USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Mocks Ann Romney's MS Therapeutic Riding 'Habit'

By Noel Sheppard | July 01, 2012 | 21:10

You would think after all the negative press MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell got for trashing Ann Romney's multiple sclerosis therapy of riding horses, media members would have wised up.

Apparently not, for on CNN's State of the Union Sunday, USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page referred to Mrs. Romney's remedy as a "very expensive horse riding dressage habit" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

CANDY CROWLEY, ANCHOR: Susan, in our last minute here, I know you had a big interview with Ann Romney recently.

What would surprise the public about Ann Romney?

SUSAN PAGE, USA TODAY WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF: You know, I asked her -- this is going to be in "USA Today" tomorrow -- I asked her if she was going to write a book and she said, yes, she wants to write a book.

And I said, "About the campaign?" She said, no, she wants to write a book about her struggle with multiple sclerosis and with breast cancer and what she's learned about facing challenges of all sorts in doing that. That's really something she says reshaped her sense of self, her priorities. That is what she wants to talk about.

CROWLEY: A lot of talk that Ann Romney is one of his -- one of Mitt Romney's best weapons. Do you agree after that hour interview?

PAGE: I think she comes across as so warm, she is able to kind of warm him up, make him look a little more approachable, but she will also -- she also has this very expensive horse riding dressage habit, which has been a part of her recuperation from MS, but she will be at the Olympics watching her horse perform. I think that's probably a double-edged sword for the Romneys.

Somebody cue MS-sufferer Neil Cavuto of Fox News for it appears another therapeutic dressage basher needs another dressing down.

She is the kind that wants wage earners and taxpayers to pay for abortions for irresponsible women. She wants us to pay for treatment for drug addicts and alcoholics that are too addicted to work for a living. She wants us to pay for 12 million illegals to get a free education, free medical care even though their very presence here is a crime. Reward stupid irresponsible behavior but woe unto those like me that can afford to pay for our own cancer treatment or care for major illnesses with money we have saved from employment all our adult lives.

It's not enough that we can care for ourselves and our families, that is unfair and implies inequality and lack of compassion for others, so we are to be punished for our lives spent working hard, following the rules, living with morality and responsibility as our guide. We must now suffer (contribute) for the worthless dregs of society. However, that does not include the elites, the rich, the powerful in DC. They will all have exemptions and loopholes to avoid the same penalties (contributions) us lowly members of society must endure.

And if we dare complain about coercion (taxes and penalties), lost liberty, violating the constitution, denying americans a voice, then we shall be branded racists, homophobes, ignorant right wing nuts, fear mongers.

I hope I live long enough to see the likes of this idiot and other commie socialists sitting next to me in the doctors office for hours. Then I hope to live long enough to see the likes of Barbara Streisand standing before a health care commission begging for that pacemaker and be told she's too old and no longer has any "potential productivity".

I doubt it.  He's the one who made the decision to "go Disqus."  Probably because he's tired  of tending it daily.

Disqus has no mechanism for links, for italics, for bold font, so many things we take for granted here.

But the loss is way more than that.

What we had here that we won't with Disqus is a community.

How many of us have posted personal comments about illness, deaths, and family members here and recieved support from fellow posters?  Who is going to do that on Disqus?

It will be a sad day for me when the changeover is complete.

Ignorance and contempt on display

Submitted by stunned on Sun, 07/01/2012 - 11:45pm.

According to the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association Inc. (NARHA) in Denver, Colorado, more than 26,000 riders with disabilities benefit from therapeutic horseback riding activities at NARHA centersEquine therapy can provide certain benefits to MS patients.

The experts and MS patients say that equestrian therapy offers much more to MS patients then symptom relief. "It raises their self-esteem and gives them something to do for recreation. They love it and really look forward to it," says Ms. Hurley.

Just getting out in the fresh air and doing something physical can do wonders for MS patients say the experts. "One of the most frustrating aspects of chronic illness or disability is the effect it has on leisure-time activities. Just when a person would benefit most from the relaxation, enjoyment, and socialization that come from recreation, he is limited in what he can do. It is important, however, despite what limitations may exist, to maintain existing or find new interests," write Dr. Robert Shuman and Dr. Janice Schwartz in their book, Understanding Multiple Sclerosis: A Handbook for Families (Charles Scribner's Sons, 1988). "There is a network of horseback riding programs for the physically challenged. Many people with MS find that riding builds back abdominal muscles, strengthens weak legs, and is a terrific source of self-confidence."

Don't tell me this lib didn't research the benefits of horse therapy for the story. She CHOOSES not to share the info on how wide-spread and common the practice is for patients with MS. If Michelle had MS we would be hearing ALL about how wonderful the practice is and how brilliant she was to search out and find a program that has kept her healthy despite her condition. Page is just another hate filled lib.

Dressage wear is "attire".

A riding "habit" is worn typically in the hunter class of the equestrian sports....when they go "hacking" (riding around) either in the flat or over fences. A habit includes a hardhat, while a dressage hat is almost like a man's formal wear hat.

It's as much of a difference as between a business suit and tails (some advanced dressage event riders wear actually wear a tailed coat). Two entirely different things, and not interchangeable.

Your reach on the habit was a FAIL, Jer.

First, you have noticed that I am sick of liberals this past week or so. When anyone disagrees with a liberal, its labels and insults. I have had enough. A commie idiot is over the top, I agree. But when the media espouses an Obama agenda as monumental and evolutionary, unprescedented, its cheerleading with no substance or facts to back up their enthusiasm. Obamacare is going to destroy our financial system, tax everyone including the poor, destroy private insurance, employee coverage, medicaid, and the medical profession. The media does not want to discuss any of those issues nor the humiliating fact that the majority of Americans are opposed to Obamacare. Since when does the majority of Americans count for anything with the media or DC?

The fact is I did comment on ObamaCare both inside and outside your healthcare forums [for which--setting up the forums, that is--I effusively praised you, and did so long after you had switched from my defender to antagonist]. However, the tone of your present remarks should suggest to you one of the reasons I didn't comment more extensively.

everyone that ObamaCare will cut $500 Billion from Medicare over ten years, and will virtually eliminate Medicare Advantage, a program I and 25 million others currently use.

Of course, since Medicare is in such good financial shape, ObamaCare's substantial cuts in Medicare will not have any impact on the quality and quantity of seniors healthcare. Nor will the 30 million or so added to the the healthcare system with no increase in doctors. /sarc

I am not a financial expert but some things I can comprehend. Obamacare is going to force people to pay twice for something they already have. People are going to pay taxes and penalties for something they DO
NT have. Everyone is going to pay taxes two years before anyone will be eligibile for medicaid. By 2014, there will be thousands of these health care commissions that will decide who gets medical care or life saving treatment. Its called "assessment of potential productivity".

Rush was saying today....quoting from an answer Obama gave at a town hall meeting in reference to a 102 yr old woman who needs a pacemaker....His reply..give her a pill..This is the death panels Sarah Palin was so soundly mocked for mentioning even though Obama himself admits its in the bill.

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/07/03/Obama-Administration-...

And the government via IRS, can increase taxes and penalties as they choose even before anyone is "mandated" for coverage...
http://www.foxbusiness.com/government/2012/06/29/scotus-ruling-means-big...

Obama is already granting amnesty to illegals even before the program is written. There are 12-20 million illegals here. Add them to the 30 million that will be forced onto medicaid and the government will have no choice but to up our taxes above what is already in the bill. It appears that by 2016, though my husband and I are both on pensions, we will pay about 50% of our gross income for our insurance, taxes and penalties.Within that period of time, my doctors tell me I will also be needing a pacemaker. What a joy that the quality and length of my life will be determined by some SEIU idiot.

And Jer wonders why I am sick of liberals. And insults to conservatives are off the charts today.
Hey Jer!,,,Read the NB articles posted for today.

Yea Caj Hawaii has that sort of pay the tax first, pilot program

Some low flow frutureramma light rail... BS.. Hay Hawaii tags the # 1 spot...

Obamacare may go away...We shall have the tax hole , blown through the Constitution by scotus....

In the case in Hawaii, we are in a limbo land of a sort. Here in pre-light rail land it's a present tax, even if it's canceled theres still a tax, investments in  studies and such..for pre-light rail ..tax for dream projects that may never happen.... twilight zone. (Ok they did install a column er some such)

O'taxcare, is still pre tax and of course still and forever pre-healthcare. Going to be billing you SOON.

My bet on the next bureaucrats to step up to the tax hole plate , will be the epa, demanding that humans are an invasive species and tax them, pesky human units for per heart beats per day. Relax it's just a tabulator implant, no one will see it, plus you get the gps locator app for free.

Not to mention, the 50 employee cutoff.

Submitted by UpNorth on Wed, 07/04/2012 - 12:47am.

If you own a small business and employ 67 employees, and the cutoff for Otaxacare is 50, as I've heard, what will you do to avoid the onerous costs and penalties? If you're thinking of staying in business, I'm sure you'll do what I'd do, lay off 18 employees to get under the limit. So, this law will be dandy for employment, which will decrease. Then the costs to those who actually pay taxes will, yet again, increase.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

Snobs

Submitted by Jimbo on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 10:06am.

This goes hand in hand with the MSM's claim that Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life".

Get used to this crap. Obama and his MSM handmaidens will spend the next several months painting the entire Romney claim as rich, elitist snobs who are out of touch with the American people. It's their campaign's overarching theme.

If you spent $1 million a day since Jesus was born, you would have not yet spent the entire stimulus package.

Dressage is a habit?

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 1:14pm.

"she also has this very expensive horse riding dressage habit"

When did dressage become a "habit?" These people act as if Mrs. Romney is addicted or something. Riding a horse, for whatever reason, is not a habit. It's an activity, plain and simple. It may be expensive, but so is golf, for that matter. Do you know how much a set of good golf clubs cost? Never mind the yearly costs of membership in any half-way decent golf course. Does Obama have a golfing "habit?" No, of course not. But Mrs. Romney? Well, as her husband is the presumptive Republican candidate, of course it's a habit, an expensive, unnecessary habit that only the super rich can afford (like daily golfing) . Otherwise, why would she spend so much money to indulge it?

This is just another instance of class warfare, one that is selectively applied to only one side of the political divide. The hypocrisy being displayed is appalling.

Here's the difference between Mrs. Romney and Obama. She's indulging her "habit" at her own expense. Obama's indulging his at OUR expense!

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution

Habit?

Submitted by Joe W. on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 1:19pm.

Moochelle has an eating habit. She LOVES that Kobe Beef, lobster tails and the fine wines it takes to wash it all down with. I'll bet Moochelle spends more on lavish vacations and dining out than Ann Romney spends on her "habit".....

Comparison

Submitted by Model850 on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 3:58pm.

I'd like to see a cost comparison:

The cost of one session of Ann Romney's "horse riding dressage habit" vs. the cost (to taxpayers) of one of Obama's golf outings (including the cost of Secret Service, transportation to and from the course, whatever extra security might be needed at the golf course, above normal SS protection, etc.).

And after the analysis is done the simple truth will remain: Ann Romney pays for her "habit" with her own money, Obama (good little socialist he is) pays for his habit with our money.
