Gingrich Tells NBC's Gregory 'You Just Managed to Precisely Repeat the Obama Administration's Line'

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, appearing on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday, told host David Gregory, "You just managed to precisely repeat the Obama administration's line."

The subject being discussed was the new edict from the Department of Health and Human Services requiring religious organizations to provide contraception to their employees (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary):

NEWT GINGRICH: Furthermore, you know, he's--he has declared what--it's not just an economic election, you know, he's basically declared war on the Catholic Church, and that's the language of Archbishop Dolan of New York. And I think you're going to see a very severe reaction to the idea of a radical Obama administration...

DAVID GREGORY, HOST: Well, let's--explain what you're talking about.

GINGRICH: ...imposing secular rules on religion.

GREGORY: This is for insurance to be provided, including contraception, for employees around the country.

GINGRICH: Right.

GREGORY: And--but religious institutions would be exempted. How is this a war against religion...

GINGRICH: No.

GREGORY: Well, religious institutions, churches and the like, would be exempted, and there are states that have very similar rules to ensure the health and safety of, of women that they get covered in their workplace, whether it be a Catholic hospital or other kind of institution.

GINGRICH: Well, I mean, you, you just managed to precisely repeat the Obama administration's line, which is also the American Civil Liberties Union line. The fact is what you're saying is there cannot be a genuinely Catholic university, there cannot be a genuinely Catholic hospital, that in fact it will have to be subordinated to the rules of a secular government. I mean, I happen to oppose rules that, that have, for example, forced Catholic Adoption Services to be closed because they're only willing to have adoptions for marriages between a man and a woman. There are states that now close that. I think that is a tremendous infringement of religious liberty. And I think you're saying the same thing. You're saying basically, "Oh, you can have the name on it, but you can't actually be a Catholic institution. You can't actually be an evangelical Christian institution. You can't actually be an orthodox Jewish institution because we the secular government are going to impose on you." I think that's--I think this is a very profound moment for Americans to decide...

GREGORY: And you predict a political cost for the president.

GINGRICH: ...do you really want to have a government impose on them?

GREGORY: Do you predict a political cost for the president because of this?

GINGRICH: What? Very substantial, yes. Because, because every American who cares about religious liberty, and I've been talking, for example, with evangelicals here in Nevada, every American who cares about religious liberty recognizes that from, from, from judges who say you, you can't say a prayer in high school, you can't--the New York City decision recently--you, you can't rent an empty school building on Sunday morning--every time you turn around, secular government is closing in on and shrinking the right of religious liberty in America, and I think there are millions of people who are very disturbed by it.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

How utterly typical of Gregory

Here's a scathing piece from the other side of the pond on Obama's "war on religion".

We are in very, very dangerous territory here.  And if people don't realize it, we are well and truly sunk, President Schettino has run this ship of state up on the rocks, where there is no turning it around.

Not quite the right analogy

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 2:30pm.

I consider the parallel to Obama to be Robert Mugabe, who wrecked the South African economy and turned it from a food exporter to an importer, who caused 1000%/year inflation, and who has generally turned that country into a worker's "paradise" where everyone is poor, as the rich have fled.

This is the Obama goal. Give him four more years and it will be permanent. We probably will even wind up with stooges like the Governor of NC (Bev Perdue) who think we should "suspend elections" so that Congress can do the work of the Washington insider instead of the people's bidding.

Zimbabwe

Submitted by Ogundipe S.O. on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 4:16pm.

You're trying to ref Zimbabwe where Robert Mugabe drove away all white farmers and investors. Your yearly inflation peg of 1000% is the most generous. Last time I checked a half kilo of baked bread sold for Z$2.5 Trillion. The currency is so worthless to the extent that no one accept it anymore, teachers now collects about 2 gallons of PMS in place of cash salary, even the president paid for his Rolls Royce in American Dollars. Kwara State is the most agriculturally productive state in my country, Nigeria. The former governor brought in some of the deported white farmers from Zimbabwe. South Africa was and is still the best and largest economy in Africa.

Newt the Attack Dog

Submitted by tiger20 on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 1:49pm.

If or when Mitt Romney wins the Republican nomination he must do all he can to mend fences with Newt and turn him loose on the media to challenge their Obama and Democratic advocay at every turn, whether it be from outright opinion editorials to the liberal talking points framework of their questions, the judicious use of the straw man and their advocacy of liberal positions couched as probing journalism.

I would like to see Newt Gingrich replace Reince Priebus

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 2:25pm.

The real problem we have right now is that Reince Priebus is still not willing to go out and tell how Republicans are different than Democrats. For all of her stupidity, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is a vocal example of a spokesperson, as was Howard Dean. Reince is not a good spokesperson. Steele wasn't bad, but he was definitely not conservative enough. Newt MIGHT be able to speak the conservative line if he were the Chairman. Or he might be suborned by the monied establishment. But either way, he will take the fight to the Dems rather than letting liars like Wasserman-Schultz, Biden, and of course the newly found conservative Obama rule the day.

Is this not a prime example of the "Wall of seperation" between church and state was meant for? But to the satanic liberal left, it is only a one way wall meant to keep religion in and not to keep government out.

Spot on ... Snug! The recent Supreme Court ruling regarding employment by churches should have been enough to help BO, the Marxist-dicktator, understand that the tide is turning on the government and it's Marxist-media bootlickers' attacks on religious freedom. But I guess another round of court cases will be required before BO and the boot-lickers begin to understand that the road runs both ways and the Dicktator can't trample the Constitution in the arena of religion anymore!

He's right, except this goes

Submitted by redfish on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 2:27pm.

He's right, except this goes beyond imposing secular rules on religious institutions.

Organizations shouldn't be forced to provide contraception or do abortion, whether they're religious or not.

The same-sex marriage issue isn't even about gay people. The rules make it so that if an adoption agency prefers prioritizing man-woman couples for adoption, they're considered discriminatory. The same-sex couple doesn't have to be gay. It can be two straight blokes who decided they want to raise a baby. Its so *bizarre* that to be politically correct today, we can't have adoption agencies prioritize couples who are infertile and can't have a baby. The fact that sexuality is brought into this is just a sign of how distorted the issue of marriage has become.. marriage was never about sexuality, it was about children.

Submitted by KyWriter on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 2:59pm.

...but Mitt needs to learn at least one thing from him: this campaign will be a bitter, two-front war for the Republicans. Newt realized from the beginning that the media will be hostile to anything threatening the investment they have made in the current President, and no amount of sucking up to it will change anything. McCain thought he could play along with the media and was stabbed constantly in the back. He still hasn't learned how treacherous it was and continues to be. Mitt needs to learn it now, otherwise this will just be a replay of the last race with the same results.

Does one comment about Obama's misprision,or poor record, wipe out one ass kissing session; neutralize several smarmy shots at Republicans or conservatives; or is it the usual liberal math - one comment that is either less than complimentary or completely neutral regarding Obama is incontrovertible proof that a lib talking head like Gregory never evinces favoritism or partisanship?

The radical liberals have been heading down this path since the 1930's using government regulation to override the constitution and the Bill of Rights. The goal that the current government which ever party) will be able to control all aspects of American life.
