Stewart Attacks Palin's 'Today' Appearance: 'Another Place for You to Tout Your Brand of Homespun Nonsense'

By Noel Sheppard | April 04, 2012 | 09:34

Noel Sheppard's picture

I don't know about you, but I thought Sarah Palin did an extremely good job in her guest-host stint on NBC's Today show Tuesday.

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart predictably didn't, and began his Daily Show later that evening with a blistering attack on the former Alaska governor (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JON STEWART, HOST: The former Alaska Governor was actually quite good and likable in this setting. My issue was not with how I viewed Governor Palin as co-host of the Today show. It was mostly with how Governor Palin seemed to view it.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MATT LAUER, TODAY SHOW CO-HOST: Well, we did read a tweet you sent out that said "gonna go rogue and infiltrate some turf." What exactly, what exactly does that mean?

SARAH PALIN: What do you think it means?

[Laughter]

(END VIDEO CLIP)

STEWART: Ooh. Infiltrating the Today show. I think it means you’re cynically exploiting a manufactured notion of yourself as a crusader against a monolithic exclusionary activist liberal media whilst actually enjoying a mutually beneficial, symbiotic relationship with them only to the detriment to the rest of the country.

[Cheers and applause]

STEWART: Seriously, it's the Today show! Do you really believe co-hosting the Today show is entering the lion's den armed only with some Jesus fish earrings and an Iwo Jima-sized flag pin? Seriously, look at that f—king flag pin. If a hamster went to the moon, that is the flag it would plant. [Laughter] That thing's gigantic! [Applause]

But Governor Palin acts like she needs it to protect herself from the lamestream liberals like garlic to a vampire when the truth is, you’re at the Today show! You’re there to: talk about party planning with Tori Spelling; to pretend that you remember who Wilson Phillips is, or; to hang out for some light-hearted couch banter with Matt and Ann and Al instead of acting like you’re sitting with Che and Lenin and Saul Alinsky. You’re pretending this whole appearance is some uncommonly ballsy way of sticking it to the lamestream media. It’s just another place for you to tout your brand of homespun nonsense unchallenged!

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Honestly, do you think there's anything this woman could do that would get favorable reviews from the likes of Jon Stewart?

Can anyone explain exactly what Sarah Palin has done to warrant the continued harassment she gets from liberal media members?

For myself, it's this kind of ad hominem attack that led me to stop watching the Daily Show in 2004.

And Stewart points fingers at Palin for dividing the nation.

From my perspective, he is far more guilty of it than the conservatives he mercilessly attacks night in and night out.

"For myself, it's this kind of ad hominem attack that led me to stop watching the Daily Show in 2004."

What, it took you that long?

I only watched it for one month in 1997, with that previous host whose name escapes me and I don't bother looking up.

But at that point, I believe whether it was Stewart or this guy, it is still produced by Lizz Winstead (I think, but I'm still not going to bother looking it up), one of the worst stand-up comedians I ever saw on my college campus. Not worth it.

Again this Moron shows his hatred for Christianity and the Military. But I guess those who defend his ability to be a jackwagon will just have to "turn the other cheek" at his "humor". I'd like to see him diss some of the Iwo survivors still out there and watch the beat down he would get.

Submitted by NeoKong on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 10:34am.

She did not run past security and crash the set.
She was invited.
Her persona and her views are well known and they knew what they were getting when they booked her.
Palin speaks her mind.
As Jon surely knows, on shows like these they do a quick preliminary on how the show will go.
They discuss topics and guests and coordinate.
There are no big surprises.

It would be as if Jon invited Rush Limbaugh on his show and he was all flabbergasted that Rush took a jab at the President.
It's disingenuous.

Homespun Nonsense?

Submitted by iamsaved on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 10:43am.

It's the homespun nonsense that most of America loves. The elitists on the two left coasts haven't a clue. When the vitriol flows from the left a nerve has been touched and you know it's something that conservatives will love.

Once you hear Obama and his sychophants speak, presume it is a lie and proceed from there. On rare occasions, you might be pleasantly surprised when a truth accidentally slips out.

Who cares what he says??!!

Submitted by c5then on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 10:51am.

Jon Stewart is a sort-of kind-of comedien who has a sort-of kind-of comedy show. He reads a script on that show as he pretends to be a news reader.

Why does anybody care? Might as well worry about what Will Ferrel or Gabrial Iglasias says. The fact that he is a flamming liberal as well as the other writers on the show is well established by the fact that the show rarely pokes fun at liberals or democrats. The same day he chose to pontificate about Sarah Palin, Our doofus VP refered to Mitt Romney as "Senator Romney" and yet not a peep out of Stewart about that.

Submitted by Snappy on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 11:01am.

She scares them. She epitomizes the ordinary American, and it scares them that someone like that was able to garner the support she did. That her ideas were received with fanfare and approval from the "unwashed gun toting bible loving masses" . While I didn't and still don't agree with ALL of her ideas I do support the idea of her, and she does show that she understands and is a product of American Exceptionalism. The fact that someone can rise to the top without the benevolent arm of the ever protecting Federal Government, and nod of approval from the "Ruling Class elite", scares them silly as it undermines the meme they have been and continue to preach.
Someone like her, with her ideas of conservatism and limited government is supposed to be branded as a crackpot and shuffled to the side, the fact that she wasn't silenced and hasn't gone quietly away, shows there are still people in this country not buying what the left is selling. It is Jon Stewart, and others like him in the medias job to destroy her and continue to poke and prod until she does, so the liberal left can quietly go back to pushing their ideas and views largely unopposed.

FANTASTIC

Submitted by Founders1791 on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 5:48pm.

Stewart' response was exactly what you want to hear, if you are a fan of Sarah Palin. Why? Because it is further proof that Liberals are TERRIFIED of her and can't help themselves in showing their disdain at nearly every sentence. They are so apoplectic they now constantly walk the line of flat out (HBO) Bill Maher style of hate.

Would anyone think that of 'real' VP Joe Biden? Heck, does anyone actually know who he is? Let alone care? No one cares about 'him', even in his own party.

Liberals and Rino's hate outsiders that don't conform to 'the rigged game'.

The GOP Establishment doesn't realize the 'only one' in their field of conservatives has ...genuine authenticity, electricity, and ability... to confuse and overpower our enemies, is Governor Sarah Palin.

Think about it folks. Why are we thinking of guys like Mitt, Rick, or Newt when NONE OF THEM excite the base, have a better or longer record in governance, attracts new people into the tent, or has been vetted as well as Sarah.

Four (4) years of constant vulgar, demeaning, and bigoted hatred towards her and her family, and SHE STILL ROCKS THEM TO THEIR CORE!

Moderates loose elections. Conservatives win elections.
