David Letterman: Rachel Maddow 'Probably the Smartest Person' in 'All of Journalism'

By Noel Sheppard | March 27, 2012 | 08:41

Noel Sheppard's picture

When you think of MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, do you consider her one of the smartest people in all of journalism today?

David Letterman does, and actually said so as he introduced her on Monday's CBS Late Show (video follows with transcript and commentary):

DAVID LETTERMAN: Ladies and gentlemen, our first guest is an Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, and I think probably in all of broadcasting, in all of journalism, probably the smartest person.

PAUL SHAFFER: Wow, that’s a beautiful compliment. That’s fantastic.

[Audience applause]

LETTERMAN: In addition to being wildly smart she's also savvy. Savvy.

SHAFFER: There's a difference there?

LETTERMAN: Oh yeah. I mean how many smart dumb people do you know? I mean quite a few. “Oh I'm so smart but you know, I can't unbutton my fly.” You know.

SHAFFER: You are talking about street smarts too.

LETTERMAN: Exactly. In addition to being savvy, she's also street smarts.

SHAFFER: Yeah, she's street.

LETTERMAN: Did I mention hip?

SHAFFER: Hip too. She is the hippest.

LETTERMAN: She can smell something going down from a mile away. I don't know.

As NewsBusters readers are fully aware, we spend a lot of time exposing Maddow's inanities and misstatements.

Quite frankly, if I could stand watching her every day, I believe I could catch her in a significant faux pas at least once a week.

Yet folks like Letterman think she's one of the smartest people in journalism today.

Does that say more about Letterman or the state of this industry?

Hmmm.

Shoot,

Submitted by texastommy on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 8:55am.

Compared to Letterman, a box of rocks is pretty smart. I would agree that she's somewhere in that range.

Actually, she might be very intelligent. That doesn't make her right about anything. And it fuels her "Im superior to you" attitude that all must have to get their Liberal membership cards.

Why must they tells us how smart they are?

Submitted by UltraC on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 1:19pm.

You're correct there, texastommy. And you touched on something I've noticed from folks like Maddow: They spend an awful lot of time trying to convince us how smart they are. Why the insecurity?

In past discussions with liberals, I'll notice they'll start the name-dropping or "here's my resume of superior intelligence". Usually a sign they're losing an argument because they don't have facts/logic on their side. This tactic is usually used right before they call you a "bigot"...

Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.  -- Ronald Wilson Reagan

Maddow is to journalism as

Submitted by celator on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 9:04am.

Maddow is to journalism as Letterman is to comedy.

David, the aging lecher, surely knows Maddow was hired to advocate for hard left causes. In that quest, she omits relevant facts, spins key points, distorts the truth, mocks opposing views and self congratulates herself for a job well done. A total fraud.

Submitted by Arlen Cooper on Tue, 03/27/2012 - 9:02am.

There was a time when Letterman was funny, at least I thought he was. But the older he gets & the richer he gets, ... the more his ultra liberalism gets in the way of a decent "The Late Show" broadcast. I find even his "gapped-tooth grin" repulsive. Just the fact that he said Madcow is, "in all of journalism, probably the smartest person," shows that his sense-of-humor is not a part of his routine. He has a political agenda, ... not an entertainment agenda. I quit viewing years back.
