George Will Schools Hilary Rosen on Voter ID Laws

By Noel Sheppard | June 24, 2012 | 12:40

CNN political contributor Hilary Rosen got a much-needed education about voter ID laws from George Will on ABC's This Week Sunday.

When Rosen echoed the dishonest Democrat talking point that voter ID laws are considered "under the civil rights statutes" to be voter suppression, Will smartly replied, "Let the record show that the Supreme Court, with Justice John Paul Stevens, liberal Justice writing it, said that there is no Constitutional flaw in photo ID voter laws" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

GEORGE WILL: Mr. Holder himself has made himself obnoxious to Republicans by saying unlike the Supreme Court that photo ID laws constitute voter suppression. That is if you have to present when you have a photo ID, the way you have to present a photo ID to get into justice, Attorney General Holder’s justice department.

HILARY ROSEN, CNN POLITICAL CONTRIBUTOR: Now we’re getting to the real issue. This is why Republicans don't like Eric Holder because he has challenged voter ID laws under the civil rights statutes as voter suppression rules that they are. Because he has challenged the Arizona, you know, discriminatory immigration law. Because he has refused to implement the discriminatory anti-marriage law. So, you know, Eric Holder has shown a lot of backbone in the justice department and the Republicans hate it. So, what do they do? They call for his resignation. They throw him with document requests that are impossible to respond to. They just throw more and more stuff at him to distract him from doing the things that actually the president and the people hired him to do.

WILL: Let the record show that the Supreme Court, with Justice John Paul Stevens, liberal Justice writing it, said that there is no Constitutional flaw in photo ID voter laws.

ROSEN: You know, they’re going to have to review them in the courts. Thirteen states, George, have instituted new statutes since the Republicans took over those state legislatures in 2010 purely for the purpose of limiting voting.

WILL: To legal voters.

Indeed. The purpose is to limit voting "to legal voters," a concept liberal media members such as Rosen are offended by because it prevents Democrats from committing voter fraud.

As for Justice Stevens and the Supreme Court's ruling on this matter, Will of course was 100 percent correct.

The New York Times reported on April 29, 2008:

The Supreme Court upheld Indiana’s voter identification law on Monday, concluding in a splintered decision that the challengers failed to prove that the law’s photo ID requirement placed an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote.

The 6-to-3 ruling kept the door open to future lawsuits that provided more evidence. But this theoretical possibility was small comfort to the dissenters or to critics of voter ID laws, who predicted that a more likely outcome than successful lawsuits would be the spread of measures that would keep some legitimate would-be voters from the polls. [...]

In what the court described as the “lead opinion,” which was written by Justice John Paul Stevens and joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, the court acknowledged that the record of the case contained “no evidence” of the type of voter fraud the law was ostensibly devised to detect and deter, the effort by a voter to cast a ballot in another person’s name.

But Justice Stevens said that neither was there “any concrete evidence of the burden imposed on voters who now lack photo identification.” The “risk of voter fraud” was “real,” he said, and there was “no question about the legitimacy or importance of the state’s interest in counting only the votes of eligible voters.”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

That liberal media members such as Rosen continue to misrepresent this matter is disgraceful.

Thankfully, there was a conservative on the panel present to set the record straight for if that weren't the case, her totally false assertions would have gone completely unchallenged.

Bravo, George! Bravo!

Perhaps they DO pass a script around. There's way too much word-for-word repetitiveness from the lefties. A talking point is one thing, but this is too much. Just another case in point of the liberals throwing everything they can think of against the wall, hoping something will stick. And whatever does (or whatever they THINK does) they will run with until it's beat to death and beyond.

In some places, besides requiring ID to cash a check, the person must also provide at least a thumb print on the back of the endorsed check. I know this to be a fact, because I had to do that.

This woman really is as dumb as she looks. I have never heard such crap in all my life. Maybe Republicans don't like Holder because he is incompetent , there's a concept. I thought Rosen was shammed off TV after her "mother's dont work or have a job" fiasco. ABC must be desperate to fill the panel seat.

i know it would take forever ,but once and for all it would show voter fraud for what it really entails, not just a couple mistakes,as claimed by the democrats, but a conserted effort at fraud by the democrat party.

Nice To See That The Left Is Still Using Discredited Talkers

It says a lot about the Left offering up a discredited talker to do their talking points. Even the flock must have nagging doubts in the back of their minds about what she is saying after she screwed up her Ann Romney comments.

Leave it to the Left to heap more incompetence on top of incompetence.

To more fully comprehend the Left, one must read “Leftism As Psychopathy” by John Ray, M.A., Ph.D. Caution, it might scare you a little bit.

Since the ruling

Submitted by IndianaCarl on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 2:45pm.

Just as a note - since the Supreme Court ruling the our voter ID law is constitutional, the only place in the state that the sky has fallen in is in northwest Indiana. Rest of the state is operating fine.

You see, the whole thing that's also mis-represented is that at no time are you prevented from casting a ballot - you simply cast a provisional ballot and then you follow the procedure to make your ballot count.

http://www.in.gov/sos/elections/files/2012_Indiana_Voter_Information_Gui...
http://www.in.gov/sos/elections/2651.htm

I live in a county that has been used as a test site for open voting sites, even. You do NOT have to go to your regular voting site - you may go anywhere in the county to vote. They set up advance voting booths in some of the grocery stores up to two weeks in advance of the election. All you have to do is present your valid state issued ID, the clerk pulls it up on the computer, issues you a ballot, you go vote, and you're done.

No muss, no fuss, and very little chance of voter fraud since, oh yeah, at each polling place we're required to have both a Republican AND a Democrat there at all times to verify the information.

Lest we forget which party was committing voter fraud in Indiana - http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/04/02/4-indiana-dems-charged-with-e... .

Side note - at least Mitch Daniels will be President in 2012... even if it is of Purdue.

God Bless the U.S.A. and the troops that defend her and her Constitution.

Oh-that ole racist and voter suppression advocate - Jimmy Carter

Submitted by Gary Hall on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 3:23pm.

A Clearer Picture on Voter ID  --  By JIMMY CARTER and JAMES A. BAKER III, February 3, 2008

[..]

In 2005, we led a bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform and concluded that both parties’ concerns were legitimate — a free and fair election requires both ballot security and full access to voting. We offered a proposal to bridge the partisan divide by suggesting a uniform voter photo ID, based on the federal Real ID Act of 2005, to be phased in over five years. To help with the transition, states would provide free voter photo ID cards for eligible citizens; mobile units would be sent out to provide the IDs and register voters. (Of the 21 members of the commission, only three dissented on the requirement for an ID.)

[..]

Fortunately, the Supreme Court has taken on a case involving a challenge to Indiana’s voter ID law. The court, which heard arguments last month and is expected to render a judgment this term, has the power finally to bring clarity to this crucial issue.

And indeed they did bring clarity to this crucial issue, as Noel laid out above.

How in the world can the entire national media continue to bring their shallow personal agenda to muddle this discussion, rather than reporting on 1.) the clarity which now exists, and 2.) the fact that about 80% of the citizens of the country support a national photo voter ID law?

Remember - the Pew Center polled nationally in 2010 asking if voters supported Obama's immigration agenda, which included amnesty, and found that only 25% of the nation supported that agenda. They are pushing a radical minority agenda folks - why is this so difficult to shut them down?

Of course, that is a rhetorical question, as the answer is  - the MSM.

Submitted by ohio granny on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 5:07pm.

Can't cash a check, get medical care, get on an airplane, get into a government building, apply for social security, food stamps, wic or other government programs without an id.

There is one reason and only one reason the democrats fight voter id and that is SO THEY CAN STEAL ELECTIONS. They are fooling no one but themselves by crying racist. They ARE treating blacks as if they are dumb. Why are blacks not outraged?????????????????

Voting Fraud

Submitted by bkeyser on Sun, 06/24/2012 - 7:27pm.

Democrats say it's not systemic, widespread, nor having any effect on actual elections. Fine. Lets take them at their word.

But, it certainly could happen so why not make sure it doesn't? States should propose a small fee to be collected at tax time from everyone earning $1m or more that would explicitly fund an annual voter picture ID drive. They could advertise in print, radio and television ahead of the drive (to be held at least one month before their State primary), provide transportation for the indigent, and fund the photo ID through their respective Motor Vehicle Administrations.

Funded by the rich, administered by the State; would liberals continue to object? It would theoretically be a dream program, right?

Libs like to leave out the salient point "...to legal voters" when the facts are against them (which is per usual).

The demon-rats oppose the suppression of the ILLEGAL vote. We can only conclude from this that they fear losing some major elections if they can't cheat as easily as they did, for example, when they stole a senate seat for Al Frankenfraud.

The far left propaganda media

Submitted by John21 on Mon, 06/25/2012 - 8:46am.

The far left propaganda media and the "Kool-Aid" party have to change the talking points and provide distractions for the Obama administration.

The total incompetence of this administration does not allow honest debate on the last 3 years so the public relations media has to manufacture these kind of non-arguments and convince people that they are important.

Failure to do so will cause people to think about the poor economy, high unemployment, lack of basic legal requirements for most of the administrations actions. Which means the elitist of the propaganda media will be exposed for their lies and disservice to the American people for the last 3 years.
They can not survive such exposure, their cedibilitty is already at the lowest point in history, their product is no longer really wanted because of their bias. Many media conglomerates will find the next few years hard and embarrassing if they cannot keep an incompetent administration in office untill the can find someone that is capable of leadership, hopefully before the country falls too far.
