Chrystia Freeland on Ann Romney: 'Michelle Obama Gets Bashed If She Wears Expensive Clothes'

As NewsBusters reported, Ann Romney got mercilessly attacked last week for having the unmitigated audacity to wear a $990 shirt on television.

On CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday, Thomson Reuters' Chrystia Freeland said this was "fair" and "fine" because "Michelle Obama gets bashed if she wears expensive clothes" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: Chrystia, what about the other burning issue, the fact that Ann Romney went on CBS this morning and it was noted that she was wearing a $990 shirt. Is it fair for the press to keep bringing this up? OK. They're wealthy. We get it.

CHRYSTIA FREELAND, THOMSON REUTERS: Yes, sure. Sure, it's fair. I mean, Michelle Obama gets bashed if she wears expensive clothes. So, yes, I think that's fine.

Really? I challenge Freeland to show examples of non-conservative media members bashing Mrs. Obama for wearing expensive clothes.

From what I've seen, the first lady gets fawned and gushed over for whatever she puts on.

As for Kurtz, he seemed just "fine" with Freeland's answer and quickly moved on to another subject:

KURTZ: All right. We see the videotape there from CBS. Jonah Goldberg, before we go, in a couple of sentences, tell us the thesis of your book, "The Tyranny of Cliches".

I guess that settled that.

According to CNN's Reliable Sources, it's "fair" and "fine" to attack Mrs. Romney's attire because "Michelle Obama gets bashed if she wears expensive clothes."

So don't be at all surprised when it continues to happen - to Mrs. Romney, of course! - for the next six months.

Nice media analysis there, Howie. You're a real pro.

Ann Romney has probably been

Submitted by motherbelt on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 7:03pm.

Ann Romney has probably been buying her clothes where she does for years.

It's Mrs. Obama  "from the south side of Chicago" who went nuts when she got a taste of "high (read: expensive) fashion."

Actually, Chrystia - if

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 5:54pm.

Actually, Chrystia - if Mooooooooooooochelle DOES get 'bashed' (and who in the MSM or StateRun Media 'bashes' her, anyway?) - I think it's because she's such a phony and a hypocrit, as well as the fact that she is living like a modern-day Marie Antionette - replete with the attitude - and has spent litterally tens, if not hundreds, of millions of US taxpayer (as well as borrowed and printed) dollars for her own pleasure, comfort, and experience.

I don't know, or care, if Mooooooooooochelle pays for her clothes anyway - but you can be damn sure that she can afford them, and you can also be damn sure that she doesn't shop at WalMart or Target - unless it's for some phony photo-op. To the best of my knowledge, Ann Romney hasn't expected the American public to pay for any of her clothes - including that hideous T-shirt that she wore, which started this whole stupid subject anyway.

The more they criticize Mrs. Romney, the more they humanize her

Ann Romney looks great in that shirt.

Should she apologize for not letting herself become a walking advertisement for J Crew?

Submitted by forest on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 6:47pm.

If "bashing" means getting tongue bathes for being the most fashionable 1st lady ever and for having great arms, then yeah, Michelle gets "bashed" by the media.

Maybe the problem is Ann has

Submitted by ant on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 7:13pm.

Maybe the problem is Ann has ALWAYS been proud of her Country.Or that they actually took a car on vacation and not Air Force 2 on 17 vacations at public expense. Or that Michelle doesn't mean or intend to always be a shameless grifter but "change takes time".

Michelle Obama gets praised by the media for her "fashion sense"

Submitted by OxyCon on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 7:25pm.

Michelle Obama gets praised by the media for her "fashion sense". There's never any mention about the price of her lavish, ill-chosen clothes in the media. The only place Michelle Obama gets criticized for wearing expensive clothes is on a handful of blogs and twitter, and that only happens when she wears $500.00 sneakers to a homeless shelter.

The media on the other hand explicitly launched an attack on the cost of Ann Romney's clothing, going so far as to warn her to wear cheap, off the rack clothes, lest she be attacked again.

Ann vs Moooochelle

Submitted by NVRAT on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 8:15pm.

Ann Romney is easy to look at regardless of what she wears. MOOOOCHELLE on the other hand want`s to make you throw-up weather it`s a $900 blouse/shirt or a $2,500 dress she still looks like she was born and raised in a circus. That`s the difference between class and, well you know what I mean. I think the comparison is that Moooochelle is trying to make everybody believe that she is a common person and shops at Target when in reality everybody known where she shops. That`s why Mooochelle gets bashed when she wears expensive clothing.

I don't think Mooooooooochelle even cut it with the African women on one of her many vacations - either on the dance floor or in a fashion sense.

If Anne Romney wants to

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 11:51pm.

If Ann Romney wants to foolishly spend $990 of her own money on a freakin' tee shirt, that's her business, not mine. If the media deliberately slobbers over Michelle Obama's "wonderful fashion sense" as part of their dishonest pandering efforts to boost the Obamas in their political efforts, then it becomes our business.

Moochelle does NOT get bashed

Submitted by Trix Rabbit on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 11:20pm.

Moochelle does NOT get bashed for wearing expensive clothes. No.

She gets bashed because some limp-wristed designer decides to paint her up like the north end of a southbound mandrill, dress her like a Bulgarian peasant, and parade her around as the height of all womanhood.

For the MSM: In your pomp and all your glory, you're a poorer man than me.  As you lick the boots of death born out of fear.

Michelle's wardrobe gets bashed not because of the price, but because they look like they came from a low cost second hand store. A fashionable dresser she is not. All of her clothing looks cheap.

moments, I have remade the movie "Carrie" in my head. With the FLOTUS playing the Sissy Spacek part, and the fashion designers playing the Nancy Allen/John Travolta types making her believe she is just the absolute bees knees.........but, rather than the bucket of blood ending, it's the two of them being ushered out of the WH, with all of us great unwashed yelling things like "Don't let the screen door hit ya.......Hit the road Jack..........Nah nah nah nah hey hey hey good bye".............and relishing the surprised/hateful looks on their faces when they realize 2/3 of the population never "loved" them at all, just tolerated them.

The main stream media has

Submitted by DaChew on Mon, 05/07/2012 - 11:53am.

The main stream media has never "bashed" Michelle over the cost of her wardrobe - THAT'S THE WHOLE FREAKIN' POINT.
The media was completely immersed in discussion of the "appropriatness" of the cost of Sarah Palin's wardrobe for months during the 2008 election. They never said a thing about Michelle. When the election was over they began to fawn over Michelle's fashion sense, never once questioning the cost of her clothing. That hypocrisy began to be pointed out by conservative comentators. Nobody in the main stream media ever questioned the appropriateness of Michelle's wardrobe. Now, they're back to bashing the conservative and acting as if they're being balanced because somebody, not them, pointed out Michelle's clothes.
They are just the biggest liars.
