CNN's Candy Crowley: 'Usually You Kind of Give the President a Pass on Leaking Confidential Stuff'

By Noel Sheppard | June 10, 2012 | 11:36

CNN's Candy Crowley said something Sunday guaranteed to raise eyebrows on both sides of the political aisle.

Near the end of her program State of the Union, and well after a somewhat contentious interview with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) that dealt with amongst other things the recent national security leaks controversy, Crowley stated, "Usually you kind of give the President a pass on leaking confidential stuff” (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

As the segment began, Crowley brought up her previous interview with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), and how the rhetoric between him and President Obama has been a bit “nuclear” lately.

CNN’s Dana Bash replied, “Everything you were discussing with him with regard to the leaks investigation, yes, there is bipartisan outrage about it, about all of these leaks, but he is the one driving the idea that it is political, that it is to help the President, that it is from the White House”

“By the way,” added Crowley, “he wouldn’t say, ‘No, I don’t think the President would do that. I don’t think the President would purposely.’ I mean, I gave him a chance and he said, ‘I don’t, I don’t really know what the President knows and doesn’t know,’ which I thought was kind of. Usually you kind of give the President a pass on leaking confidential stuff.”

"Usually you kind of give the President a pass on leaking confidential stuff.”

Do you remember George W. Bush getting "a pass" in the previous decade for the "outing" of former CIA operative Valerie Plame?

Or was he hounded for years by the Left and their media minions over an issue far less serious than the current one?

It certainly is fascinating how differently leaks are handled by the press depending on what Party controls the White House.

Usually you give Scooter Libby a pass when you already know his boss, Dick Cheney, was not the leaker of Valerie Plame's status in the CIA.

Usually, urinalists such as Candy Crowley voice their outrage that Richard Armitage isn't canned for his loose lips.

Usually, Candy Crowley mails in her talking points with her usual partisan slant.

Not unusual.

Sure, everyone knows that when the Founders were considering the penalties for treason, they never had Presidents or public and military leaders in mind. Candy, you are that monumentally stupid.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 12:14pm.

The President CANNOT give himself or anyone else a pass for leaking extremely sensitive material because it openly betrays our allies and emboldens our enemies. It is a betrayal of trust from the very top.

If you cannot wrap your stupid, fat head around the concept that trust is essential in operations at that level, perhaps you need to do something more suited to your low intelligence like being Vice President or Minority Leader in the House.

Hate to nit-pick Dr. Sam, but…

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 2:29pm.

While I fully agree with you on Candy’s problem with brain-power or situational awareness – And fully agree that the release of sensitive information is a betrayal of trust… she is not altogether wrong on this subject - just mostly wrong..

The plain fact is that the President is the ultimate authority on what constitutes classified information. Theoretically, if the President reveals such info, then it is presumed that the President (acting as the supreme “Originating Authority”) has thoughtfully weighed the consequences of releasing that information and has determined the release of such information will not do harm to the United States.

Until now, we (for the most part) have had Presidents who took their responsibilities seriously.

That is right.

Submitted by The Vet on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 2:52pm.

The President has the authority to DECLASSIFY previously classified material AFTER it has been reviewed and deemed releasing it is no longer a threat to the United States or her allies. See the document dump of material after WWII decades and decades later.

That is not happening in this case. Information is being sneaked out the door with no review as to whether it is in the best interests of the United States to do so.

Notice for instance another reference source of government documents:

As some of you are aware, I recently finished  a massive research project, and as part of the project I found it necessary to look at the Foreign Relations of the United States.  It is, for the uninitiated, a massive, multivolume encyclopedic series that encapsulates all of the papers pertaining to foreign relations and foreign policy.  For instance, here you can see what ambassadors were writing to the Secretary of State, or vice versa, or numerous other memoranda, notes, and cables between foreign relations players in the U.S. government, as well as foreign officials (when necessary).

Last I checked the documents found therein are declassified - up to 1976.  It will be quite some time yet before we start seeing items from the rest of the 1970s declassified, much less items from the 1980s.

foreign affairs and managing our treaty obligations to our allies. In that respect, the president's authority is bound by whatever the treaty may say, because those obligations are binding and secondary only to the constitution in terms of their legal hierarchy.

The President may be able to divulge secrets, but it hardly behooves our foreign relations with our allies when they feel they can't trust us. I take the position that just because he can, does not mean he should.

There are all sorts of things that may technically be legal, but are morally and ethically abhorrent to those with any modicum of decency. That precludes Barry O.

I agree with both of you. “El Supremo” has betrayed both our allies and ourselves with his reckless abandonment of responsibilities and duties… No question about it.

The point I’m trying to make is that, REGRETFULLY, he is the guy in charge of the day-to-day operations of the government – including classified info reviews, declassifications, and procedures... So he can’t be touched if indeed he was the one who took it upon himself to declassify (on a whim) such information.

But I have no doubt that a “scapegoat” will soon be found to take the blame for his complete lack of character.

But what is really frustrating is that the Congress has taken no action to remove (or even seriously rebuke) him for his willful abuse of power… Hell, they continue to stall even about issuing a Contempt of Congress citation against Holder.

Our only option is to take this latest scandal and rub it in his face… and that’s all we can do.

I completely agree he might have some of the law on his side, but some of it isn't. At some point, I remember a discussion in which some attorneys and judges were doing a panel discussion and they noted that there are some secrets that presidents can withhold from their successors. Was rather interesting.

Every time Oblamer brings up Valerie Plame, we can just as easily bring up either him or his staff leaking the Seal Team 6 incident. I hope Romney's team has the wherewithal to use the issue in the campaign.

It is my belief that when it comes to spelling-out the definitions of, and the responsibility to protect classified info it should be the job of Congress to codify those factors into law and not just leave it up to “Executive Orders.”

Having held a TS clearence while in the military

Submitted by cristo on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 2:00pm.

The consequences of releasing classified information is drummed into the head of every sailor, soldier and Marine lucky enough to work within the signals intelligence community. The release of classified information, depending on its nature, could lead to loss of clearance or if serious enough, prison. There are probably a number of old SIGINT (in my day, the acronym SIGINT itself was classified Top Secret codeword, and I get the creepy crawlies just typing it) fools in prison right now for sharing classified information. It's serious business among those who count and they generally have the power and the means to put someone who has leaked sensitive information behind bars.

"Top Secret" shall be applied to information, the unauthorized disclosure of which reasonably could be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security.

Operative words here are: grave damage

2. No, those were NOT powdered eggs. I don't care if they were green and had doughy lumps in them! The hens were...uh...raised by Irish farmers in...ummm...Idaho. The lumps were potatoes fed to the hens.
3. No, those were NOT dehydrated potatoes! I swear they weren't...and if you can't believe a Navy cook, who can you believe?
4. Yes, we actually did trade stuff like coffee grounds, 3-gallon containers of ice cream, #10 cans of mixed nuts, and packages of steaks to the engine room snipes, the carrier air wings (for flight jackets, etc.) the supply storeroom guys (who could give us electric fans for our bunks, hand tools, foul weather jackets, etc.) (I assume the Statute of Limitations has expired...I hope.)
5. Yes, Navy cooks had to pass an intelligence test to be selected for cook. "Okay, sailor, look here...this is an egg, and this is a carrot, got it? Now, turn around and count to ten...good...now turn back around...no, no, not in a circle, back this way, where I am...okay...now which one of these is an egg? Alright! You did great! Congratulations, you are now a cook!"

For you ex-sailors out there, I hope this enlightens you. If you have any further questions, just mail them to me at Inmate #687-39-23, Federal Prison, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. But I was framed! I swear! I didn't do it!

But now, as for Ms. Crowley, I don't know if she is stupid, ignorant, or senile (she's been around since god was a messcook.) All I want to know is...what if your son or daughter was killed because of your leak?

Signed: The old Master Chief

Regarding "green eggs"

Submitted by Delsa on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 4:30pm.

I was a flight attendant for 23 years and can attest to the FACT that REAL EGGS can and do turn green.
It happens if they are left in a warmer for too long.
In fact, once on a flight from Palm Beach to Washington,D.C., I served Averell Harriman "green" scrambled eggs.
My only saving grace was that he had a custom of reading two news papers, sometimes three, at a time.
He never saw the eggs, he just ate them.
And yes, I knew who he was even in his later years.

I have seen food do weird things. BTW, I forgot one Navy secret:

That leftover chicken gravy can be turned into beef gravy the next day by adding black coffee. I can tell you the name of the third-class cook that showed me that in 1964...I was brand new (passed my intelligence test with flying colors) and almost puked when I saw him do it...lol. It did NOT taste like beef gravy.

You should have had a cajun in the KP. They would have told you the easiest way to preserve and reuse left over gravy was just to add roux.....yum

Serving Averell Harriman

Submitted by Delsa on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 9:40pm.

Yep, I sure did. National Airlines.
I have no idea how old he was. Used to fly between Palm Beach and DC
Over 23 years I met some interesting folks but he was the only one I ever served green scrambled eggs.
I remember laughing when repeating the story to my dad and thanking God Harriman was buried in newspapers.

Green eggs, and ham

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 2:11pm.

You're not the only one who has seen military issued eggs turn green. I saw it happen every time we were in the field and we had a "hot" breakfast (talk about a misnomer!), delivered in those nifty, water heated, 1940's era aluminum containers. It was the aluminum which turned them green. It reacted with the sulfur in the eggs and caused oxidation. Not very appetizing to look at, but I didn't notice any difference in the taste. That all stopped when they switched to stainless steel.

Gotta Wonder...

Submitted by dimar on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 2:20pm.

Well Ms. Crowley, do you really believe that the Pakistani doctor who has been tortured and is now in prison thinks we should "give the President a pass on leaking confidential stuff"? Are you really so ignorant that you think it's ok to put people's lives in danger? People like the Seals who put their lives on the line for example? It is disgusting to think that ANYONE should be given a pass for leaking confidential information that poses a threat to our Country, our military and those who assist us.

The liberal media and liberal

Submitted by Slyrr on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 4:23pm.

The liberal media and liberal democrats went screaming yellow bazonkers over that 'Valerie Plame' thing. They frothed, fumed, screamed and raged - every day for years, and are STILL bringing it up every so often. They tried to get Bush impeached over it, they wanted Karl Rove 'frog marched' out the White House straight to prison. The liberals and leftists howled non-stop for blood, and they even sent Scooter Libby to prison on a process charge that was totally unrelated to the Plame thing, simply out of spite and because they wanted SOMEONE to be punished, anyone they could get their claws on.

And the Plame thing wasn't even a 'leak' because everyone KNEW. Plame and Joe Wilson were bragging to major magazines and newspapers about their covert doings, letting their pictures get taken, practically posting it all on facebook for the world to see, as if daring someone to call it a 'leak'.

Now Obama's regime has ACTUAL leaks of military/spy secrets that are threatening lives and endangering national security for millions. Obama and his thugs are just letting NYT reporters waltz right into top secret meetings and waltz right out to publish top secret info, winking and nudging to Al Queda, Iran and every other terrorist, and practically begging them to take advantage of it to kill American troops and citizens.

And the same media, who thought the Plame 'leak' was the end of the world, now think leaks are no big deal.

What a lying pack of rats they all are. There was once a time when being a journalist was a noble, honest profession. Now they're nothing but a den of crooks, thieves and traitors - lying to protect this failed president from the consequences of his crimes.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Submitted by rbosque on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 8:31pm.

I worked in intelligence for many years, and let me say, this stupid woman Crowley knows absolutely NOTHING about security yet she thinks she has a right to bloviate about this. If anyone had purposefully leaked information, they would be sitting in a federal prison. Obama PURPOSEFULLY leaked this info and should be in prison ESPECIALLY since he is the "Commandrer-inChief".
