Washington Post Publishes 5,500 Word Front Page Sports Story on 'Obama's Basketball Love Affair'

By Noel Sheppard | June 10, 2012 | 09:51

Noel Sheppard's picture

Exactly one month ago, the Washington Post published a 5,400 word front page hit piece on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's high school years which included a now infamous hair-cutting incident.

On Sunday, the Post devoted 5,500 words, beginning on the front page of the sports section, to an excerpt of David Maraniss's new book with the headline "President Obama’s Love for Basketball Can be Traced Back to His High School Team":

To say that President Obama loves basketball understates the role of the sport in his life. He has been devoted to the game for 40 years now, ever since the father he did not know and never saw again gave him his first ball during a brief Christmastime visit. Basketball is central to his self identity. It is global yet American-born, much like him. It is where he found a place of comfort, a family, a mode of expression, a connection from his past to his future. With foundation roots in the Kansas of his white forebears, basketball was also the city game, helping him find his way toward blackness, his introduction to an African American culture that was distant to him when he was young yet his by birthright .

Here's the front page of the sports section:

That article at the very top is the one in question with a picture of Obama with his high school basketball team.

This is what the editors of the Post's sports section thought was the most important story from Saturday, a day which included: Maria Sharapova winning the French Open and completing her lifetime Grand Slam; Union Rags winning the Belmont Stakes; the Miami Heat beating the Boston Celtics in game seven of the Eastern Conference NBA finals, and; the New Jersey Devils beating the Los Angeles Kings in game six of the NHL finals.

Nope. More important was President Obama's high school basketball days in Hawaii four decades ago.

It's not like Post readers hadn't heard about the current White House resident's teen years before. It published a 10,000 word piece about the junior senator from Illinois' past in August 2008.

Of course, you can't put 5,500 words on one page, so the post devoted all of pages D6 and D7 to the President's basketball past:

The headline at the top of page D6 read, "At Punahou, his first taste of winning, adoration."

Tough to get free advertising like that, isn't it?

As for the President's pot smoking in high school that Maraniss covered in some length in his book, that was actually relegated to the second to last sentence in the very last paragraph at the very end of this 5,500 word love letter (emphasis added):

Virtually none of this part of Obama’s basketball history was recorded in Dreams From My Father. Nor should that have been expected. Most anecdotes in his memoir flowed through the thematic stream of race. So the reader learned of a few jolting moments of awareness and understandable anger, such as when a JV coach flippantly used the word “niggers” to describe black players in a pickup game, and then lamely tried to differentiate them from people like Obama. The result was powerful storytelling. But what he left out unwittingly made it easier for political critics decades later to portray him as a stranger in their midst, whose life was outside the American mainstream -- a purposefully negative construct derived from distorted history. If there is a representative teenager’s life, Barry Obama lived a version of it in Hawaii in the late 1970s. Several things stood out -- he went to a prestigious school, he lived with his grandparents, his father was gone, his mother was infrequently present, he was a hapa black in a place where most people were a lighter shade of brown-- and those traits helped shape his particular character, but they did not make his life odd or mysterious. He smoked pot with his Choom Gang and goofed around outside the classroom, where he came across as smart and mature if not notably studious, but the central activity of his high school life was basketball. With equally strong roots in the Kansas of his ancestors and the playgrounds of black America, basketball connected the disconnected parts of him -- and he was good enough to play with “the best bunch of guys” on the best team in Hawaii, one of the best teams in the nation.

As NewsBusters reported back in August 2008, this was similar to how Obama's pot smoking was handled back then.

The author of that piece was - surprise, surprise! - David Maraniss.

Sick-making, isn't it?

It should go without saying that everyone at the Washington Post ought to be ashamed of this obvious campaigning for Barack Obama, and should seriously wonder if they're currently working for a newspaper or the committee to reelect the President.

That was my take. I don't care about Obama and actually do not enjoy the sport of basketball. The article was destined to be completely boring for me, but the picture is poorly photoshopped for whatever purpose. Assuming this is a real picture of his basketball team, I wouldn't think it would be necessary to highlight Obama in any way. He does stand out a little in it anyway.

I'd bet he has to play better golf than he does B-ball. But then, the cameras aren't allowed to follow him through a round.
Where are the stories from his former team mates, the ones where he won the game, sealing the state championship, where he got a triple-triple-double? The game where he scored 112 points, eking out a win over a much taller, almost NBA quality team?

Edit: I take it back, just saw Shankopotamus, his golf game is worse than previously reported.

Submitted by cristo on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 11:17am.

This is not a favorable portrait. It's a humiliation. It basically says Obama's got the "white man's disease." He can't jump (look at the photos, he can't get six inches off the ground) That he was number 8, or 9, or ten on a 10-man squad. He only made the varsity squad in his senior year because the coach had to cut senior players (kinda like his election to the Illinois State House) It shows that Barry was a pot-smoking wannabe, who couldn't jump or score but "showed a keen court sense," whatever the hell that is. That in the championship game in his senior year, he was put in because the score was something like 38-3. The team won 60 -28, with Barry scoring 2 points. This will not go over well in the Oval office.

If this was so important, maybe even more important than spending his last two high school years and much of college in "a drug-induced haze" according to his own autobiography, why didn't the President write it about himself? Looks to me like a fabrication based upon a picture by a sycophantic author.

For someone who is, supposedly, "devoted" to the game of Basketball, he sure spends a lot of time, effort, and money, trying to be a politician. One would think that he'd become a coach, or a pro or semi-pro player, and not an observer. Sinking a few for the camera doesn't count. He's more devoted to golf than basket ball.

Obama's worth several millions dollars. The least he could do is pay for a brand-new B-Ball court in Chicago, for the "disadvantaged youth," don't you know. That's what a "devoted" guy would do.

From the article: "He had to leave the island to find himself as a black man, eventually rooting in Chicago, the antipode of remote Honolulu, deep in the fold of the mainland, and there setting out on the path that led toward politics."

So, Obama was born a rich white child living in Honolulu, and it wasn't until he attended college in Illinois that he realized that he was a black man? Wow! Who knew? I would think that the six years he lived in Kenya would have gave him a clue.

But if you think Obama or ANY President doesn't care about his resume`--his legacy--and how history will judge him 10, 50, a 100 years after he's out of office, then somebody must be loading up your brownies with Maui Wowie.

Aloha...

I'm tellin' ya,

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 3:15am.

I'm tellin' ya, Jer..............if Boy Baraka CAN do what he WANTS to do to this country............his resume will be lookin' good down the line, because he WILL HAVE 'fundamentally transformed' this nation into his own idea of what it SHOULD be, as compared to what it WAS, or IS!!!

But even if he is ('hopefully') ousted, he's allready written his own resume, with his ficticious and shallow 'autobiographies', which nobody bothered to read prior to the last election. And he has managed to push through a very large part of his agenda - mainly due to the stupidity of the American people, his fawning lemmings in the Democrat party, the self-emasculating eunichs of the Republican party, the willing accomplices in the StateRunMedia, and his evil, treacherous, and insidious power brokers who tell him what to do. And, like I said, he doesn't have to worry about anything - win or lose - at this point, unless somebody with some real balls decides to convict him on treason, sedition, and unConstitutional charges - which wouldn't be very hard to do, given his record.............but I'm not holdin' my breath for that to happen.

I don't eat brownies, and if I knew that they were laced with pot, I'd avoid them even more!!! And believe me, Jer, I"ve tried just about every drug known to man, so I'm no innocent bystander.................I just happen to have enough common sense and a strong enough constitution and willpower to know that none of them are worth getting serious about.

Now.............I think I can mix one more black cherry/vodka before sleepytime-time.

The fact that there's actually a book with that title out there, by a man named Limbaugh, no less, has me chuckling....

And what about the Pacquiao -

Submitted by lotr on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 9:38pm.

And what about the Pacquiao - Bradley fight? Granted, it was very late east coast time, but you would think that the pre-fight hype would've superseded this banal propaganda.

Come January

Submitted by ohio granny on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 10:06pm.

Come January Obama will have plenty of time to play basketball. He might know how to play basketball but he sure hasn't been very good at playing president. He has actually been pretty lousy at playing president.
