Heilemann Falsely Claims GOP Becoming 'Whiter,' 'More Blue Collar' and 'Less Well-Educated'

By Noel Sheppard | March 03, 2012 | 12:51

On HBO's Real Time Friday, New York magazine's John Heilemann trotted out the same old tired and completely false cliches about the GOP that Americans are going to hear ad nauseum for the next eight months.

"The Republican Party is becoming just truly is becoming a whiter, more blue collar, more populist, less well-educated party" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Yeah, and look, I mean, I think it's an amazing thing in the sense that, you know, James and I were talking about this before. The Republican Party is becoming just truly is becoming a whiter, more blue collar, more populist, less well-educated party, and more and more a religious party. And they cater to that base and just in a systematic way are making it impossible for them to win national elections. They are, you know, driving first Hispanics out of the party. They're driving women increasingly out of the party. And they find these places where they think they can get narrow advantage and then they go too far. And this is one of the instances that I think is, there's a logic to it, but it’s a faulty logic.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Do facts actually bear this out?

Let's start with gender, as the recent media meme is that Republicans are driving women away.

In 2008, according to exit polls, 56 percent of women voted for Obama, and 43 percent went for McCain.

Yet two years later in the 2010 midterm elections, 49 percent of women voted for a Republican in the House versus 48 percent for a Democrat. As such, contrary to Heilemann's view, Republicans gained female support in 2010.

As for "becoming whiter," four percent of African-Americans, 31 percent of Latinos, and 35 percent of Asians voted for McCain in 2008. In 2010, these numbers jumped to nine percent, 38 percent, and 40 percent for House Republicans respectively. As such, contrary to Heilemann's view, Republicans gained minority support in 2010.

As for "more blue collar," McCain got 49 percent of folks making $50k or more and 49 percent of people making $100k or more. In 2010, House Republicans got 55 percent and 58 percent respectively. As such, contrary to Heilemann's view, Republicans became less blue collar in 2010.

Finally, as for education, let's be clear: in 2010 much as in 2008, the overwhelming percentage of folks without high school diplomas went Democrat. In 2008, 63 percent of high school dropouts voted for Obama. This number was 57 percent for House Democrats in 2010.

No matter how folks like Heilemann want to spin it, the least educated in this country virtually always vote for Democrats. Period!

As for the most-educated - meaning post-graduate degrees - Republicans improved on this number in 2010 garnering 45 percent of their vote versus McCain's 40 percent.

Across every other education level, Republicans improved their numbers from 2008 getting 52 percent of high school graduates, 53 percent of folks with some college, and 58 percent of college graduates.

Add it all up, and Heilemann was wrong on all counts. Yet this man is a revered contributor to MSNBC.

Tells you a lot about that farce of a so-called "news" network, doesn't it?

Whup, there it is!

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 1:46pm.

So, the GOP is the party of the average American, the lower class, church attending, blue collar worker while the Democrats have become the party of the Social Elite, the upper class, college educated, white collar "1 percenters." Nice of them to finally admit it!

By the way, liberals, it must surely get your panties in a twist to realize that it's the "minority" who are, by far and lager, the most religious people. For example: If the GOP is the Party of the Pope, as the liberals love to assert, then just about every Latino in the world will support them! There's not too many atheist Latinos, you know. The VAST majority of them are devout Catholics (which is why you'll rarely see a Latino on the news complaining about how the Pope, or religion in general, is "interfering" with politics. THEY support the Pope AND the freedom of religious expression, especially in politics!)! By attacking Catholicism, YOU just lost an entire ethnic demographic! That, alone, will be enough for you to lose the Presidential election. HA HA! Ain't Karma a bitch?

Think about it, Liberals. These are the people who are so devout in their religion that even their imprisoned criminals keep shrines to the Virgin Mary in their cells! Is this REALLY the kind of people you can realistically claim to represent when you scream, at the top of your lungs: There MUST be a Separation of Church and State?" That there's "no room" for religion in politcs? Come on, you can't actually be that stupid! Or can you?

Less Educated and Blue Collar do not mean stupid

Submitted by TSM on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 4:58pm.

I am so tired of the media and pundits confusing "less educated,' and "blue collar" with stupidity. I know a lot of blue collar people that are very well-read, informed, and have a ton of street smarts and common sense. Not to mention that many blue collar jobs require a higher education...just not an acedemic education. On the flip side...I know a lot of "educated idiots." Certainly, learning a trade, or a college education are important to financially succeed in this country, it just doesn't guarantee making a person "smart."

And what do liberals consider

Submitted by Slyrr on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 5:18pm.

And what do liberals consider 'diverse, white collar, and intelligent'?

'Diversity':
A black president who is dangerously inexperienced, incompetent and lawless.
An angry black woman establishing a 'Nutrition Gestapo' that terrorizes school children by ransacking their lunchboxes and throwing away their food.
A latino Supreme court justice who says she 'knows better than whites'.

'White Collar':
Putting tax cheats in charge of the treasury.
Putting gun-running racists in control of the Justice Department.
Putting know-nothing hacks in control of conquered companies, running them into the ground, then blaming the media.
Putting moon-pie lunatics in charge of their 'green jobs' fiefdom.
Putting Wong-Fong-Schlong in charge of the energy department and letting him say he's 'glad that gas prices are high'.

'Intelligence':
Saying that 0-1=2. (Nancy Pelosi and her blatherscite about how spending unemployment money increases revenue)
Obama saying that -3 Trillion MINUS 20 Trillion = out of debt.
57 states.
Navy 'Corpse-men'.
Telling police that they're 'stupid' then trying to smooth it over with booze.
Telling young women it's OK to screw around recklessly, then saying abortions are good for 'women's health'.
Eagerly making deals with known enemies and backstabbers, only to later feign astonishment when the backstabbers inevitably break the deal.
Saying Obama's election would 'end racism'.
Saying Obama's election would 'keep unemployment below 8%'.
Saying Obama's election would lower the levels of the sea.
Saying 'we have to pass our laws before we can find out what's in them'.
Trying to 'deem' their agenda into law.
Giving deadly weapons to Mexican drug lords, just to try and wreck the 2nd Amendment.
Cutting health aid to the Army.
Cutting funding for the army in the middle of global upheaval and chaos.
Cutting our nuclear arsenal in the middle of global upheaval and chaos.
Refusing to produce domestic energy in the middle of global upheaval and chaos.
Refusing to produce food in the middle of global upheaval and chaos.

I could go on and on and ON. If THIS is what the liberal left considers to be 'diversity, white collar and intelligent', then they can KEEP it. Looks like the white, blue collar dopes are the smart ones.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

when their car breaks down do they call a PhD?

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 5:48pm.

The 'educated' seem to confuse the amount of years or dollars spent in an educational institution as proof of superior intelligence. However what a highly 'educated' person has attained is a lot of knowledge in a narrow subject area and outside of that subject area (because their education has been so focused) they are almost helpless.

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 03/04/2012 - 10:51am.

If your car breaks down, does your mechanic need to consult three or four "specialists" in order to fix it? You know, like a doctor needs to, say, treat your brain tumor? Your highly educated doctor, after spending six years learning his trade in a university, and several more years as an intern in a hospital, along with several years experience in private practice, will inevitably feel the need to "consult" a neurologist, an oncologist, a surgeon, an anesthesiologist, five or more nurses, ect. So, just how "smart" is he, really?
