Attention Media: Walmart and Target Have Been Offering $9 Birth Control Since 2007

By Noel Sheppard | March 05, 2012 | 01:18

Noel Sheppard's picture

For over two months the Left and their media minions have been making a big stink about the need for mandatory health insurance coverage of contraceptives.

In all this fuss and distraction from the real problems this nation is facing, nobody noticed that since 2007 Walmart has been offering a month's worth of birth control pills for only $9 (emphasis added):

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Sept. 27, 2007 – Walmart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) today announced phase two of its $4 prescription program with changes that will help even more Americans deal with the high-cost of healthcare. The program – which has already saved Americans more than $610 million in its first year – has been expanded in two key ways:

More medicines covering more categories – Important prescription medicines have been added to the $4 program covering glaucoma, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), fungal infections and acne. Fertility and prescription birth control will also be included at $9, compared to national average prices ranging from $24 to $30 per month and saving women an estimated $15 to $21 per month – $180 to $250 annually.

Two days later, Target matched Walmart's offer.

The updated Retail Prescription Drug List for Walmart shows the following women's health medications (birth control bolded):

Women’s Health                                         $4, 30-day $10, 90-day
Estradiol 0.5mg tab . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . 30 . . . . . .90

Tri-Sprintec 28-day tab . . . . . .. . . . . . ....28 . . . . .N/A

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A 28-day supply of Sprintec and Tri-Sprintec are still available for $9. The other medications are mostly for menopause and other women's health issues.

Add it all up, and women can get birth control at Walmart for the cost of two lattes at Starbucks.

Yet for the past two months, the Left and their media minions have been making contraceptives out as so expensive that women can't possibly afford them if they're not included in their health insurance plans.

What's the next red herring the press are going to concoct to distract the public's attention from soaring gas prices, staggering budget deficits, stubbornly high unemployment, and another war looming in the Middle East?

*****Update: Target's online pharmacy also lists 28-day supplies of Sprintec and Tri-Sprintec are available for $9.

You’ve announced in front of Congress that you have a great deal of sex (although whether it is always with the same guy hasn’t been mentioned AFAIK).

Now that this announcement has been made, you will no doubt be propositioned by many men simply because you have announced that you have a great deal of sex and therefore they will believe you have no standards. You will also be whispered about behind your back by men and women for a very long time (remember what happened to Monica Lewinsky).

At some point in your life, you’ll have to decide whether it was worth it. Only you can make that determination.

Obama's version of State Islam or "submission"

Submitted by LaVallette on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 3:30am.

Islam means "submission". .

This issue is NOT about the cost of contraception but about the imposition of Obama's and the Demoncrats version of Fascist "Islam' i.e that all must submit to their "State" diktats. This is done by the nefarious campaign to undermine the moral authority of the Catholic Church by depicting its teaching as :"out of date", "hateful" and "against freedom of consience and action".( sarcastic aside: particularly in view of the large number battalions at the disposal of the Church and its Inquisition ready to be sent out to physically force people to abide by its precepts). It has already forced the Catholic Church out of its extensive and most efficient adoption services through the state insistance that the Church must include same sex couples in its service, regardless of its religious objections and its vision of what is in the best interest of the child. The current step is to force its "submission" to their diktats regarding "health services" and Obamacare or force them tp pull out. All this in preparation for the ultimate goal: forcing the Church to change its teaching on the gay lifestyle and to perform marriage in their chcuh for everybody especailly same sex marriagee, or face similar deprivation of the State license to conduct any marriage services.

Once they limit the Freedom of Religion what other purported Constitutional Freedom is secure when it all comes down to nit picking narrow defitnion of what the oridnary meaning of the "words" is?
The "practice of religion" has now been redefined and reduced simply to what you do for a couple of hours in church on Sunday, at the synagogue on the Shabbat and at the Mosque on Friday. The rest of the time your religion according to this new definition is irrelvant to your daily life, your standards and mode of behaviour. The state takes over and becomes your god!

Fluke's Testimony Is Fishy

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 3:34am.

Even if Walmart and Target did not offer $9 generic combination birth control pills that may be used in the treatment of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), let alone for the express use as birth control, or the $9 similar generic offered at Giant Eagle supermarket in my area as well, the fact is generic combination birth control pills have been offered for longer than since 2007.  Acceptable generics have been offered for around $25 that I know of for some time across the country.

Concerning Ms. Flukes testimony in front of the Democrat dog and pony show, Fluke prefaced her entire testimony with the fact that her PCOS suffering friend had covered access to prescribed birth control for her condition.  Fluke's testimony was hyperbole about a non-existent situation with her friend.  Birth control for PCOS was covered by her school health care insurance.

So what was Fluke up to?  Hypotheticals.  Hype.  Propaganda.  Fear-mongering.

Looking closer at Fluke's testimony, she said her friend was having night sweats and weight gain, possible symptoms of early menopause..  What she did not say was women ordinarily  have two ovaries and Fluke's friend only had one taken out.  Would only one ovary lead to early menopause.  Possibly.  Possibly not.  Fluke mentioned no further corroborating evidence, such as blood testing and the functional and structural status of the remaining ovary.  I think she left these facts ambiguous so as to hype her story more.  Also, the night sweats and weight gain can be due to other issues than early menopause, such as diabetes (which can be precipitated from long standing PCOS) or medication side effects.  For all I know, the woman could have been started on Lupron which causes a chemically induced menopause and require hormone replacement therapy.  Without the medical record it is impossible to conclude what is the etiology.  Certainly Fluke shed no light on the very evidence she portrayed as dire yet ambiguous.

Fluke said her friend could not afford the high cost ($100/month?) birth control pills.  As mentioned previously, and also the posting of DrSam in another thread, her medications could have been inexpensively procured at Planned Parenthood, compassionate care via pharmaceutical companies (paperwork filled out by her physician - why didn't the physician help more?  Or did the physician help more but it didn't fit Fluke's theme), or local/state/federal clinics all within easy distance from Georgetown University.  I find it hard to believe that all the activist professionals on the campus of Georgetown and no one lifted a finger for this woman, including the professional activist Fluke.  Maybe Fluke is confusing the treatment of hirsutism with the topical cream Vaniqa, which does cost a lot of money and may not be covered by insurance.  That would be a convenient conflation.

It sounds to me like those expensive birth control pills were the latest and greatest formulations like Yaz.  Some of these new(er) formulations do a nicer job with hirsutism of PCOS.  While this may represent part of optimal management of PCOS for some, the fact is any combination birth control pill with 30 mg of ethinyl estradiol plus any one of several progestins is useful in treating PCOS.  There are several inexpensive generics available that fit these parameters.  Older medication may not be cutting edge medicine but it's proven effective medicine with well known side effect profiles and benefits.

FYI - the birth control pills are used in PCOS for two or more reasons - to decrease the amount of free testosterone that cause hirsutism and other problems, return the patient to "normal" menses and hopefully improve fertility and chances for viable pregnancy, and to act as birth control IF certain other medications are used in the treatment of PCOS which can cause birth defects.

Lastly, I have worked at two different Catholic-based hospitals and their clinics.  There was no ban on prescribing hormonal therapy in the common packaged form of birth control pills for conditions such as PCOS, irregular menses, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis.  There was a prohibition on prescribing birth control pills for the birth control.  The patient was free to go to a number of other low or no cost clinics in town if they wanted to prevent pregnancy.

I started to write this post several days ago and got disgusted with the whole ordeal, I had researched local OBCP prices but did not call Target or Walmart. This thread motivated me to complete my post in the desire to help others understand some of the more complex issues left unexplained from a medical point of view. I felt Fluke's testimony was a little convenient and a field of gopher holes.

I agree that Fluke wants to fundamentally change our country like the statist in the Oval Office. I reject her premise and parts of her testimony.

I should have completed the post shortly after I read the PDF link of Fluke's testimony someone on the forum posted. The faster a more complete analysis of Fluke's testimony, from all contributors, the better we will be in refuting her words and others with similar ideological manipulations and disinformation.

We really are in a period of disinformation unlike anytime in my life. Where are the physicians, people who have sworn an oath to honesty and integrity in Medicine, in calling out the, at best, half-truths and hyperbolic emotings of Ms. Fluke? No doubt hanging out with the jackasses who went to the Wisconsin state capital protests and wrote out false sick notes for demonstrators. Medicine is being assaulted by the Left and physician's sit back and let it happen. Some are willingly participating in their own demise. Frightening.

I agree with both of you.  It amazed me, as I bashed libs all night last night, how uninformed people really are on important issues. They focus on "celebrity" and "infamy" rather than substance. What is frightening is that until the truth hits people in the head like a clue bat, they have no idea of what is happening and unable to connect the dots.

As long as it doesnt affect them, no problem, but when the walls come tumbling down, it will be too late. And they will take me down and my country down, with them.

Maybe at the Georgetown University clinic the patient went to, though HIPAA regulations and an oath to patient privacy should keep them quiet. I think most uninvolved physicians won't speak up because they have no intimate knowledge of the specific case and may not want any undesirable publicity from being identified.

Where are those highly paid physician correspondents for Network TV and print media on this issue. Any of them talking to the public from their gilded (gelded?) perch?

We'll see if governing medical entities and magazine editorial pages have any discussion of this mess. I expect either support for the "brave" Ms. Fluke or a soft shoe dance.

I put nothing past this neo-dictatorial Administration when it comes to threats and carrying out strong-arm tactics against American citizens. Iran and Hamas - not so much, but Americans - yes. (sarcasm/off)

I am now going to do honor to my friend stratman.

Submitted by The Vet on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 6:38am.

1. Mr. stratman has addressed the liberal argument that religious institutions are denying women treatment with COCP (combined oral contraceptive pill  AKA the pill) so we should sign on with HHS forcing everyone including religious institutions to cover COCP.

2. As Mr. stratman shows, religious institutions have done and do now prescribe COCP for treatment of issues not related to birth control. So the liberal argument is a red herring.

3. But let's give the liberal argument it's day in court. Let's say there is one religious institution out there that uncaringly will not prescribe or let it's insurance cover COCP for hormonal issues, diseases, or cancer. Just one.

    a. The ACA (Obamacare) required all  “group health plans” and “health insurance issuers" to provide—at no cost to the employee—certain “preventive services” for women. ACA itself does not specify which preventive services must be covered, but deferred that decision to the Health Resources and Services Administration (“HRSA”), an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”).

   b. The HHS under the direction of Department Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, issued an Interim Final Rule (“HHS mandate”), stating that, beginning in August, 2012, employer-provided health care plans must cover all “preventive services” listed in HRSA’s guidelines, without charging a co-payment, co-insurance, or deductible.

   c. A list of everything required in the HHS mandate can be found here.

4. Any religious institution that did not prescribe COCP for any female hormonal issues, diseases, or cancer IS NOT REQUIRED TO PRESCRIBE IT UNDER THE HHS MANDATE.

Let's repeat that as it is important.

If a religious institution did not cover COCP for women's health issues other than birth control before the HHS mandate, IT STILL DOES NOT HAVE TO COVER IT UNDER THE BANNER OF THE HHS MANDATE. It will however have cover to all contraceptive methods. But NOT as a treatment for health issues.

So the whole idea that this is a women's health issue IS AN OUT AND OUT LIE.

Thanks, The Vet

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 03/06/2012 - 3:52pm.

Thank you, not only for the compliment but for the more important gift of knowledge. I was unaware of the stipulations for religious institution exclusions. The situation is more incredulous than I thought.

** Group health plans sponsored by certain religious employers, and group health insurance coverage in connection with such plans, are exempt from the requirement to cover contraceptive services. A religious employer is one that: (1) has the inculcation of religious values as its purpose; (2) primarily employs persons who share its religious tenets; (3) primarily serves persons who share its religious tenets; and (4) is a non-profit organization under Internal Revenue Code section 6033(a)(1) and section 6033(a)(3)(A)(i) or (iii). 45 C.F.R. §147.130(a)(1)(iv)(B). See the Federal Register Notice: Group Health Plans and Health
Insurance Issuers Relating to Coverage of Preventive Services Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PDF - 201 KB)

The definition of a "religious employer" are designed to dismiss the vast majority of religious institutions outside of a place of worship.  No religious-owned hospital, and few universities like Georgetown or my alma mater, will be able to pass muster on #'s 1, 2, or 3, especially #3 since purity tests are not required before the religious institution serves people in need or matriculates students.

This is an aggressive naked attempt by the unscrupulous Left to squeeze religious institutions out of the public service.  I am sure the Obama thugs have already contemplated how they will spin, for example, a church that might enquire into religious beliefs as a requirement of employment, matriculation or assistance, let alone refusal of care or employment because a required quota of non-aligned believers have already been hired or helped in some yet to be determined timeframe.  Additionally, I don't see why the profit status of a business makes any damn bit of difference when it comes to First Amendment rights of an employer to not facilitate abortions due to their religious beliefs.

This truly is a disgrace and an outrage to have this blatant attack on religious freedoms, particularly by the US Government.

Liberal lying media cannot have hours of dead air (crickets) so they had to find a replacement for real news. Real news has not helped Boy Barry. Since all news outlets have shut down on all important issues since last week, Obie Ones approval rating has gone up 2 pts.

Check out a few of the lib web sites. They all have the same stories and use the same line of thought. It is too coordinated to me and looks like the useful idiots are full blown comrades. Frightening that it appears to be working. As a senior and a proud American, I find it such a disappointment that the majority of Americans are just plain stupid or so self absorbed they cannot see their world crumbling around them.

The only thing is, if gas prices stay this high, I really don't think obama can hide.

My husband was talking about how it costs $60 now to fill up his truck. Come November, I don't think to many people will really care if Fluke is having sex or not. Were they able to go on vacation over the summer, or did they have to stay home because of gas prices? How much of their money is now going to pay for gas? Are they having to help their parents pay for their medicines now that medicare was cut while paying health insurance or their adult children who can't find full time work?

I don't care what they say about the economy, it's bad. Very bad. That is what people will be voting on.

I don't give a flying Fluck about that kook Fluke right now - and it costs me $100 to fill up my 2001 Toyota Tundra over here in Asia!! We haven't seen gas under $3 since Boy Barry ascended to the throne............and that's the low end!!! But since Iive here in Asia - and especially the People's Republic of Hawaii - I sometimes wonder how out of touch with 'reality' I really am, as it relates to 'real' Americans.............so I get a lot of expansive knowledge by reading NB with all of the various types of people that are on here.

Oh, and Boy Barry doesn't really have to 'hide' - because he's got the StateRun Media 'getting his sorry ass' every day!!! And I think that there IS a large part of the populace that still believes in MSM soundbites and headlines, unfortunatly.

No you're not out of touch. You're prices are probably a bit higher than on the mainland though. And things will get worse for you. My daughter is doing a semester abroad in the fall and we priced airline tickets to visit her in the fall. They've doubled from three years ago when my husband visited Poland. Those fees are going to hit your tourism hard as people stop traveling.

Those are the things people will be voting on in November. If the GOP is smart they will play over and over Chu's comment about not caring about gas prices, and Obama's comments about high energy costs.

Of course, no one ever accused the GOP of being smart.

Some other thoughts...

Submitted by Unsane on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 10:04pm.

Don't leave out (though I'm sure you haven't) how high transportation costs caused by increasing gas prices effects everything else.  I can't help but notice how high some of the produce items have gotten.  As many of the produce items I consume are transported by some distance (say, from places like CA and Guatemala, and from there into the grocery store's own distribution system), the piper has to be paid somehow...

Something else has been causing the rise in gas prices: the Shahinshah's debasing of the currency via reckless fiscal policies.  And the Fed possibly wants MORE "easing"?

To tweak a quote from Daniel Hannan, MEP, with any luck, voters will see what many others have seen: that His Majesty The Shahinshah is the devalued President of a devalued country.

This is an interesting read:

During 2011 the price increase on specific food items well outpaced the 2.9% overall inflation the government is touting. The price of coffee rose 31%, a hamburger 23%, peanut butter 22%, flour 16%, bread 10%, and so on. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Food Price Index is up over 100% in the last 8 years.

2.9% inflation? More like 8 or 9% in reality. Just like the fictitious unemployment rate.

I do numbers. I used to do accounting, so I'm quite good at it, too. I can look at a dataset, and intuitively find the answer I'm looking for before I begin to analyze them. And we in the number business have a saying...."lies, damn lies, and statistics". That's all one needs to know.

You are distorting the truth, again. The incident regarding a soldier desecrating a Koran was disrespectful and deserved an apology.

This recent incident was very different. The agreed upon rules, approved by Afghan officials and the US, at the prison, require the destruction of any objects used to send illicit information or coded messages to the prisoners. Obviously for reasons of security. It was not an "accident" nor "disrespectful" to have destroyed the korans where coded messages were found. What was a problem was the carelessness in the process of destruction. Since policy was followed, prior agreements by officials, this incident did not require any apology.

Two very different incidents. One caused no furor because it was handled quickly and with forthright leadership. This latest incident has gone awry because of hypocricy and poor leadership.

I read this article with wonderment. What is the issue about price of contraception? The ONLY issue is that the tyrannical Obama administration is insisting that the rights of an employer related to religious beliefs are being compromised.

It is stupid articles like this that trash our liberty. Rather than continuing to press the right to freedom of religion, stupid people continue to play the game of "contraception". Santorum had several opportunities to chide Chris Wallace on this yesterday, but he sat there and played rope-a-dope with him.

Speaking of religious freedom, where are the people who are affronted that "the religion of peace" has imposed a death sentence on a Christian for converting from Islam? THAT should be a lot higher on the list than some stupid research on what contraceptives cost!

Those plans at Walmart, Target etc. that offer very reasonable rates for contraception, simply won't do for any of the "Flukes" out there-- because they are NOT GOVERNMENT-MANDATED ones. To them, they are "1%-er produced" plans that can be just as easily taken away-- thus, they want the GOVERNMENT to guarantee them, as well as healthcare in general, FOREVER.

strat, the point isn't that generics have been available for 25 years, it's that with birth control as cheap as $9, no woman should be claiming that

a) it costs thousands of dollars over the course of law school

or

b) she can't afford it.

I have taken Prilosec for years for GERD.  When it went "over the counter," guess what?  My insurance company stopped paying for it from the pharmacy, and I had to buy it myself, without a prescription.

Jeez, don't I have a right to be reflux-free?  Why should I have to pay full-price???? I guess I should have filed suit to make the insurance company give it to me for free!

Now there is generic Prilosec that saves a bit. I can't wait for Nexium to go OTC. But until then, I still rely on what I can get for myself.

I lived under gubmint health care for 22 years of active duty. Things I learned during that time:

1. I was never going to see the same doctor twice in a row.

2. Unless I was at death's door or had a major artery bleeding, I was going to get Tylenol and Sudafed and then be sent back to work. So to save time, I just kept the eds I wanted in my locker. The only thing most young people need for illness is rest, and like most I didn't.

3. Don't let medical terms go by without asking what they mean. Knowing I'd never see the same Doc again I made them explain stuff to me.

If health care was like it was when I was young, people wouldn't even go to a doctor unless it was something really serious. Doctor visits were not unreasonably priced, but weren't "free" either and made us think about whether it was really warranted.

Dad had Blue Cross and it was for surgery or hospital stays. Period.

I like your thinking, it mirrors my own.

To wit: I recently had to visit a doc in an emergency room.  I paid for my visit up front, and as I did, the hospital chopped the bill by 65%.

In a perfect world, we'd all have insurance we buy as easily and readily as we do auto insurance, and medical insurance would be paid for much the same way (meaning insurers charge based on risk factors computed umpteen different ways).  And the only thing the insurance would be used for would be for circumstances as your father outlined.  Other than that: cash for everything else.

We are not on different wavelengths on the basics but we have different historical and functional views on the situation.

There are not Walmarts and Targets everywhere. Even if there are these stores in your area, you may not think to fill your prescriptions there. In a post I just made above, I didn't think of contacting these stores. But there have been inexpensive generics available via most any pharmacy, even if it takes a couple days to get the medicine you want shipped if it's not in stock. I think that makes a larger point and one that has been in existence since before 2007 when the $9 policy quoted in the article began.

So, yes, inexpensive generics are and have been available that cost much less than what Fluke declared, and these medications are suitable in the management of PCOS and pregnancy. There are also other clinics and institutions that will supply low or no cost OBCP which do not require a Target or Walmart.

Speaking of Omeprazole (Prilosec), besides certain occasional sale promotions at Costco's Kikland brand, I have found the best price to be at CVS with their house brand when they have their internet/email 40% off all house brand pharmacy plus free shipping. The sale occurs several times a year.

I'm sure some do, I'm not sure about "most" or "all". I would also say it would depend on what would be needed in the exam - pelvic, Pap, etc. And the coverage would also be based on what premium the person wants to pay, wherein a higher premium will cover more... but either way, you're still paying more than just $9 at Walmart.

I live near the People's Republic of Blacksburg, Va. It's home to Virginia Tech. Their city council refuses to let a WalMart, under the guise of "no store with more floor area than XX sq. ft." They have made bumper stickers that read, "Shop Local, Buy Local. No Box Stores."

Next door to them is Christiansburg, Va. which has enjoyed the tax revenues of the mall and several box stores. Tech of course gets money from the state and feds, along with their ballooning tuition prices.

I enjoy seeing the Blacksburg "Buy Local" bumper stickers as I walk through the box store parking lots. I'm sure they see no contradiction.

If it wasn't associated with the employer this would not be an issue. Just pick the coverage options when you want on your own policy. If you quit or get fired you take the insurance with you. This mess we have out there now with or without Obamacare is not workingl. Your employer should not be picking your insurance and coverage.

I'm tired of this calculated manufactured outrage of the left

This is what happens when you play defense, you end up apologizing for poorly chosen words. What's worse Noel is these people have already moved on and here we are still poking holes in what we reflexively knew to be a series of false assertions in the first place. Apparently, we still need to relearn the lesson of the 2008 VP debates when Biden serially lied leaving Palin almost speechless at the breathtaking brazenness of someone who thinks the public is too stupid to fact check before reflexively giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Instead of playing the inevitable defense which libs have counted on via their bombast of false assertions, why not respond differently? What did Einstein say about doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result? It's time to stop the insanity of responding to every false assertion with a fusillade of facts. Just respond to the canned false assertions with an equally canned assertion of "THAT'S NONSENSE" Remember it's moral equivalence when it comes to he said, she said. Quote me, "A liberal assertion is nothing more than a falsehood waiting to be exposed."

Go on the offense, recount every failure of the Obama Regime and let the libs play defense and spin, spin, spin.

Andrew Breitbart for the Offense

Submitted by dscott on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 4:21pm.

"Among the many things that made Andrew Breitbart a great man was that he played offense. Most of the time warriors for freedom find themselves playing defense. Instead, we should follow Breitbart's example.

So many, many times I have been speaking at anti-jihad events and heard other speakers saying, "We are not racists, we are not bigots, we are not Islamophobes..." This is an understandable impulse: to counter the leftist/Islamic supremacist charges that smear and defame decent people who are trying to defend their freedoms and way of life. But at the same, it is playing on their field, allowing the foes of freedom to set the terms of the debate. Breitbart never did that.

We have allowed the jihadists and Islamic supremacists, and their leftist allies, to put us on the defensive. We're always apologizing, tacitly accepting their narrative and responding to them in the parameters they set up. "

Submitted by LinTaylor on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 1:51pm.

I worked at a Kroger pharmacy for three years, and one thing we did do was sell Plan B (the infamous Morning After Pill) without a prescription. However, the customer needed proof of age, and individual staff members could sign a form that would let them opt out of selling it if they had personal or religious objections to doing so. I may not have a lot of good things to say about Kroger, but I was always glad that they were at least willing to recognize that individuals might have a problem with certain forms of contraception.
