Heilemann: Obama's a 'Brass-Knuckled, Pipe-Hitting' 'Brawler' Who'll 'Do What Is Necessary to Stay in Power'

By Noel Sheppard | May 29, 2012 | 00:45

Noel Sheppard's picture

In 2008, Barack Obama with obedient media members such as New York magazine's John Heilemann convinced America that if they put their hope behind a junior senator from Illinois, their lives would instantly change for the better.

Now that things didn't turn out as rosy as these folks claimed they would, the White House needs to scare the public into thinking things would be far worse if Mitt Romney is elected, and Heilemann obediently published a piece Sunday explaining how the team he favors plans to do it (serious vulgarity warning):

Though the Obamans certainly hit John McCain hard four years ago—running more negative ads than any campaign in history—what they intend to do to Romney is more savage. They will pummel him for being a vulture-vampire capitalist at Bain Capital. They will pound him for being a miserable failure as the governor of Massachusetts. They will mash him for being a water-carrier for Paul Ryan’s Social Darwinist fiscal program. They will maul him for being a combination of Jerry Falwell, Joe Arpaio, and John Galt on a range of issues that strike deep chords with the Obama coalition. “We’re gonna say, ‘Let’s be clear what he would do as president,’ ” Plouffe explains. “Potentially abortion will be criminalized. Women will be denied contraceptive services. He’s far right on immigration. He supports efforts to amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage.”

You have to appreciate Heilemann's honesty, for not many of Obama's supporters in the media are willing to admit the former junior senator from Illinois in 2008 ran "more negative ads than any campaign in history."

Maybe if the press were honest about that then, it would have been more difficult for Obama to sell his Hope and Change nonsense.

But that's history now. Folks like Heilemann can't concern themselves with how they bamboozled the public into voting for a totally unqualified presidential candidate four years ago.

The task presently at hand is convincing folks that this new iteration of Obama is good for them, and the monster from Massachusetts via Michigan is the devil incarnate:

The Obama effort at disqualifying Romney will go beyond painting him as excessively conservative, however. It will aim to cast him as an avatar of revanchism. “He’s the fifties, he is retro, he is backward, and we are forward—that’s the basic construct,” says a top Obama strategist. “If you’re a woman, you’re Hispanic, you’re young, or you’ve gotten left out, you look at Romney and say, ‘This fucking guy is gonna take us back to the way it always was, and guess what? I’ve never been part of that.’ ”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

As the headline read, "Hope: The Sequel - For Obama & Co., this time around it’s all about fear." And they ain't kidding:

Thus, to a very real degree, 2008’s candidate of hope stands poised to become 2012’s candidate of fear...For anyone still starry-eyed about Obama, the months ahead will provide a bracing revelation about what he truly is: not a savior, not a saint, not a man above the fray, but a brass-knuckled, pipe-hitting, red-in-tooth-and-claw brawler determined to do what is necessary to stay in power—in other words, a politician.

That bears repeating: "not a savior, not a saint, not a man above the fray, but a brass-knuckled, pipe-hitting, red-in-tooth-and-claw brawler determined to do what is necessary to stay in power."

But didn't people like Heilemann tell us in 2008 Obama was a savior, a saint, and above the fray?

Exactly how can he and his colleagues merrily embrace the truth today when they were part of the lie then?

Even worse, how can they sell the public now what they convinced them was bad four years ago?

Politicians were a disease then, hazardous to your health and your wallet. So what you need today is "a brass-knuckled, pipe-hitting, red-in-tooth-and-claw brawler determined to do what is necessary to stay in power."

Never mind what we told you four years ago.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

And this is what we can expect in the coming months: Obama's not what we told you four years ago, but he's what we need now.

Don't concern yourself with our lies. They were for your own good.

Now we're telling you the truth. Heck, we're even willing to acknowledge we lied then so you'll believe us now.

It's an interesting tactic when you think about it, especially as it's one the media outspokenly claim is prevalent on Wall Street.

For over four years, the press have beaten Americans almost to a pulp with stories about how brokers and bankers are all lying crooks not to be trusted. We heard this recently concerning the Facebook IPO debacle.

So what makes the scam the media pulled on the country in 2008 any different, and why are those so distrusting of Wall Street today willing to believe what's being disseminated by news outlets that so blatantly hoodwinked them in the previous presidential election?

Makes you wonder if the overwhelming majority of those ensnared by the housing bubble were liberals, and that these are the folks all industries including the media prey upon to fool over and over again.

MB,

Anyone else who tried to reduce (what should be) a solemn day reserved to honor truly brave men and women to being all about himself would be treated with the contempt he deserved. But not Obama. The media will interpret what he says into being the most eloquent and beautiful words ever spoken by an American president. Who's more shameless - Obama or the media?

The man has had an ego that is immeasurably huge his whole life. He has lied and sweet-talked his way through it all. Can you imagine what must go through this man's head that millions of people think him a messiah-esque leader? Having already believed himself to be the greatest man on the planet he thinks EVERYONE HAS TO AND WILL believe everything he says because not to is to be either evil or brain-damaged.

Like nearly every point liberals make concerning ANYTHING, Obama's self-image is one-hundred-eighty degrees from reality.

For what it's worth, I offer my highest recommendation to run out and buy "The Amateur." It is a window into the creepy life of this creepy man known as our president. Your reaction will no doubt be - "WOW!! How could we elect THIS guy!" The title was taken from a comment Bill Clinton made about Obama.

Its not paranoia if they're really out to get you...

Anyone who could talk about a "new kind of politics" while running the most negative campaign in history won't have any problems running a smashmouth campaign this time.

I guess he's no longer comfortable with the idea of being a one-term president.

And he's got to do something. Let's face it: Reelect me; I promise I'll do better this time is no campaign slogan.

Keith Moon was 'sumpin else',

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 05/29/2012 - 12:39pm.

Keith Moon was 'sumpin else', that's for sure!!! I think his drumming and his personality were intertwined, and he was perfect for the Who. I think he was in a 'surf band' before he told Peter Townsend that he was a better drummer than the one they were using in the 'High Numbers' - isn't that what they were called??? A 'surf band' in London??? And since I have played bass before, I'd have to say that John Enthwistle was quite a monster himself - except that he was surrounded by 3 guys who were a helluva lot more animated than he was.

I read an interview with Townsend once, and he was talking about how some technical machine was timing the speed of Moon's drumming, and it couldn't keep up!!! It's interesting how different drummers have different styles, and how they fit into the bands they were in. I've seen John Bonham, and he was a monster. I always thought that Ginger Baker was kind of 'plodding' - although the guy can play his ass off - it's just a different style. I saw Mitch Mitchell a few times, and the guy was basically a jazz-drummer with a light touch, but he fit in perfectly with Jimi. I'll probably get roasted for this next statement, but I always thought Ringo Starr was an excellent drummer, because of his ability to fit in perfectly with whatever kind of material the band was playing.

As always, MA, it's everyone else's fault.

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 05/29/2012 - 7:40am.

The 2004 version of Barack Obama, who captured the nation with a dazzling speech about unity and went on to win the presidency on a message of hope, died on Monday. He was 8 years old.

The cause of death appeared to be a bitter realization that he needed to win reelection in an increasingly partisan political environment, a cancer that he had been battling for months if not years.

So Obama had no choice but to fight dirty too.

[  ]

"Even as we speak," he said, [in 2008] "there are those who are preparing to divide us -- the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers, who embrace the politics of anything goes."

On May 21, 2012, more than three years after he was sworn into office, Obama confessed at a press conference in his hometown, Chicago, that he had become one of those peddlers.

That day, his campaign had published a video attacking Romney for his role at his firm, Bain Capital, ......

"This is what this campaign is going to be about."

RIP, Obama the Lightbringer.

Oh, he's still a messiah, but too many people  are just not recognizing him as such.

You know, as scripture says (paraphrasing) the light came into the world, and the world knew him not.

Or the fact that, as Michelle says, he brought us "out of the dark into the light."  --Nothing like co-opting the description of the true Messiah.

Do you really think he doesn't consider himself in those terms any more?

We're just too dumb to appreciate him!

Romney's offense?

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 05/29/2012 - 11:16am.

This may be so but Romney also has to be careful about budgeting his resources. There is a reason that Obama is attacking Romney even before he is officially nominated - to deplete the Republican coffers. This is important - Obama's resources are UNLIMITED!! Forget a billion dollars or what is written in the column for his campaign funds. While those assets are daunting what really matters is the unlimited access, air time, attacks and pundit support he will receive from the media. Romney needs to answer but he also must have money left come October and at this rate, considering normal ramp ups, he will not.

As a side note; remember in 2010 a few Republicans were denied media access in key races - don't be surprised if there is a reoccurrence of some of those episodes. I'm sure the Democrats have already figured out how the media will help them with the debates because in anything remotely close to a fair debate - Obama loses badly. (Stephy already has his straight A+ report card ready to roll out for Obama's performances)
