Soledad O'Brien Defends Obama's Jobs Record: 'Jobs Have Been Moving Overseas for Decades'

By Noel Sheppard | June 01, 2012 | 12:36

With the release of another horrid jobs report Friday, the Obama-loving media are already out in force trying to spin the numbers so they don't hurt the reelection prospects of the current White House resident.

On CNN's Starting Point Friday, known Obama lover Soledad O'Brien defended the President's jobs record by telling Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-Tx.), "This is not in the last three years suddenly jobs started picking up from S&P 500 companies moving overseas. It has been twenty plus years of jobs moving overseas because of better opportunities certainly overseas" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

SOLEDAD O’BRIEN, ANCHOR: Christine was breaking down government jobs for us and then private sector jobs, and she said 13,000 jobs in government lost, 82,000 private sector jobs gained. So how much of this is a problem really of these S&P 500 companies that have moved overseas? Because when you look at their numbers of job growth, they’re actually do much better than we’re doing here in the United States and for those companies overseas.

CONGRESSMAN JEB HENSARLING (R-TEXAS): Well the question would be why is anybody wanting to move jobs overseas? And that is because the President's policies have failed and are helping send capital and sending jobs overseas. I mean, the bigger story is just to have a tread the water economy you need 150,000 jobs to keep pace with new entrants, and we received less than half of that, and the trend line’s been in the wrong direction. And as you probably know, the real story is even worse because if you look at the labor force participation rate that this monthly unemployment number is based upon, we have had millions just give up and leave the labor force.

O’BRIEN: Right, Christine was just mentioning that a moment ago, but when you talk about why are jobs moving overseas and you say because this president, well really, jobs have been moving overseas for decades now. Right? I mean, this is not in the last three years suddenly jobs started picking up from S&P 500 companies moving overseas. It has been twenty plus years of jobs moving overseas because of better opportunities certainly overseas.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Now in fairness, she's right. In particular, manufacturing jobs peaked in this country at 19,553,000 in June 1979.

Does that make it all Jimmy Carter's fault?

The reality is that companies have indeed been moving jobs overseas for many decades, and virtually every presidential candidate since has promised to do something about it. This includes George W. Bush as well as a certain junior senator from Illinois.

The difference is that when Bush was in office, he was severely attacked by media members for the continued departure of American jobs to other countries. Folks like O'Brien didn't defend him saying that this had been a multi-decade trend.

But now that the labor markets are clearly stalling thereby threatening Obama's reelection, O'Brien feels the need to add some historical reference to the problem in order to defend the man she voted for and continues to support regardless of his record.

She's some fine journalist, isn't she?

As a woman, and a former member of the media (radio) I am embarrassed to have her in the sisterhood.

CNN is going to ride this

CNN is going to ride this thing all the way to bankruptcy...lowest ratings in 20 years and they can't figure it out...

Agreed. CNN may have the lowest ratings in 20 years, but

Submitted by Rush Fan on Fri, 06/01/2012 - 4:16pm.

it is a badge of honor for them to support Obama and the Democrats through thick and thin. Moreover, their brothers and sisters in the Leftist media are very proud of them for their stance in the face of disastrous ratings.

Their ratings may be in the tank, but every member of CNN's team will still be invited and welcome at their equally liberal friends' cocktail parties and dinners. When it comes down to it, isn't the social interaction among friends more important than ratings or fair and balanced news?

But it's not Obama's fault!

Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 06/01/2012 - 1:11pm.

Jobs have been moving over-seas, and have done so for decades, but the current lob loss isn't Obama's fault! I mean, really, he only negotiated several trade agreements, which imports manufactured, and farmed, goods and exports skilled labor, with several countries, correct? How can he be to blame? It's all Bush's fault! Right? Right?

So, Soledad? Obama just signed three free trade agreements. If you think the problem is jobs moving overseas then its fair to say Obama is part of the problem.

Well, if Soledad wants to play that game, then why does the President point to the crisis in Europe as his scapegoat for why our economy does bad?

Ok, and your point is.... ???

Submitted by Wheldon Rumproast on Sat, 06/02/2012 - 4:37pm.

Fact is, the jobs departure began under Reagan. THAT was the point where it should have been stopped, and was not. Continued under Bush I. Dems did nothing either, under Clinton, then BushII, who instead of doing something to end a trickle, that had become a deluge, gave corporations incentives...to outsource. Not fixed under Obama either, fact is to fix it now will be so painful to anyone who tries, now that corporations have become used to the fat profits from using slave labor, that it's unlikely anyone can reverse the trend.

Fact is, once upon a time, Reagan did approve policies to protect American companies against predatory pricing practices by foreign corporations. It's too bad that our government has not stepped up to protect American workers from being screwed by the very companies they worked to build in the 1st place.

"It's too bad that our government has not stepped up to protect American workers from being screwed by the very companies they worked to build in the 1st place."

Those American workers voted for politicians, of both parties, that allowed over regulation and over taxation.Put the blame where the blame belongs.

Detroit auto industry lost the American car buyer when union labor became too expensive and the foreign auto makers moved in.
And those unions pushed very hard for more regulations and taxes on the corporations without regard for the job security of their members.

oledad O'Brien Defends Obama's Jobs Record

Submitted by yo_dook@yahoo.com on Sat, 06/02/2012 - 9:13pm.

None of these so-called media outlets are champions for facts or free speech nor are they in favor of any sort of open discourse or discussion. If you don't conform to the narrow line of questioning (and guests are always 'advised' before telecasts what they are permitted to talk about) you will be silenced mid interview, while on the air. MSNBC and CNN and Fox do this routinely. The bias in the media of all stripes is extreme- and the right of the free press...and the right to free speech (an essential ingredient to democracy) is noticeably absent. Soledad O'Brien is not a journalist, merely a news reader and part-time sensationalist. So is Rachel Maddow. Are they the problem or is it the institutions they serve? After all, they are all under contract and highly compensated and have to please the masters they serve. They're just the face of the numerous institutional and structural problems in media, government and civil society.

We don't want anyone to have a fair shake: just sit down and shut up. We don't want to listen, because caring about what other people have to say might involve actually empathizing with a point of view that's not our own. It's all about "drive thru" answers- fast and quick "we're out of time, sorry". Really? What's missing are real conversations, respecting others points of view and last but not least finding common ground or respectfully disagreeing. Without that, we're an attack society, all out to "get each other", in love with other people's failure. Then facts aren't important anymore- it's becomes a dirty business of defamation, distorting the truth, flat out lying no matter the moral cost or hazard. And that stinks like yesterday's diapers.
