White House Admits Asking Media to Scrub Reports of Malia Obama's Mexican Vacation

By Noel Sheppard | March 20, 2012 | 09:50

Noel Sheppard's picture

After it was reported Monday that Malia Obama was going to Mexico for spring break with 25 Secret Service agents, people began to notice that such reports were being scrubbed from the Internet.

Politico's Dylan Byers reported Tuesday this was done at the request of the White House:

The AFP page for the story now links to a story titled "Senegal music star Youssou Ndour hits campaign trail," as does the Yahoo page. The Huffington Post page now links directly back to the Huffington Post homepage. The Daily Mail, Telegraph, and Australian stories now lead to 404 error pages, reading "page not found."

In an update, Byers explained who was responsible for the scrubbing:

Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, emails to confirm this was a White House effort:

From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls.

Must be nice to command such an obedient media.

Didn't the media rake the Bush twins over the coals for 8 years? Granted, they did some stupid things, as will the Obumble girls, but the media went out of their way to report on Bush's girls. Did Bush ask the media to lay off? don't think so. Any one know better?

ABC News - Bush twins asked to leave Argentinia - False

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 11:40am.

Indeed. Check this out from ABC News, in 2005:

U.S. Embassy Asks Bush Twins to Leave Country

The sick part about this, is that ABC's headline is set up as a factual event. However, if you read through the entire piece, we find out that the report is false:

Official response from the US Embassy in Argentina: We have seen a report from news sources stating that Embassy officials strongly suggested that President Bush’s daughters curtail their visit in Argentina. This is false, as are other aspects of the report referring to the Embassy’s position on the visit. The Embassy welcomes the visit and has provided close support and cooperation.

And, of course, along the way, ABC News can't resist repeating the reports of the Bush twins running down the halls of the hotel, in the nude, etc.

Still not scrubbed from the internet.

25 SS Agents

Submitted by Joe W. on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:02am.

I think 25 Secret Service Agents can provide for the "security" of these girls. But I don't think that the American People ought to pay them for having to do so.....Especially when they do this stuff behind our backs. How much does it cost for 25 agents and all of the equipment necessary to support them on this little "Spring Break"??? Disgusting...then again, EVERYTHING about the Obamas is disgusting.

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:11am.

I'm not even sure 25 would be enough, if they knew where they were heading. It's fairly routine for truckloads of bodies to be dumped on city streets down there. After all, they have our federal gubmint sending automatic rifles straight to the bad guys.

What's more stupid than the ham fisted way of scrubbing this story? How about the fact that it was leaked in the first place? Why would they even consider sending either of their girls to a country which our own State Dept has deemed unsafe for Americans?

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

It's good to be the king!!

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:27am.

As I've said elsewhere, the ONLY thing Obama and Michelle are good at is taking advantage of the perks of the office.

Does anyone seriously think they would send Malia on a spring break vacay to Mexico if Obama were not president?

But Joe W, that's what the Secret Service does.  They go everywhere the first family members go. Besides, we don't know that part of that expense isn't being paid for by the Obamas themselves. (I'll be nice and give them the benefit of the doubt).  After all, they pay part of the expenses when the SS accompanies them to Martha's Vineyard.

OTOH,  I heard Glenn Beck for a few minutes this AM complaining about the Secret Service agents being put in harm's way for a stupid vacation.  And I think THAT's a stupid observation.

Because that's what the Secret Service DOES.  They put themselves in harm's way to protect the president and his family.  I'll bet if they asked for volunteers to go on this trip, there was no shortage of hands raised.

Get a grip

Submitted by tjc-illinois on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:41am.

The State Department warns people to avoid Mexico for spring break and this is how Obama responds? Do they not talk to each other.

The Secret Service does put itself in harms way to protect its charges. But that does not give their charges carte blanche to take unnecessary risks. This is NOT a vacation for them, they are WORKING, doing their job. I am sure it is no picnic guarding a bunch of 13 year olds.

Finally, given the fact that this First Family seems to always be taking vacations, I would like to see a breakdown of what the Obama's pay out of their pocket and we (those paying taxes) pay out of our pockets.

Excuse me, it seems to me that you are the one who needs to "get a grip."

Do you really think that their vacation area wasn't scrutinized ahead of time; that they are plunging willy-nilly into danger?

The administration did put out a breakdown of who paid what for the Obama's  Martha's Vineyard vaction.  I'm not going to do your work for you;  go find it if you want to see it.  So I'm sure there will be one for this too.  I wonder if you'll believe it anyway.

In the meantime, I'll cue up the "you're just a liberal who's defending Obama" attack on me.

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 4:17pm.

The Secret Service has the job of protecting the President's family, but that doesn't mean the President should expose them, or his family, to unwarranted risk. No matter how safe the Mexican location appears, Mexico is a badlands subject to more risk than if Malia would vacation in the USA.

Would the SS need as many personnel for a domestic vacation?

The SS may advise against the trip but if the President says go, then the SS goes. The SS would then be placed in an increased risk situation because of the arrogance and selfishness of the Obama's.

What about the increased risk to the other students with Malia? If an attack on Malia or the SS were to occur, the other students may be in the crossfire. The other students are at increased risks due to their association with Malia, including ordinary kidnapping for ransom of such a high profile child.

If there were an attack on one of the other children would the SS not respond, therefore increasing their risk of death or injury? If so, the inclusion of the other children on the trip, especially so many others, presents as increased security risk to everyone.

Did the other students ride on government aircraft or government vehicles? What about food and incidentals consumed during the trips? Will we ever know the truth about the costs covered by the Obama's as well as other students on the trip?

In a time Obama pushes domestic labor and manufacture, as well as the economic recession, an international vacation for the one daughter, even if you consider it OK for the 13 year old to go without a parent, wouldn't it make more sense economically to spend dollars in an American vacation location instead of enriching free market's abroad? (Yes, that's a rhetorical question, though it should be forefront in the discussion)

In general, the President should be setting an example for the country. His children may be unwilling participants in this but that is their lot in life given the aspirations of the father. Given the parade of ostentatious vacation these moochers in the White House have regaled in, and the Marxist rhetoric daddy spews non-stop, this trip to Mexico by Malia looks worse than it may have otherwise. Sins of the father.

I agree, mb

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:58am.

This is principally a POTUS family security issue -- routine for the Secret Service.

It's also a service provided to former Presidents. Bill Clinton gets a Secret Service detail as he travels around the globe making $ millions. He also has a Secret Service detachment assigned to the Clinton's residence in Chappaqua, NY, where they reside in separate quarters on the property while the Clintons bill Uncle Sam for the lodging (The monthly tab = the Clinton's mortgage payment).

The secondary story is that the President's daughter attends a private school that caters to the Washington political and business elites, who can afford to have their kids go to Mexico for a spring trip. But we all knew that. I'm sure the WH wants to downplay it while he tries to boilster his populist image that, but I believe security is the paramount reason.

the MSM is so complicit at taking orders from the Obama adminstration. This must come as a complete shock to all Newsbusters readers. It certainly is to me. I thought the coverage of the Obama adminstration and family was trasparent and objective. I guess from now on we will not know about Moochelle's lavish vacations and travels of their children at taxpayer cost. A few calls from Obama Kremlin will kill the stories.

If congress investigates "news scrubbing" it will be reported by the MSM as "congress attacks President for trying to protect his children."

If congress investigates the "green laundering" of money to his corporate corny's, it will be reported as "congressmen in the pockets of big oil attack Presidents green investment policies."

If congress investigates the overstepping of POTUS authority, it's "do nothing congress tries to halt Obama progress toward a full recovery."

As congress continues to investigate "fast and furious," it's "congress looking for administration scapegoats while lax gun laws continue to cost us the lives of our children."

Oh, and it will actually be "republican congress..." in each case.

The elite media should be ashamed of themselves, and they would be, if they were not the willing propaganda arm of this current regime.

Now, I contrast her age and preparation with 13 12 year olds going to a far more dangerous country, and all I can say is that the Obama's are just as careless with their daughters as they are with our country.

Is it newsworthy that Malia Obama is going to Mexico for spring break with 25 Secret Service agents in tow? Maybe, maybe not. There could be an argument for either side of this story. However, unless there is a major factual error, it is not for Big Brother in Washington to dictate to the media whether it is a newsworthy story or not. The media, I thought, had a backbone. Apparently I was wrong, or it apparently only shows up during certain administrations.

Also, they should have just let it be reported, and then asked the media to not focus on it, to let the kids have their privacy.

But asking to have the story completely "disappeared" is a bit much.

By being so ham-handed, they have actually increased the amount of attention on the trip, not only by the regular media, but the tabloid papparazzi.  Does anyone think the Enquirer, the Globe, the Star and all those other papers aren't rushing reporters down there right now, if they haven't already?

I wanna know if

Submitted by bkeyser on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:38am.

Eric Holder knows about this.

And, how many 13 year old girls are sent to Mexico for Spring Break? I didn't even know Middle School had a "Spring Break"; at least not the kind traditionally associated with girls traveling to exotic vacation locations. I hope she took some birth control with her; DOTUS Gone Wild!

Regardless of the benefits that come with the office of POTUS -and there should be benefits- the tin ear of this administration is astounding. You just know that Bush would never have gotten away with this and there's no way in hell the media would have scrubbed reports of it at a Bush White House request. This was asked to be scrubbed because of the optics, clearly. What a flagrant, dictatorial-type of thing to do. He should have sent her to Cuba.

Even if (With)Holder knew, he'd leave it alone - for two reasons. One is his subservience and obedience to his boss, Boy Baraka. And two is because we're dealing with 'black' people, and they have been persecuted enough in this country.

But, when a person is lying non-stop, and always trying to cover his/her own dishonest agenda...........at some point, they have to pay attention to their own stories, so that they don't incriminate themselves, and then have to invoke the 5th ammendment!!!

Do you remember that old Bob Dylan line - 'when you live outside the law, you must be honest'??? Obviously, the Baraka REGIME never listened to it!!!!

Submitted by NCfairandbalanced on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:45am.

You know, Obama may have just about every answer to all of this. His office does include perks, even his family. And because he has youngsters is not his fault. And maybe it does take that many SS to protect her. Maybe she's going with one of her friend's parents.

This might ALL be tolerable (ok, this still reeks regardless) but if he and his mouthpieces would just shut up about Mitt Romney doing things only rich people do, he would not have to politicize this thing. But he's knee deep in it, and can't get out...hence the coverup. And that answer...he does not have.

Anyone out there think that the media hasn't already thought this through as well?

This IS a story because it's taxpayer money being spent. The Obama's knew darn well no one would be criticizing Malia for this, they knew that they themselves, as parents and as the president, would be taking the heat. That is why they wanted it buried. And the press did their best to comply.

We're done.

Well folks…

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 11:14am.

… this is just another episode in the “Shameful Life of the Obama’s.” But, because it deals with a 12-13 year old (I really don’t care what age she is, BTW), it is disgusting that we the taxpayers have to fund this ‘playtime.’

Now, I live near a “Spring Break” town… the “scenery” (if you catch my drift) is impressive.
Unfortunately, the levels of class, conversation, comportment, sobriety, driving/water safety, and discipline fall by the wayside in most cases. It’s an OWS movement… but with hotels, restaurants, and bathrooms (All mostly ‘trashed’ by the time the kids leave).

And, if anybody thinks there are enough LEO’s or Security Personnel around to protect their kids from themselves - they are wrong.

Good grief – How I hate having to sit next to a kid wearing an ‘Obama-shirt’ at the bar!! And the only good thing is that like Basketball Season, this Spring Break nonsense will soon be over.

Vital News Interest?

Submitted by bdshepherd on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 12:50pm.

This isn’t about the kid (or shouldn’t be). What makes this news-worthy is her (1) parents who think sending a 13 year-old girl on Spring Break is appropriate, (2) parents who think a destination that requires 25 of the best trained bodyguards in the world to keep them safe is an appropriate place to send a young girl, and (3) parents' attempt to shut down the story.

You don’t want people paying attention? Then don’t send your kid somewhere she needs a platoon of armed guards (paid for by our tax dollars) to keep her safe. Morons.

Spring Break?

Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 1:18pm.

How many 13 year olds get to go to Mexico, without their parents, surprisingly enough, for "spring break?" And, yet, Obama wants us to believe that he's just like the rest of us?

By the way, isn't it a tad early for "spring break?" I guess that's one of the perks of sending your children to a privileged private school. No need to follow those pesky public school schedules.

Malia en Mexico

Submitted by Jasonn on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 4:33pm.

With regard to the news blackout on Malia Obama doing spring break in Oaxaca, I agree with giving the First Daughters their privacy where there is no public interest involved, but in this case I expect the taxpayers are footing the bill for travel and protection for Malia and her friends.

I expect that the cost to taxpayers will be significant in times when the country is in serious debt and when ordinary Americans have been warned against vacationing in Mexico.

Seems to me that the Obamas should receive all the attention they deserve for lavish spending of our tax dollars while the rest of us are struggling to make ends meet.

THIS IS WRONG

Submitted by gus on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 5:16pm.

The President of the United States, or his wife, have NO BUSINESS telling ANY media outlet what they can or should publish.
This is an abuse of power. Doesn't matter what their reason is. I do recall the NYT publishing GOVT/SECURITY SECRETS, with apparent glee.
There is NO WAY, that the majority of the LIBTARD Media would EVER scrub a story that a Republican asked for them to scrub.
Furthermore, OUR MONEY is being spent on this.
If the OBAMA'S think this is a wise use of OUR MONEY, we should know ALL ABOUT IT.

This isn't about Malia

Submitted by Radical1979 on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 10:51pm.

This was about a president sending his 13 year old into a country the state department has warned Americans NOT to travel to. It's about the U.S. taxpayer paying for her flight and security, surely an enormous cost in hard times. This isn't a trip Malia would be taking if the Obama's had to pay for it.

It's about the White House having the ability to make a story disappear. Scares me no end.
