WaPo Mag Editor: 'Tough Time to Be a White Man in America Where the Minorities Are Really Taking Over'
Cathy Areu, a contributing editor for the Washington Post Magazine, said Monday, "It’s a tough time to be a white man in America where the minorities are really taking over."
This oddly surfaced on Fox News's O'Reilly Factor during a discussion about New York Times columnist Charles Blow comparing Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich to the kids that bullied a grandmother on a school bus last week (video follows with transcript and commentary):
CATHY AREU: I think it’s a very interesting angle. I write for the Washington Post Magazine, not the New York Times though. I don’t sit next to his desk. I don’t know what he was thinking. But it’s a very interesting angle, and I do think that people have a bullying mentality nowadays.
I think it’s a tough time to be a white man in America where the minorities are really taking over, to be quite honest. You’ve noticed on the show people are willing to vote for an atheist. The Latinos are stepping out. They are, minorities are outnumbering all whites in America.
I'm not sure what this had to do with Blow, Limbaugh, that grandmother, or those kids; neither did substitute host Laura Ingraham.
It was nevertheless an interesting observation about the direction of our country, especially from the daughter of Cuban immigrants that is the founder of Catalina magazine which caters to Hispanic women.
With so much focus on minorities and women in America today - including, of course, white women - Areu was voicing an inconvenient truth for Caucasians in this country that unfortunately possess a Y-chromosome.
More and more this demographic group is indeed treated with minority status by liberals and their media minions also blaming most of the world's problems on its members.
That doesn't validate her point though, for the problem isn't the growth in minorities.
It's instead the superior status they and the female population are given by the media that is making it "a tough time to be a white man in America."
As she's a member of that pompous, condescending media as well as the majority more favorably viewed by it, one wouldn't expect her to count herself as being part of the problem.
Nice of her to recognize it though even if she refused to opine on the cause.

My grandmother was also from Germany, and if you asked her where she was from she had no qualms about telling you the truth, she was from Germany, she wasn't ashamed of it, but that didn't make her any less proud of being American. I have no problem identifying myself as Polish-American, although my last name already does a good job of that, and German-American, I'm proud of my heritage, it's part of who I am and I see no sense in denying it. That doesn't make me any less proud to be American.

yes, I have Venezuelan culture, Spanish culture (my father was born in Spain). But I am NOT a Venezuelan-American. I am an American. My children have a Venezuelan dad and a Mexican born mother, they were born in the USA. I have taught them to solute and respect the USA flag, not the Venezuelan or Mexican flag. They know their heritage and background, but I have made them aware that first and foremost, they are Americans since they were both born in the USA, no hyphenation needed!

If a person wants to identify their heritage (for me Polish and German) along with their nationality (American) it's their choice. I understand that with some people the hyphenation shows they still have more loyalty to their former country than to this one, but that's not applicable to everyone. When I say I'm Polish-American I'm not saying I have some loyalty to Poland, I've never even been there, but I'm very proud of my heritage and have no qualms identifying it. I'm first and foremost an American, but I don't feel the need to completely cut out my heritage from my identity because of that. If other people want to that's their choice and there's nothing wrong with that, but there's no need to disparage those who choose differently.
Also, I'm curious what you mean by Poles with American ancestry? That doesn't really make any sense to me

But I have to ask, how does he know they don't do that? Has he been to Poland? Does he know a lot of people from Poland? And I'd like to point out that any Poles in Poland that have an American family background (which would probably be VERY few, if any), it's most likely that American family had a Polish background, so they already identified themselves as Polish, and they see it as the family simply returned to Poland.

People want something that makes them feel special. I'm half-Japanese/half-Euromutt but I don't like identifying myself as exclusively one or the other. I prefer to acknowledge myself as an American with this particular ethnic heritage. It could also be because my family is Navy and we were stationed in Japan for several years of my life. I know what Japanese culture looks like and, while I have great affection for the Japanese, I understand that that isn't me.
One thing I'd be curious to see if most of your interracial couples are found in the military. We have a presence in several countries and it wasn't uncommon to see military folks marrying someone while overseas.

I remember one of Tavis Smiley's conferences on Black America, a woman was much agreed with when she assessed that it is extremely hard for an accomplished black woman to find a suitable man within her race because those men tend to go after white women.

Read Bebe Moore Campbell's "Brothers & Sisters." Campbell was an award winner for something doled out by the NCAAP. Well....there is a fact. Caucasians are not having enough children to stay a majority anywhere in the world. By 2050 Whites will be a minority in the USA because they refuse to have more than one to two children per family. If this trends continues, Caucasians will be a very small minority in Europe and the USA before the end of this century.

Hmmm...my examples were to prove that merely being a minority and having a large family does not equate to being on welfare. I can list you countless upon countless of large families, who are Hispanic, Black, Muslim and from other government assigned minorities who have never been on welfare.
I can also list countless of White families who are on welfare. I can speak to you about great neighborhoods in Chicago, Boston, etc were White Trash moved in and the neighborhood went down. I can do the same with poorly educated, poor black and hispanic families moving in to a neighborhood and as they say, "there went the neighborhood". Again, it is not a racial thing, it is a socio-economic, education thing.
My point all along has been that it is not a matter of race, as you seem to keep alluding to, but rather a matter of socio-economics and education REGARDLESS of race.

Stop playing the race card. Poverty, crime ridden neighborhoods are not purely a minority problem. I live in Chicago, I have traveled to countless of cities in the USA. Well, I don't know the names of neighborhoods in Michigan, but I have a sister who used to live in in that State, now she moved back to Chicago. I remember going to visit her and helping her out giving food and aid to the very poor in a trailer park neighborhood. The neighborhood was mostly White. Every other day the police was there to make an arrest over drugs, prostitution, illegal gun ownership, husband beating the whole family, mother on meth, etc. Get out of here with your simple minded silliness that only us minorities ruin neighborhoods. Michigan, Mississippi, Alabama as well as other States are full of these trailer trash parks full of White people.
Again, it is about education, family structure, etc., regardless of race.

The huge problem with Social Security, well among many, but one of the biggest ones is that the young, after the greatest generation had huge families, stopped having children. Thus, the young can't support the old.

European and American culture are very selfish, "me first" cultures this is one of the main reasons why Caucasians do not have children because they find it to be a burden on the material things they want.
