded.

Seriously, I think you're right, and it's disappointing. I feel as if I've learned a lot from the dialogue on NB, and enjoyed the "verbal" sparring between you and some others on this site. I'm often reminded of old black and white movies that had such witty dialogue.
Sadly, that will all be gone soon as we get the posters from both sides who are more interested in flaming than exchanging ideas and perspectives.

It seems to me that even if the interest is still there, the new system won't lend itself to those types of exchanges--with the possible exception of the Forums.
Maybe I'm being too pessimistic. We'll see once the changeover is completed.
