MSNBC's Martin Bashir Calls Ann Romney 'Fake' and 'Two-Faced'

By Noel Sheppard | April 17, 2012 | 16:59

Noel Sheppard's picture

It's quite clear that on MSNBC, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's family is not going to be considered off-limits to commentator attacks during this campaign season.

On Tuesday's Martin Bashir show, in a closing segment about rock star Ted Nugent's endorsement of the former Massachusetts governor, the host attacked Ann Romney as being "fake" and "two-faced" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

MARTIN BASHIR: Now consider this: the Romneys attacked Hilary Rosen because she had failed to include the words “outside of the home” when she said Ann Romney had never worked a day in her life. Hilary Rosen, who doesn’t work for the president and is an independent commentator, admitted that it was a mistake and has apologized.

Actually, as National Review's Jim Geraghty reported Thursday, Rosen's ties to the Obama White House are extreme and undeniable - except of course for a shill like Bashir. But I digress:

BASHIR: Meanwhile, Mitt Romney welcomes the endorsement of a man who tells the president to suck on his machine gun, calls the president an expletive, calls the Secretary of State an expletive, and claims that the entire administration wants to turn America into an Islamic suburb of the most populated Muslim nation on earth.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Actually, Nugent's vulgar comments concerning Obama and Clinton happened in 2007 before the former became president and the latter the Secretary of State. At the time, they were both just presidential candidates.

Bashir should have known this as he played Nugent's related comments for his viewers earlier in the segment with "2007" in the top left corner of the screen.

But why let facts get in the way when you're on a roll:

BASHIR: Mr. Romney’s spokesperson has just said that he believes everyone needs to be civil. But no sign yet of him rejecting Nugent’s endorsement.

You have to hand it to Mitt and Ann Romney. Even their righteous indignation is as fake and as two-faced as everything else that marks their presidential campaign.

Let's be clear: I in no way condone some of the things Nugent has said about Obama, and Romney probably shouldn't either. That's his call.

However, for a so-called "news anchor" on a so-called "news channel" to drag Romney's wife into his condemnation should be unacceptable even at MSNBC.

Or has this network strayed so far from any concern about journalistic integrity that this no longer matters to those running it?

If that is the case, maybe Comcast, General Electric, and NBC should make an announcement that MSNBC is no longer part of their news division and is instead just simply entertainment.

At least then viewers wouldn't be misled into thinking they were watching something they should in any way take seriously.

The Nuge's actual comment:

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 04/17/2012 - 6:05pm.

"If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year," he said angrily.

Not Obama.  Nugent.

Granted, the rest of his language is a tad over the top, (but not a threat, IMO) and of course, the DNC poodle happily humps it....totally disregarding her own flaming rhetoric.  Go figure.

for not rejecting Maher's  endorsement, and his $1 million?

Liberals  not only have standards, they have double standards.

Well, the Nuge did say "We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November."

That's clearly a call to violent beheading, although one wonders  why he would advocate waiting  until November.... why not just do it now?

*Unlike the Union boss who said "We have to take these sons-of-bitches out."

I'm sure he meant "to dinner and a movie."

He didn't drink, didn't smoke, and spent an hour on the phone every night from Europe with his kids.

I never cared for his music, but I think he's too cool for school....and he has enough $$ that if the Obama administration cares to screw with him, he'll screw right back. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

He's very careful...

Submitted by lunchbox on Tue, 04/17/2012 - 8:36pm.

He's very careful to point out that Hilary Rosen "doesn’t work for the president and is an independent commentator" when she slams Ann Romney. But he slams Romney for Ted Nugent's words because Nugent supports him. Does Nugent work for the Romney campaign? And I missed his commentary on Obama cutting ties with Maher. Is that one coming tomorrow?

Martin Bashir, a sod-all interviewer

Submitted by CO2Maker on Tue, 04/17/2012 - 10:40pm.

It's a pun, btw.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about merry Martin:
-------------------
In 2003, Bashir conducted a series of interviews with pop singer Michael Jackson, as part of a documentary for ITV. Following the broadcast, which was viewed by 14 million in the UK and 38 million in the US, several media personalities accused Bashir of yellow journalism, claiming that he deliberately doctored the recordings in order to paint Jackson in an unflattering light, as well as emphasising the allegations of child molestation made against Jackson. The New York Times called Bashir's journalism style "callous self-interest masked as sympathy."

In response, Jackson and his personal cameraman released a rebuttal interview, which showed Bashir complimenting Jackson for the "spiritual" quality of the Neverland Ranch, thus contradicting the journalist's previous statements that it was a "dangerous place" for children. Bashir also describes Jackson as a wonderful father and says that Jackson's relationship with his children "almost makes him weep".

Dieter Wiesner, the pop star's manager from 1996 to 2003, made this statement about the influence of Bashir's documentary on Michael Jackson:

"It broke him. It killed him. He took a long time to die, but it started that night. Previously the drugs were a crutch, but after that they became a necessity."
Bashir later said of Jackson during ABC's coverage of his death,

"When I made the documentary, there was a small part that contained a controversy concerning his relationship with young people. But the truth is that he was never convicted of any crime, and I never saw any wrongdoing myself."

------------

Given what editing has become, I'd strongly recommend to anyone engaging the MSM to do so on the condition that they can simultaneously record any and all interviews. They don't have to be from an optimum location, just one that records what takes place. Think of it as an insurance policy to keep things honest.

If it weren't for sites like the DC, almost nobody in America would even know MSNBC exists or what they say. There is such fringe insanity going on over there, it's simply hilarious. I suspect if we quit monitoring what they say, their viewership would drop by 25%.
