Rich Lowry Schools Eleanor Clift: This Is a 'Flat Out Tax and Spend Big Government Liberal Budget'

Newsweek's Eleanor Clift on PBS's McLaughlin Group Friday voiced predictable praise for President Obama's just released budget claiming you can't "drastically cut a deficit before you invigorate the economy or you’re going to look at a lost decade."

National Review's Rich Lowry quickly refuted this nonsense telling his progressive co-panelist, "This isn’t a Keynesian budget. It’s a flat out tax and spend big government liberal budget” (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

When Clift got her chance to speak on this issue, she said, "This is a budget that is not going to pass because the Republicans wouldn’t pass anything he proposes anyway. It is a setting out of a particular vision, and that vision is that you can’t drastically cut a deficit before you invigorate the economy or you’re going to look at a lost decade."

She continued, "So he has his priorities right. He brings the deficit down over the long term and he puts a critical investment [in place?].

At that point, Lowry injected some much-needed sanity into the discussion saying, “A classic Keynesian believes you spend in a recession and then you cut when times are better. This is ten years when growth is assumed to be pretty healthy, but spending at the end of it will be at 23 percent of GDP."

He correctly concluded, "This isn’t a Keynesian budget. It’s a flat out tax and spend big government liberal budget.”

Clift replied, “That’s flat out Republican rhetoric.”

Is it?

Here's the relevant chart from Obama's budget proposal:

Not surprisingly, Lowry was quite correct about assumptions of healthy economic growth.

The Administration predicts the Gross Domestic Product will rise 4.2 percent in 2012, 4.7 percent in 2013, 5.0 percent in 2014, 6.0 percent in 2015, and 6.0 percent in 2016.

Despite the economy supposedly booming, spending continues to increase each and every year rising a staggering 62 percent by 2022 while adding $10.5 trillion to the national debt.

As such, suggesting this is Keynesian is a slight to Keynesians the world over.

Nice job calling her on it, Rich! Bravo!

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

Even Keynes would have advocated a cut in spending once the economy had recovered.

Besides which, the CBO disagrees

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sat, 02/18/2012 - 8:08pm.

Even the guys who gave the rosy projection to Obamacare (the CBO)  disagree. They see Obama deficits at the current rate all the way out to 2020.  They also base this on spending actually declining to 20% of GDP by then (STILL above the historic 18% of GDP).  And they both assume good growth with the looming tax increase in 2013.

The outcome is that Obama is trying to cook the books again, and even the CBO head (also a Democrat) thinks that he is wrong.  Obama's history of getting it right is also screwed up.

But the fortunate side is that MAYBE Boehner can find some onions and not let this kind of spending increases happen.  Obama has a budget that is baselined roughly $1T above Bush's 2006 budget.  We cannot do this kind of domestic spending and save money in the future.

Liberal Media Hacks look beaten, aged

Submitted by ChrisNH on Sat, 02/18/2012 - 9:37pm.

It is quite amusing to watch Lib Media Hacks age before our eyes. Clift, Matthews, et al...they all look so beaten, so bludgeoned. These past four years have proudly shown Lib Media Hacks to be as much of a failure as the big-eared cigarette smoker they carried into the White House upon a purple, limp-wristed throne. His failure is their failure.

I made a comment earlier about how ugly liberal women are, let me add Clift to that list. Does this ignorant woman ever shut up?

Stupid

Submitted by fatboy on Sun, 02/19/2012 - 11:11am.

Her argument is nonsense. Liberals will never cut spending because the taxes they impose will themselves never be cut. With business booming, income tax dollars flow in. This, along w/ additional higher taxes, means there's simply too much money lying around...so it must be spent.

While Keynes may have supported a reduction in spending w/ improvements in the economy, the one thing he forgot is the liberal penchant for unbridled taxation and spending.

Shhh, Don't Tell Eleanor Just Yet

Submitted by HardRightTurn on Sun, 02/19/2012 - 12:17pm.

This decade is already lost. The impact of Obama's failed policies will be felt for generations. Just like Carter's housing for the poor initiative is just now crushing the economy. That cancer took nearly thirty years to metastasize. Obamcare will bring America to her knees, turn the whole country into a ghetto.
