Bill Maher Blames Conservatives for America's Obesity Problem

By Noel Sheppard | May 12, 2012 | 11:51

Noel Sheppard's picture

Is there anything liberals won't blame on conservatives?

On HBO's Real Time Friday, host Bill Maher actually accused the Right of being responsible for the obesity problem in the country (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BILL MAHER: You think conservatives should take some responsibility, because they sort of have made this a political issue that somehow eating lard out of a can is a virtue because "It’s about my freedom. You know, there are some freedoms in this country that are important: speech, assembly, religion, and eating s—t. And if you try to tell me." I mean, Sarah Palin showed up with sugar cookies.

And this guy considers himself to be a Libertarian.

How many Libertarians have you met that advocate government control of any human behavior?

Funnier still, this is the same guy that believes drugs should be legal because people should be allowed to smoke, shoot, or ingest any chemicals they want.

It is after all "their body."

But folks that feel the same way about food are destroying the country.

Great logic there, huh?

Fortunately for those that still have functioning brain cells, Grover Norquist was on the set to offer some much-needed sanity:

GROVER NORQUIST: I saw how you dropped the second amendment out of that little list there. Look, I do think that people should be free to make decisions good and bad, and I’m all in favor of people nagging them, but not with the government forcing them to tell them what to eat or ingest or not eat.

Maher would of course agree with this if it included drugs.

Go figure.

Um... sex, drugs, and rock and roll? Did everyone forget the 60s and imagine that conservatives were in power for 50 years?

Eating too much used to be looked at as a moral issue, and not just a health issue.

Lib educrats dropped PE from public schools

Lol. You can stay within

Submitted by redfish on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 7:25pm.

Lol. You can stay within healthy weight with only two years of PE , that's what I had in high school in LAUSD. There were no obese students that I remember, I don't even remember anyone that was overweight.

In general, I think the obesity problem is overstated, and is more due to changes in obesity guidelines than anything else. But there are still people who have problems and more super obese people than existed before, and I think people are looking to the wrong things to help them. The clue is very obese people tend to have more than one vice; many are smokers for instance.

Submitted by JanineC on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 7:14pm.

Well, then the educrats must have done that many, many moons ago, because we were not required to do PE as seniors back in the late 1970s. And I will tell you that I was not upset at all that I didn't have to take it!! Maybe that is one thing they did right. Sorry, but I never was the athletic type. Not everyone is.

Just do it in a State where there is no law demanding 'loser pay' costs. What difference does it make if Palins lose? Do what the Libs do...appeal, appeal appeal. Who cares if he wins each new challenge? Bankrupt the SOB. And if Soros or anybody else steps in to help, find some way of doing the same to them. Sure you may not bankrupt them...just keep 'em buried in paperwork and further demands on their time. Oh yeah..AND BE RELENTLESS NEVER QUIT HOUND THEM INTO WHATEVER. Who are they gonna turn to for solace ? YHVH? They're friggin' athiests.

Submitted by tcm14 on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 12:29pm.

So according to Maher, eating brownies is bad, but pot brownies, GO FOR IT!!! Maybe that is how obese people could get Maher's approval, by jamming their food full of drugs first. Man, his scrawny ass is just dying to use the government to tell people what to do so they can be exactly like him.

As a matter of fact, marijuana contains tetrhahydrocannabinol or THC for short. A pharmaceutical product containing a purified and standardized form of THC, with a generic drug name of dronabinol (trade name is "Marinol") is approved by the FDA for stimulation of appetite (and resulting weight gain) coming from chronic nausea/vomiting from chemotherapy, radiation therapy and wasting (cachexia) at the AIDS clinical stage of HIV infection. Of course, it is a schedule III narcotic denoting that it has significant abuse potential. It used to be a schedule II drug (reserved for the most addictive drugs/narcotics like oxycodone, morphine, etc.), but was reclassified with the AIDS epidemic of the 80s/90s.

And of course, there are all of the miracle claims about marijuana for everything from nail fungus to a severed limb. None of those claims are backed up by literature sufficient for FDA approval.

Medical minute over.

Bill Maher - $10 words stuffed in a penny brain

Submitted by powers2be on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 1:46pm.

My brother first introduced me to this guy when he had his "politcally incorrect" sorry fest on the networks. I watch one and only one show with my brother and had to laugh listening to his progressive diatribe and then hearing him proclaim he was a libertarian. I thought, at the time, that he was simply stupid and actually thought that libertarian was smart people speak for liberal. What saddened me most was my brother liked the show and wasn't smart enough to realize he was being brainwashed by a moron.

I always wondered about

Submitted by ozarkian on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 11:58pm.

I always wondered about Moochelle picking the "cause" she did...Seems like it is (at least sometimes) more of a black female problem, which fits right in with her only interest -- race (well, and vacations....and "expensive wines...") Anyway, I'm not sayin' that out of my own thoughts; but more because I see headlines like the recent one here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/06/opinion/sunday/why-black-women-are-fat...

Seems it is a political statement, according to the writer of this piece, one whom I doubt is to the "right," writing for the NYT as she does. And it has to do with pride in one's racial group...again, a fixation for the left, not the right.

Per Tablespoon:

Lard = 115 Calories
Butter = 426 Calories
Crisco Shortening = 110 Calories
Canola Oil = 120 Calories

Dumbass strikes again!

For the record, lard doesn't taste like pork, has a very high smoking point, hence it is preferred for flaky stuff like biscuits and pie crusts. And of course, if you save your pork lard from yummy stuff like my mexican roasted pork butt, you can save it and then do cool things like saute your mushrooms in it.

Personal observations on blubber

Submitted by Gary Hall on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 2:39pm.

Well, let's see here.

Visiting a Walmart in a conservative white area of Texas, a few months back, allowed me to observe that someone down there is eating too much Texas BBQ, as well as drinking too much Shiner Beer.

On the other hand, walking into a Target store here in LA, in the South Central area - gave me a clear indication that the black liberal folks are even worse off.

Survey competed - it's diet and exercise ideology - not political ideology that adds weight.

Dr. Robert Atkins said for decades

Submitted by Paarl on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 7:33pm.

Eating fat does not make you fat.......Way back in the way back when my mother wanted my old man to slim down ...and I am talking 1960 to 1969...out went the potatoes and bread and pasta and noodles and in came the sour cream and meat and chicken and veggies smothered in butter...

Soda pop was never in the house....high sugar consumption via direct consumption of the sugar itself and via cheap and plentiful carbohydrates is an issue in diets ....

but the REAL REAL REAL REAL cause of obesity is the growing number of children born and raised
in single parent families........buying..preparing..cooking...cleaning ..for just one dinner is a lot of work
and even the most conscientious single parent just cannot do it as well and as frequently as a mom/dad family...sorry... the arithmetic of how many minutes there are in a day does not allow single parent families to prepare proper food 5 days a week..let alone having eggs/bacon a few morns a week instead of carb/sugar laded cereal...

AND eggs fried in bacon fat is one of the finest gifts of life on God's green earth !!! ;>)

Preparing food is easy unless

Submitted by redfish on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 8:49pm.

Preparing food is easy unless you do a big dish -- just throw some stuff on a pan and grill it / stir fry it. It takes 5 minutes to prepare fish for a single person, you just put some seasoning on the fillet put it in the pan, flip it a few times and that's it. If you want do do more at once, get a bigger pan. You don't need to make a rack of lamb for dinner.

Pasta is also easy and quick to make, and baking a potato you just need to let it sit in a toaster oven.

I don't know whether you're talking from experience, but in general I think people make a bigger deal out of this than there is. And buying prepared food or eating out will actually cost you more money, so its bad all around. But among people I know, there is kind of a laziness in eating habits; snacking, eating soda, not even trying to prepare food. And a laziness in spending habits; buying a $4 starbucks coffee each day for instance. You know how much that costs in the long run?

BMI

Submitted by Blorg on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 4:24pm.

In 1998 the BMI (body mass index) values used to define "overweight" and "obese" were redefined downward. This, of course, resulted in more people be defined as overweight and obese. Redefine, then wait a few years until most people have forgotten the lowered standards and bingo: an epidemic of obesity. Add in to that mix the fact that BMI is mostly BS anyhow. Michael Jordan in his prime was classed as overweight.

Obesity is common in prosperous societies

Submitted by JanineC on Sat, 05/12/2012 - 7:34pm.

To be honest, obesity is the result of our prosperity and overabundance of choice. I still think that it should be individual choice and if people want to be overweight, that is their own business--not government's. I struggled for years and years trying to be the perfect weight and it just wasn't in my genes. I never got like some of the people (a lot of people today are huge massive blobs), but I was also never stick thin either. Some people are just not naturally thin. A lot of it depends on your early years too. People form all the fat cells they ever will have when they are children. You don't necessarily have to be very fat as a kid to have a lot of fat cells, but once you form those cells, they are always there and it is harder to lose weight when you are older. I don't think PE in the last two years in high school really makes much of a difference with regard to keeping thin. Besides, I don't remember getting all that much exercise in PE. We mostly participated in various sports or gymnastics, but half the time you still had to wait on the sidelines for your turn. I hated running laps because I would get horrible side aches.

Maher is a die hard liberal

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 05/13/2012 - 10:09am.

Maher is a die hard liberal. True to form, he blames Conservatives for someone else's individual choices. Someone is over weight? That's not their fault, it's the fault of the Conservatives for allowing them their own choice of what to eat, how much to eat, ect. It's far better if the federal government make those types of choices for us. Unless, of course, the Conservatives are in control of that government. Then it's "keep your hands out of my pantry, Conservatives!" Isn't that right?

Submitted by ozarkian on Mon, 05/14/2012 - 12:15am.

There HAVE been meds that help, no matter what your "cause" theory is. I remember when phen-fen was legal, and everybody I worked with went to the same Dr. and were all gettin' thin. Then they took half of i (one of the meds in the combo) off the market and everybody went back. Funny how a drug that really works for weight loss is taken off, but others with side effects five pages long stay on. The diet/obesity industry rakes in billions, and they don't want people to find a way not to have to buy/try their products. And that goes for everything from silly pills that don't do anything to weight watchers to the produce and beef industries.
