Glenn Beck Blasts NYT's Brooks for Mocking His Muslim Prediction After Egypt Was 'Liberated' Last Year

Conservative author Glenn Beck on Sunday took to Twitter to blast New York Times columnist David Brooks for comments he made last year about the talk radio host's predictions concerning Egypt without President Hosni Mubarak.

On PBS's Newshour last February, syndicated columnist Mark Shields mentioned Beck in a discussion about how people attending the CPAC convention viewed the goings-on in Egypt from a domestic political perspective (transcript via LexisNexis):

MARK SHIELDS, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST: Well, I think it is a lack of self-confidence, surefootedness. They didn`t know what they wanted to say. They weren`t sure.

The only one who was really critical that I saw was Rick Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania, who basically took the line that has been developed by both Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. And that was that the -- Barack Obama, by not supporting Hosni Mubarak in his hour of need, was turning his back on a great ally.

And that -- that became the position. But there was nobody there really celebrating the moment of freedom and taking that, picking up that banner. And that -- that -- I think that does belie a lack of confidence, surefootedness, on a terribly important issue.

JIM LEHRER, HOST: Do you agree -- David, do you agree with Mark that what - - what these folks, these 11,000 people want is a candidate -- maybe not the whole Republican Party, but these 11,000, they want somebody who can beat Barack Obama; it isn`t about they have a certain set of issues that they want a candidate...

(CROSSTALK)

DAVID BROOKS, NEW YORK TIMES: Not for these 11,000. These are true believers.

JIM LEHRER: OK.

DAVID BROOKS: These are -- this is not your Republican committee person who owns a car dealership somewhere out in the country.

MARK SHIELDS: Yes.

DAVID BROOKS: These are true believers. And they will -- they are going to have a straw poll. And, traditionally, somebody like Ron Paul will win this thing.

And so they want the hard-core stuff. And so -- and they want -- they want to establish principle. And the other aspect of this group, increasingly true of the party activists as a whole, is they are quite libertarian, not that interested in social conservative issues. And so they will tend to gravitate towards somebody like Paul.

Just on the -- on the Egypt thing...

JIM LEHRER: Yes.

DAVID BROOKS: ... there -- there was an interesting split among the Glenn Beck types, really with delusional ravings about the caliphate coming back, and I would say the conservative establishment, which saw this as a fulfillment of Ronald Reagan`s democracy dream.

And there was that interesting split. And there were really some fights, including between Bill Kristol and Glenn Beck this week...

MARK SHIELDS: That`s right. Yes.

JIM LEHRER: Kristol taking the position that...

DAVID BROOKS: ... saying, this is wonderful. What are you raving about? It is not the taking over of the Muslim fundamentalists.

And Glenn Beck, and you -- for the first real time, you began to see a lot of really serious conservatives taking on Beck and people like that, and saying, you know, your theories are just wacky.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

With the Egyptian election going to Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi Sunday, Beck took to Twitter to dish out some crow:

1/3 Quote of the day from NYT's David Brooks (2011): “For the first real time, you began to see a lot of really serious conservatives…

2/3 Brooks cont’d: “…taking on Beck and people like that, and saying…your theories [about Egypt being...

3/3 Brooks cont’d: …”taken over by Muslim fundamentalists] are just wacky.” David Brooks Apology Tour tickets now on sale? #COWARDS

One quite imagines there will be a lot of media members that warned America to not worry about a Muslim Brotherhood takeover if Mubarak fell having to eat their own crow in the coming days.

Stay tuned.

This was by design, not by accident.

Only problem for Obama in Egypt is, the Egyptian military has stripped the presidency of much of its power.

It will be interesting to see how this ultimately plays out.

Coups are not exactly unheard of over there, so it is possible this thing isn't a total lock for the Muslim Brotherhood just yet.

Yeah, I caught that on Drudge earlier today.

Sad, but not much of a surprise to anyone who understands what Islam actually is.

Personally, I think the only hope for that unfortunate country is this new president runs afoul of the military to the point they take him out.

Normally I am not comfortable with military takeovers, but in this case, if they can keep a radical Islamist group from seizing top power, I'm willing to go along with it.

The Muslim Brotherhood is bad news all the way around.

David Brooks is the moron who said that the 'crisp crease' in Obama's pants meant that he was qualified to rule the world. That's all geniuses like Brooks require to gauge someone's potential for leadership? I'm sure the terrorist thugs who are taking over Egypt have crisp creases in their pants, too. Is that why Brooks slobbers over them so?

Muslim fundamentalists who voted for Mohamed Morsi elected who they wanted; the opposition has to live with the results.

Much like the election here in the United States wherein liberal Democrats and uninformed mooks put an incompetent purple-lipped grifter in the Oval Office.

The only possible "good' to have come out of that massive meltdown of common sense, is that those responsible for moving the White House from the District of Columbia to the middle of Malfunction Junction, are stuck with going along for the rest of the ride.

Will we support our ally? If we do, we're "living with it," and a war. If we don't, we'll die with it.

I remember way back when, the USA would decide what despotic leader would best suit OUR national interests, and we would support him, or replace him when the time came.

Why anyone would think that any of these idiotic countries would embrace "democracy" having NEVER had anything but dictators to tell them what the hell to do, is beyond me.

Much like the politicians they cover, these people NEVER take responsibility. If the subject is brought up then they will change the subject, or insist on more context, or try to refer to some incidental procedural point to claim they were right. Or you have the Paul Krugman approach, which is that when proven wrong you immediately shout "I Was Right"! as loudly as possible.

Those bad Muslim Brotherhood hoods

Submitted by lrgon on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 11:03pm.

They oust a government place themselves into power; communize the government even more than before and the GOP "leadership" and their partners in crime the Dems want to give the Brotherhood Army tanks. That was back in July '11. But my guess is that the GOP is not about to terminate foreign aid to the Muslim countries anytime soon.

So you go ahead and rail against the media all you want the GOP is getting off scot free giving away money and tanks to the Muslims in the hood.

As to your question about Obeyme being a trusted ally of Israel, that's never been in doubt, he's not.  Let's just hope that the Americans will figure that out before it's too late, but I fear that it is too late anyway.

Any of this.
Including that the Muslim Brotherhood PROMISED not to run a candidate for President in new elections so that the opposition could get US dollars for support and assistance. It seems that they lied through their smiling teeth. What a shocker!

Beck is looking more and more prophetic. A new Islamic Caliphate would not be possible without Egypt as a core part of it. I wonder what will happen when Assad is toppled and removed from power? Will we see a democratically elected Islamic government in Syria too? I would not be surprised at all.
