Chris Matthews: 'Can the President Make Mitt Romney Scary?'

By Noel Sheppard | June 03, 2012 | 13:49

Noel Sheppard's picture

Chris Matthews must be really getting concerned that the man that gives him a thrill up his leg is in serious jeopardy of losing in November.

On this weekend's syndicated Chris Matthews Show, the host asked his panel of perilously liberal journalists, "Can the president make Mitt Romney scary?" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Can he make, with all we know about his allies like Donald Trump and all those connections of the past and cultural conservatism, can the president make Mitt Romney scary?

That's some question for a so-called journalist to ask.

Are we at the stage where all pretense of impartiality has been dropped and the media are now just flat going to campaign for their guy without even trying to appear neutral?

Apparently so.

And wouldn't it have been nice if Matthews were as concerned in 2008 about Barack Obama's "allies" and "connections of the past" such as the America-hating Rev. Jeremiah Wright, convicted real estate developer Tony Rezko, and domestic terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn?

That would have been too much like journalism for the likes of Chris Matthews.

Let's hear what his colleagues had to say:

ANDREW SULLIVAN, DAILY BEAST/NEWSWEEK: I think he can make the policies scary. I don't think the person. And I think, again, this is why a slight nuance here. I do think Obama should aggressively attack the policy proposals, but not attack the person. I think that’s the key thing because Obama…

MATTHEWS: Katty can he do that, can he make him scary?

KATTY KAY, BBC: I think he could make the vision of what America might be under President Romney seem scary to Hispanics and women, and that would help him a lot in certain sects.

SULLIVAN: Especially because Republicans control the Congress.

And what has Obama done for Hispanics and women since taking office? That never seems to be an issue with these folks:

MATTHEWS: Andrea?

ANDREA MITCHELL, NBC: I do think that Mitt Romney is concerned about being portrayed scarily because that’s why they came out this past week with a new video showing, and it was talking about his wife and her illness and the really touching effectively, you know, emotional parts of him.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Why shouldn't Romney be "concerned about being portrayed scarily?" The media have been doing that for over a year. Shouldn't he defend himself by presenting evidence to the contrary?

Apparently not:

JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE NATIONAL AFFAIRS EDITOR: In the middle of the electorate, people are, if you look at under the independent swing voters in swing states, they think that they are to the right of Barack Obama. They think they are closer to Mitt Romney than are ideologically to Barack Obama, but they think their furthest away from Republican trickledown, the Republican social issues, all of that stuff. So if you can make Mitt Romney own the Republican brand…

MATTHEWS: You think they can do that? Make him a scary right-winger on culture, economics and everything?

KAY: Look at what he did to himself during the primaries.

HEILEMANN: You look at the positions he took during the primaries, they're going to try to freeze him like a bug in amber.

MATTHEWS: I guess they think he can do it.

I guess they do - especially with the help of "journalists" like these.

Are they in the tank?

Submitted by CO2Maker on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 2:04pm.

No, not at all.

They're in that big, see-through aquarium on the starship Enterprise when Kirk and Crew went back to 20th century S.F., built an jumbo fish bowl, and transported a whale back to the 25th century.

Chris the Big Mouth Mamba: "Can we distort our description of Romney enough to make him scary?" And Andrew Sullivan pricked up his ears in anticipation, as did the others on CBMM's gauche chorus. They're not even trying to hide it in the least.

And everybody made pee-pee in their pants when Rush said "I hope he fails."

It's called double-standard...

Submitted by JeremySmithColl on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 5:33pm.

Obama's camp has not address the Bill Maher contribution... they never will... Rush is a big mouth, but Bill is a hypocritical, sad little man with delusion of grandeur and the political perspective of a sand-fly. Mathews can say that and then turn around and say the media is not liberally-biased... there's a deficit of critical thinking and logical reasoning among eligible voters because 4 year degree colleges and universities are a breeding ground for liberal views and extreme left ideas... We, sir... are doomed as a nation.

Now they all know Romney is not scary but they are asking if obama's campaign can fool enough people into thinking so in order to win the election.

Wow! what a great recomendation they have for their guy. Lie, cheat and steal because the he won't get enough votes otherwise.

his first real campaign

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 3:02pm.

2012 will be obama's first real campaign because finally he is running against himself, his record.

In Illinois his path was cleared by compliant judges who released embarrassing court documents against his opponents and he was promoted by a helpful media. Plus obama pretty much avoided establishing an ideological identity (by voting present or not voting as a state legislator) which allowed him to run for President on whatever political position benefited him politically. The candidate obama of 2008 was a Conservative who was going to cut the deficit in half, spur the economy, and he stated emphatically absolutely no tax increase of any kind for average Americans. Not one dime more in taxes!

But now he can no longer hide. He's played his hand and he has to take the consequences.

David Gregory in Cleveland...

Submitted by JeremySmithColl on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 5:36pm.

A few weeks ago, and while being interviewed by Russ Mitchell (formerly of CBS and another Obama worshiper) Gregory said... "You know, I think voters are looking back at 2008 and thinking we can't lose the historic significance of that election and that works in favor of Obama..." Translation: People will vote for him because he's black... first black president deserves a second term because, after all, he's black... that's what it boils down to... and people are being stupid enough to allow this to happen...

THE number one issue for Hispanics is not amnesty. They want jobs. If Romney speaks to Hispanics about jobs he will have their interest.

I think this reveals that this roundtable of syncophant morons KNOW that nobody is watching them and their influence and the Peoples faith in their 'objectivity' has faded dramatically. Otherwise they wouldn't worry about what the Obama campaign can do to portray Mitt negatively, they would gladly take up that duty, and they do, but if noone's watching...propaganda doesn't work.

MAthews and his gang, and all the other networks know this... it's about ratings, ratings bring in ad revenue, ad revenue brings in job-security no matter how distorted and wrong.... ratings talk, b.s. walks...

I didn't know if "tingle up his puss" Chris Matthews meant make people afraid of Romney "scary", or Michelle Obama "my baby daddy" type of "scary". If it were the latter it would mean Mitt Romney was afraid, for all of you people who don't know Ebonics.

Obama 2012 is desperate

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 2:18pm.

"Making Romney scary" is all they have left.

Even Robert "Black Cloud" Shrum conceded today on one of the Sunday morning programs that if Obama runs on his record, he loses, so he has to pose as the better alternative to Romney.

If the GOP Super PACs are smart, they will wait until late August or early September, and release a bunch of ads focused on the failed "green investments and who benefited from them; the truth about GM and the $20 billion we'll never get back; the incompetence and cover-up of Fast & Furious; etc., and let the voters decide who's scarier.

Scaring up Romney

Submitted by CO2Maker on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 2:20pm.

So, Chris wants to make Romney scary, and that's okay. But the left bleats and wails and moans and screams racism when Fox or Breitbart or conservatives in general try to show that Alinsky is scary, Fox-Pivens is frightening, Ayers is dangerous, Wright and Pfleger and Jones are trouble, and Revs. Tawana Sharpyton and Hymietown Jackson are incendiary.

Fair and balanced, it ain't.

And, fwiw, Matthews is the worst pundit for cutting off guests in mid-syllable. It's like he's channeling Phil Donahue who asked an audience member a question and before the question was even finished, Phil was stepping away from her with his arm stretched out holding the microphone in the general vicinity of her mouth.

What a question

Submitted by Conservator on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 2:50pm.

If Matthews and the putrid progressive propaganda pushers (Andrew Sullivan, Andrea Mitchell, John Heilemann and Katty Kay) are at the point they need to make Romney look scary, then desperation doesn't go far enough to explain their pain. The polls are all trending far better for Mitt than Barack and they know it.

If they're acting like this now, what will they be saying in the Summer and Fall? Lastly, I would raise a counterpoint to Heilemann's comment  on "Republican trickledown." We are nearly 4 years into OBAMA's GOVERNMENT TRICKLEDOWN - how's that working John?

And that idiot liberal Dan Blather...

Submitted by Nforce on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 3:08pm.

...was on the Jon Stewart show earlier this week lying through his teeth stating that the main stream media is not liberally biased. It amazes me how these people can be so completely blatantly biased - unabashed - and yet have the chutzpah to make the accusation that they aren't biased left. So that leads me to one of two conclusions: either these people are completely delusional and living in their own vacuum of reality, or they truly believe that they are the real centrists and anyone who does not think like them is a radical and not worth catering to with regards to objective reporting.

I haven't noticed that Romney

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 3:33pm.

I haven't noticed that Romney is particulary 'scary', and in fact I have noticed him saying some things, more and more, that I can relate too - so I hope that he keeps it up and is sincere about it. Of course, the members of this wimpy-assed panel would definitly think that I'm 'scary'!!!! And I'd be proud to accept that.

But I've thought that Boy Baraka is 'scary' from the get-go - and I'm NOT talking about him personally, because he's just another girlie-man queebie. But where he is coming from, and what goes on in his drug-addled, communist brain-washed mind, and his ability to make progress with this 'scary' ageda - with fawning help from stupid and vacant voters, Pied-Piper politicians, and the outright complilcit help from the StateRun Media - is what is REALLY frightening to me, and millions like me. And as it becomes more and more apparant that this phony poser POS is being seen for what he really is - the biggest scam ever perpetrated upon this nation in it's history - he and his handlers will get more and more blatent, reckless, conniving, and aggresive in doing whatever they HAVE to do to keep him in office, because this may be their last best chance to 'fundamentally change this nation' in the way that they have wanted to for many years!!!

And Kitty Kat, or whatever this dimwits name is.......................shut your stupid BBC mouth, because you don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about.
