Stephen Colbert Calls Charles Krauthammer 'Count Chocula'

By Noel Sheppard | April 27, 2012 | 16:51

Noel Sheppard's picture

Can you imagine a liberal comedian demeaning the appearance of a physically handicapped, Pulitzer Prize-winning, liberal syndicated columnist?

On Thursday, Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert called Charles Krauthammer "Count Chocula" (video follows with commentary):

As liberals hold the Pulitzer Prize in tremendously high esteem, I wonder if Colbert knew Krauthammer has been bestowed this award.

And was the comedian aware that Krauthammer became a paraplegic as a result of a car accident while he was attending Harvard Medical School?

If Colbert knew this, would he still ridicule Krauthammer's appearance?

Assuming the answer is "Yes," now imagine Krauthammer was a liberal paraplegic who won the Pulitzer Prize.

Seems a metaphysical certitude no left-leaning comedian would ever mock such a person's physical appearance.

But liberals are the more tolerant, aren't they?

Submitted by mom_rox on Fri, 04/27/2012 - 8:08pm.

I searched this because I recalled him saying that he was diving in a swimming pool when the accident happened. also, imo, the Count Chocula comment is not a big deal. Dr. K. can handle it.

I found this very interesting C-SPAN article of an interview with Mr. Krauthammer (his parents have quite a story). Here is an excerpt (bolds are mine):

LAMB: What year did you have your diving accident

KRAUTHAMMER: 1972. I was a freshmen in medical school in my first year and ended being hospitalized for a year and two months. But since it happened at Harvard Medical School, in one of the swimming pools of the hotels at the complex, I ended up doing my year-plus stint as a patient in Harvard teaching hospitals so that I was able to do my second year of medical school in the hospital as a patient

Even though I wasn’t able to attend any classes, I’d study at night. And they were very good at having the professors tutor me at night. Then I rejoined then I was released from the hospital, I rejoined my class for the third year. And then I graduated a year later.

LAMB: I don’t know about if you mind telling the story, but what happened in the diving accident.

KRAUTHAMMER: Very simple, I hit the bottom of the pool with my head and it caused no injury except a breaking of the spinal cord.

LAMB: And you spent and how long in the hospital

KRAUTHAMMER: Two months.

LAMB: What the reaction to that when it happened to you, I mean, during that time

KRAUTHAMMER: Well, being a medical student and that week studying neurology, which was rather ironic, the book I had with me when I was hurt was neuro-anatomy. I knew exactly what happened the second it happened. And I knew exactly what the consequences were and I knew what the future was. And I think that was a help to me, because I never had any illusions.

And a lot of my the bedmates I had on the wards where I was had a lot of illusions. And I didn’t have them, which I think was useful. So I knew you had two choices, you could give up or you could just pretend it hadn’t happened, or do you everything that you could to.

And what I resolved is I would never I would try never to let it change my life, or change the direction of my life. The irony is that I’d intended to a psychiatrist, which is about the one that and the radiology was about the only thing I could do. And that’s what I wanted to do, so I went ahead and did it.

But I concede the terminology is a bit tricky and that it would have been better had I avoided the words ["disability" and "disabled"] altogether.

How is it RLDS to contrast mockery related to a physical impairment/limitation with mockery which isn't? My comment was clearly relevant to the topic of the blog. It just so happened that Rush's references to Reich aptly illustrated my point. That's hardly indicative of a derangement syndrome.

I think a more appropriate area of inquiry in the realm of DS's would be, say, NB's obsession with Mike Malloy.

Jer,

NB's obssesion with Mike Malloy? What? You don't like that Newsbusters shines a light on the putrid things that come out of the mouth of a Liberal pundit?

Yes, Liberals like you would love it if everyone believed that your Left wingers were all about love and compassion. LOL

Mike Malloy, sadly, says some, if not, the most disgusting things that a human being could say about individuals he disagrees with and YES he is in YOUR camp. Live with him.

By the way, if you look at NB's purpose it is to shine a light on individuals like Mike Malloy. Again, unsure why NB following its mission means that it has DS.

And yes, you bringing up Rush Limbaugh and attempting a weak moral equivalancy, like you ALWAYS do, does mean DS on your part. Get it through your head, Jer, Liberals love to claim moral superiority all the time. They demand that we live by rules that they do not live by. It is not even that they try, but that they ignore at the outset!!!

We Conservatives can't make fun of invalids, of people who have an illness, but Liberals love, love to pick on and make fun of invalids specially if these are Conservatve leaning.

Again, I think you miss the whole thing about your side, about Liberals, "Live as we say not as we do!"

I point to the Left constantly going after daughters, sons, spouses of Republican politicians, but how you Left wingers get all upset if you believe the Right is going after the family of Left wingers.

If you're all butthurt about being called something other than the uber-conservative you claim to be, that's on you.

I'm guessing that most, left or right, didn't know. I'm also guessing that most that claim to have known, left or right, are liars.

That said, if Colbert wants any kind of relevance whatsoever, then he should have known.

I refer to a fully-grown psudo-black man as Boy Baraka because he has the composure, temperment, maturity, attitude, and personality of a self-absorbed, spoiled, petulant, never-been-told-no, narcississic, classless, all-about-me punk-ass teenage momma's boy.

And that's when I'm being polite..............the guy deserves the worst that I, or anybody else with any common sense, can dish out to him................he is dishing out WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse to this country than just derogitory adjectives.

a swimming pool. This is how Charles Krauthammer described it to Brian Lamb in a C-SPAN interview:

Medicine is a very physically demanding profession at all times.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 04/28/2012 - 12:11am.

Especially when you are still a student and resident/fellow running around 24 hours per day at the behest of faculty, preceptors and attending physicians. Krauthammer is one of the few truly physically disabled physicians that I know who managed to complete his education WHILE disabled. For those of you not in the profession, let me tell you that shows not only dedication, but a perseverance that is unparalleled. While psychiatry is certainly not as physically demanding as various surgical specialties or physical medicine, it is demanding enough that it took a lot of drive for him to complete the training.

Krauthammer, when in professional practice, was a highly regarded expert on bipolar disorder, previously called bipolar affective disorder, manic depression and other similar terms. He literally re-wrote the book on this particular hard-to-treat mental illness, specifically in terms of more difficult cases. He made substantial contributions to his profession, and is an inspiration to many medical students and physicians who faced similar physical difficulties but completed their training and work in the profession to better the human condition.

While I don't argue with Colbert's right to comment about Krauthammer, as usual, his comments are crass and demeaning. If Krauthammer were a paraplegic liberal commentator, Colbert would have been taken off the air and eviscerated. Glad to see the liberal double standard is still alive.

I can see both sides, but...

Submitted by jhandyman on Sat, 04/28/2012 - 7:59am.

I agree that Cobert and his Liberal buddies have been severely mis-educated but in stepping back a little, it's probably a good thing that we can antagonize each other without predjudice. Krouthammer may not love the comment but I'm sure he prefers equal treatment. On the other hand, If only the left could see this point before presenting the Race or Gender cards when a conservative attacks a liberal. There are many incidences of this kind of funny business all day long, on both sides but it does seem that it's always the left that tries to convince the public that Rebublicans are racist, anti-woman, and anti-senior. I think it's a mistake to consider Cobert 'anti-conservative and physically challenged'; he's just anti-conservative and an idiot. I think he is simply a mis-educated, self-serving, lying, liberal, elitist, who is well-compensated by the devil; so he will continue to do what he does until Americans stop allowing their devil-side to pay him with the hard earned money of both sides.
