Fareed Zakaria Defends Romney From Media Taking 'Very Poor' Remark 'Entirely Out of Context'

By Noel Sheppard | February 05, 2012 | 12:19

A rather extraordinary thing happened on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS Sunday.

The host actually defended Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney from the media's proclivity to take his statements "entirely out of context" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

FAREED ZAKARIA: What I noticed though, we talk about the gaffes in the debates and the campaign. The one gaffe, Romney has this new gaffe of, you know, the comment about the poor. I feel as though in some ways the guy can’t get a break because if you look at the previous gaffe where he talked about “I like to fire people,” he wasn’t talking about firing people. He was talking about firing insurance companies, and that’s absolutely clear.

And here he says, “I’m not so concerned about the poor, they have a safety net, if it has holes I’ll repair it.” I feel as though the media here have sort of said, “Yes, yes, but if we take this entirely out of context, it really sounds like he’s being very mean to the poor.” It just feels like, “Yeah, but you just took it entirely out of context.”

Interesting observation considering the anchor in the middle of this firestorm, CNN's Soledad O'Brien, received congratulations for her interview from two different CNN contributors on the air with one actually giving her a high five.

While Zakaria was pointing out the hypocrisy here, he might have scolded folks on his own network for their part in not only taking Romney "entirely out of context," but also spreading the misinformation as far as they possibly could.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

You know Faheed, Obama is set

Submitted by ricklail on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 12:22pm.

You know Faheed, Obama is set to use this in his campaign, context or not. Debbie Shultz of the Wasserman crime family has said so.

Out of context...

Submitted by rubberneck on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 12:33pm.

Yes, responsible journalists are speaking out against it. Reliable Sources also stated that it was utter BS. This is what happens though, when the MMS is also working for Obama. I remember, when Romney came out with a commercial with Obama say Americans were lazy. The press blew up like a nuclear bomb, cause it was clearly out of context as well.

If the press and Obama people are going to do this, then Romney and the RNC has to sift through every word Obama has said, and return the favor.

CBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN refuse

Submitted by ricklail on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 1:21pm.

CBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN refuse to report anything that might be damaging to Obama or the Commiecrats. (CBS did do some reporting on Fast and Furious early.) MSNBC does not only not report they also make things up. I am referring in this instance to the BS report that Cuimming and the Commiecrats put out on Fast and Furious. It is a humped back lie but they have put it out as factual. I am sure that we can find a lot of instances like this coming from the Unrecverned Al.

Oh Come On Folks!

Submitted by JustAl on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 1:27pm.

Has everyone already forgotten how nice the media was to McShame, right up until he got the nomination officially? The media is propping up ORomneama because he is a sure bet to be beaten by their man, he has practically the same policy positions except the only media in his pocket are Drudge and Coulter. Even if, by some stretch, he beat Obama, the media still gets a liberal in the white house. The GOP is well on it's way to nominating the ONE candidate who actually does make Obama the lessor of the two evils. . . unbelievable.

if you think Obama is the lesser of two evils, you just haven't been paying attention.

from your tone I'd bet you're an Iran Paul fan, but it really doesn't matter. you've got to get with the program, son! this country can't survive another 4 years of Obama, and Romney will be nominee. it's pretty simple.

No Thanks

Submitted by JustAl on Sun, 02/05/2012 - 3:27pm.

I pay a lot of attention thanks. That's why I know that if Romney is elected the GOP will continue to slide left trying to catch the dems. If you continue to reward bad behavior, that's all you'll ever get. If we get four more of "O" then maybe, just maybe, the GOP (and others I see) will pull their collective heads out and give us an alternative.

"Iran Paul" now that's funny! So what will Mittens do to prevent Iranian nukes? (insert the sound of the cyber crickets).

I won't be so pretentious as to accuse you of "not paying attention". Maybe you do have some skin in the game of being the world's "rent a cop", my son and my brother's son are nearing completion of their second combat tour each, that makes a total of seven for our family counting my other nephew. Let me know how "gung ho" you are to police the world when you're told your son's vehicle's been hit by an IED and your waiting to hear if he's alright for a day or so.

Romney may be YOUR nominee, but he's absolutely not good enough to vote for. It's that simple.

Conservative voting for Romney then? He's a liberal.

Liberals stick together! And Romney is a liberal! His entire record in MA reads like a New England liberal!

Oh, wait, I'm sorry when you're a liberal in the Republican Party, you're called a "moderate".

I'm still learning the terminology.

Not diminishing his past efforts, you do have to admit he has lurched to the Right more recently.

Although, I have to say, the tone of some of these campaign ad's, and the debate fodder has been cringe worthy to say the least. I wish they would stop.

He's right

Submitted by gwinnettman30045 on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:06am.

The comment was taken out of context. On the face of it, i think we can all admit it was not well phrased. What Romney was saying was that he was focusing on the middle class. he didn't mean that he didn't care about the poor or that he was against the poor.

However, all the Faux (or is that Fox) outrage here is laughable at best.

You're the same group of people who believe all this birther crap.
You believe all the white wing propaganda about Saul Alinsky, Rev Wright, Bill Ayers, ACORN, the President being a secret Manchurian candidate Muslim.

Normally, taken out of context is conservative code for "our guy said something typically conservative (racist, mysoginist, hateful, etc) and got caught so let's blame the so-called liberal media), but Romney was taken out of context. Then again, Romney is a moderate, not a conservative, so as a moderate, the likelihood of him saying something conservative is rather low.

Hard not to believe the "propaganda" about ---

Submitted by matthewdean on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 3:58pm.

Saul Alinsky, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, & ACORN; as the actual facts are right there to be seen.

Anyone who denies that is either a Marxist in training, a deadhead lib, or a fool.

You, Button gwinnetman 30045, have a mind that transposes facts as readily and easily as you transposed the letters "i" and "y" in the word misogynist.

There's just something about approaching elections that bring the liberal vermin down out of the rafters.

In case you missed the "vermin" allusion, I will add the following:

You are a putz.
