Brit Hume on Holder Contempt Vote: People Will Say 'They Wouldn’t Do This to Him if He Were White'

Fox News's Brit Hume on Monday said leaders of Congress "might want to think twice" about voting in favor of contempt charges against Eric Holder, "the first African-American Attorney General."

Appearing on The O'Reilly Factor, Hume added, "Everybody will be saying, ‘He wouldn’t do this, they wouldn’t do this to him if he were white.’ You know that’s coming."

As the discussion moved to the pending vote regarding Holder being in contempt, host Bill O’Reilly said, “In order to be held in contempt though, he has to be held by both the House and the Senate.’

“No, no. No, no,” interjected Hume. “Just one house can hold you in contempt, and it’s considered contempt of Congress. That’s not enforceable in any meaningful way. I mean, you’re not going to have the, you know, the Sergeant at Arms isn’t going to go down to the Justice Department and bang on the door, try to take him away in manacles. I mean, it’s not really enforceable, but it’s an ugly thing to have happen to you if you’re the Attorney General of the United States.”

“On the other hand,” Hume continued, “if you’re a leader of Congress, and you’re about to, you know, take this kind of action against the first African-American Attorney General, you might want to think twice about that, too, because you know what’s going to come out. Everybody will be saying, ‘He wouldn’t do this, they wouldn’t do this to him if he were white.’ You know that’s coming.”

I completely disagree--they should vote to hold him in contempt.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 8:53pm.

We are a nation of laws and Eric Holder is supposed to be the chief law enforcement officer of the United States. It is a duty he carries constitutionally (throught the provision for executive departments) and US law establishing the Department of Justice.

If he has shirked his duties and failed to provide either house of Congress with documents they properly need for oversight according to THEIR constitutional duties, then he has broken his oath and must be held accountable.

I don't give a damn if the vote appears to be racist. If they don't vote, it will be condoning potentially criminal behavior. If they do vote, they might alienate a few voters. The only voters who would consider the vote racist are ones who Romney will not win anyways.

Brit is way off base on this one.

Then there was Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell

who was forced to resign. His "whiteness" didn't help him.Neither did it aid Mitchell's boss Richard Nixon. Nixon was frightened into resigning with just the threat of an impeachment in connection to his conspiratorial cover up of the Watergate incident.

I recommend you block out most of the day sometime for a review of the Nixon tapes. It will blow your freakin' mind. The guy operated a crime factory way beyond anything in this nation's presidential history--before or since.

I don't think Brit's meaning was that Holder...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 10:25pm.

shouldn't be held in contempt...I saw this segment tonight and I don't think what he said was a prediction of what will likely happen if the House votes to hold him in contempt. It's apparent to me based on other comments of Brit's about Holder, that he has little use for him and the way he has run the DOJ. And, the racism card has already been used against critics of Holder's. He's come under fire several times since he's been AG, and just about every time, at least one talking head on the left has mentioned racism as a reason for the criticism against him, so if the House does vote to charge him with contempt and the race card is thrown, which it surely will be, it won't be the first time.

I agree with your take on Brit. I've heard him speak on Holder, and he is no fan. I think he was just pointing out what the MSM may do with this. No real surprise. ^_^

That in order to PROVE that you are not racist, you have to give black people way more leeway than anyone else would get.

We can't hold the first black Attorney General to the same high standards that past Attorneys General have been held. He must be held to a lower standard and allowed to make mistakes that would not be tolerated otherwise. That is how you show that you are not racist.

This was written about a (fictional) ugly red-headed poet, but I thought of this when I read this article:

"He put the old cant of the lawlessness of art and the art of lawlessnes with a certain impudent freshness which gave at least a momentary pleasure. He was helped in some degree by the arresting oddity of his appeance, which he worked, as the phrase goes, for all it was worth."
