George Will Schools Krugman on Gov. Walker: $3 Billion Deficit 'He Inherited' Has 'Become a Surplus'

By Noel Sheppard | June 03, 2012 | 16:16

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman got another much-needed education from syndicated columnist George Will on ABC's This Week Sunday.

After Krugman impugned Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisc.) for his so-called "fiscal irresponsibility," Will simply and quite accurately responded, "A more than $3 billion budget that he inherited, a deficit, has now become a surplus" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, HOST: We have a couple minutes left before we have to take a break, and I just quickly want to go to you, George Will, because you're calling this recall election in Wisconsin, coming up on Tuesday, Governor Scott Walker, the Republican, facing a recall, the second most important election this year.

GEORGE WILL: Yes, because it's a microcosm of what the country faces, an attempt to change the trajectory of the public sector. You have this extraordinary conflict there where unions are defending their privileged position. And it does look as though Wisconsin people are going to try and take that back.

The man running against Scott Walker, Mayor Barrett of Milwaukee, has used the Walker reforms to save $19 million in the Milwaukee budget itself, so he's running against a man whose reforms he's emulating and using.

PAUL KRUGMAN, NEW YORK TIMES: And yet, of course, Walker is proposing tax cuts that will do much more to hurt the budget than any of these alleged savings. So this is -- it is a microcosm. It is -- it's not -- it's not fiscal responsibility versus irresponsibility. It is a vision of what kind of country you want to have and whether we're going to redistribute income upwards.

WILL: A more than $3 billion budget that he inherited, a deficit, has now become a surplus.

That about says it, doesn't it?

Perhaps you should have read the article you linked to.

Submitted by AFVet on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 12:42pm.

If you read the article you will notice that the current budget is balanced and this budget has a surplus. Surpluses over time can be used to payoff past debt, which undoubtedly will be used to pay off the sins of the leftists who were running up the state's debt.

Here is an example, the Federal Government could balance it's budget but still have a huge amount of debt, just as we had in the late 1990's when the Republicans balanced the budget and started paying down the debt with our surplus, this was before the Clinton/Gore recession of 2000 and 9/11.

Will was 100% correct and Krugman as he normally does just shows how dumb he truly is.

Krugman's R-word

Submitted by CO2Maker on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 5:06pm.

Didja notice Krugman trotted out the the left's most famous R-word, "redistribution" and added the hated "upward."

Puh-leeze spare me. Class warfare on the march. That's all the Democrats have ever had. Income disparity is class warfare. Racial disparity in politics, once you remove the veneer of racial grudges, just another way of milking class warfare.

The New Testament says, "The poor you will always have with you." Ditto the rich. There will always be a bottom quintile *and* there will also always be a top quintile. And in this country, the bottom half pays no household income taxes, while the top *centile* pays 40% of the taxes.

"The poor you will always have with you."

Submitted by DontFeedTheTrolls on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 5:49pm.

You are right about the distribution of wealth.
If Uncle Obama (Sam) gave every single adult American a check for $1,000,000 tomorrow and said "That's it! No more food stamps, welfare, housing aid, student loans, etc. No more handouts, you are free to earn more or spend it all." and you waited a year then looked at the results, about 30% of the people would be broke, 30% would be wealthier, and about 30% would be pretty much in the same state as when they got their check.

Americans keeping their own earnings is a Civil Right! Demand your Civil Rights!

Redistribute upwards?

Submitted by brianbonner on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 6:06pm.

How can you redistribute wealth UPWARDS? Is someone taking the product of poor/middle class labor and giving it to rich people? No, this in particular is about letting taxpayers KEEP more of the product of their labors. How can anyone buy into this nonsense?

Anyone who WANTS to be in a Union in this country, in this time, obviously does not want their pay to be based on the merit of their labor. Civil Servant, public service, unions keep lazy unqualified people on the job and steal/waste the money of the tax payers.

We need more Gov. Walkers in this country; badly.

My favorite Will "teaching moment"

Submitted by Texndoc on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 5:23pm.

The panel was discussing the female votes, working women, unemployed women, single mothers, etc and the Obama spokeswoman went on and on about Planned Parenthood to which Will asked "Excuse me, since when did "female" become synonymous with "Planned Parenthood"?"

How funny when two undercover videos came out this week with Planned Parenthood gladly promising abortions if the babies in the womb weren't boys.

Krugman is just a sad little novelty act at this point. Sorry, but Paul Krugman did not receive a much-needed education.

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 10:56pm.

Two critical components of any education are the ability and willingness of the recipient to absorb and comprehend what is conveyed. Hence, Krugman did not receive from Will the much-needed education as the critical components were not present.

I submit as proof the many attempts by Will and others to educate Krugman. The result is Krugman's same old banal and vacuous rhetoric.

Keynesian Thought: Epic FAIL

Submitted by ChrisNH on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 10:08pm.

Krugman famously rationalizes that the 'stimulus' would have properly 'stimulated' had it been bigger. But we know that all that money simply went to public-sector union hacks, not the bigger and more important private sector. It went to fund a bunch of Lib pet projects, and did NOT stimulate the overall economy upward or send the unemployment rate downward. And making the stimulus 'bigger' would simply have meant more pet projects and more money into the hands of union hacks, who would then funnel the money back into the Dem machine via union dues.

In the end, not every worker is a 'fireman, policeman, or school teacher.' To hear Libs pontificate, you'd think those are the ONLY kind of 'workers' that exist. Those 27,000 HP people who will be getting fired? Not a word of worry from Libs. But touch even ONE school teacher, then it's a catastrophe.

Happily, people see that public-sector union hacks are 'privileged.' They see womb-to-the-tomb entitlements, gold-plated health-care, the ability to retire at a young age, and pensions paid for. Is there 'class warfare?' Absolutely! People despise these union hacks, and we'll see just how much they do on Tuesday.

There should be an "Honest" Award given...

Submitted by Indie Dude on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 10:23pm.

We need an honest award! An award where it doesn't just honor liberals. Obviously, Krugman, and other left wing "journalist" are honored for one reason only, The Democrat's agenda. To influence the masses that Democrats are the only Intellectuals to be valued with worthiness.

As time goes by, and as technology broadens, you and I can see for ourselves, the awards, which they were honored with, doe not match their performance in real life experiences, or practical terms.

In other words, what the hell were these people on the voting committees thinking of?

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 8:39am.

Krugman is an academic elitist, and they never admit that they got it wrong. He is an intelligent individual, but he is an idealogue, so rational analysys is supplanted by Leftist dogma. Even now, Krugman insists the the only failure of the stimulus is that it was big enough.

Over the past few years, I've begun to believe that Krugman actually wants to see American capitalism fail so it can be replaced by a social system deisgned and run by the likes of him.
