Barbra Streisand: 'Barack Obama Has Not Put Anyone on Food Stamps'

By Noel Sheppard | February 04, 2012 | 16:25

Noel Sheppard's picture

"Barack Obama has not put anyone on food stamps."

So hysterically wrote Barbra Streisand at the Huffington Post Friday evening:

[R]ecently in a debate moderated by Fox News analyst, Juan Williams, Gingrich was questioned about controversial remarks he had made about poverty and African Americans. Gingrich had previously said black Americans should demand jobs, not food stamps. Juan Williams attempted to coax Gingrich into acknowledging that he was playing racial politics. To which Gingrich responded untruthfully that, "more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history." And there ended that portion of the debate with Gingrich receiving deafening applause from the audience, looking strong and principled. What Juan Williams failed to point out in that moment is that Barack Obama has not put anyone on food stamps. The grossly irresponsible and greedy practices of those on Wall Street, which led to the subsequent crash of the housing market, created the most severe recession our country has experienced since the Great Depression (which Obama inherited from George W. Bush when he entered office). These events, along with the continuous deregulation of our financial sector, conspired to make a record number of people eligible for government food assistance. Juan Williams completely missed this important opportunity to reveal the real truth behind Gingrich's racist assertions.

In Streisand's warped view, the unprecedented rise in food stamp recipients the past three years is all Bush's fault.

Yet, job gains the past 23 months are because of Obama's policies:

The truth is, President Obama's leadership on the stimulus, bringing the auto industry back from the brink of collapse, adding nearly 3.7 million private sector jobs in 23 consecutive months of job growth proves that our country is moving in the right direction. Because of the President's policies, our economy is on the road to recovery and it's time we start celebrating the truth.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

So let's assume it took thirteen months for Obama's policies to take hold, and that he should only be judged on what's happened since the job market bottomed. Shouldn't that apply to people on food stamps as well?

As the United States Department of Agriculture reports, there were 39.6 million people on food stamps in February 2010. As of November 2011, there were 46.1 million, an increase of 6.5 million.

Are these Bush's fault too? If Obama gets credit for the rise in private sector jobs in the past 23 months, shouldn't he be blamed for the increase in food stamps recipients during the same period?

I doubt such logic would meet with Streisand's acceptance.

On a related noted, the actress that played Funny Girl showed that she still has a sense of humor writing, "Journalists need to stand strong and do their job, which is to challenge candidates immediately when they are purposefully misleading the public."

I guess she doesn't realize that if journalists did this, a Democrat would never be elected to public office anywhere in the country.

That goes doubly for her loves Bill Clinton and Barack Obama who would never have gotten near the White House except as part of a guided tour if America's press did their job.

But thanks for the laugh, Fanny.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

Republican Congress, 13 months ago

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 7:15pm.

Isn't that a coincidence that the bottom was hit about the time they were elected? And that things are slightly improving? Must be due to a delayed reaction to the Pelosi/Reid/Obama policies that recovered us from the (oops) Pelosi/Reid/Bush crashes. Does anyone recognize two names, one of which is no longer the Speaker, that may be in common with the crash of the economy? Guess what, Babs? It wasn't Bush, it was your buddies Pelosi and Reid that allowed the country to crash. Remember that Bush asked for more regulation of the banks about a dozen times, and Bawney Fwank, Nostrilitis Waxman and Maxine Wawa called him crazy and made it a racial issue that the thief Franklin Raines (who also was an Obama adviser) was screwing the country via Fannie Mae.

Babs, think you can cite FACTS some day? Or maybe some that aren't as laughable as 3 million jobs?

Obama's Ag Secretary

Submitted by povertypimpin on Sat, 02/04/2012 - 7:10pm.

AG Secretary Vilsack responds to the record number of people on food stamps by saying, “The reason why these numbers have gone up is we’ve done a pretty good job of working with states that had done a poor job in the past in getting the word out about this program. States like California, Florida and Texas under-performed.”

So Obama tries to distance himself from being the Food Stamp President while his Ag Secretary that he appointed is aggressively promoting Food Stamps because states have “under-performed” in signing people up for the program.

Technically, Babs is correct. The federal food stamp program is entirely voluntary, so no one is forced to participate. Obama is just an "enabler" in this regard.

Regarding food stamps, I recently saw something in the supermarket check-out that disturbed me. A woman ahead of me had a cart full of food and booze bottles. She used her EBT card to pay for around $100 worth of food the checker rang up. Then she had the checker separately ring up about $100 worth of booze, which she paid cash for.

Out in the parking lot, I saw this woman loading her stuff into a brand new $20,000 Honda that did not even yet have license plates.

To paraphrase the Sundance Kid: Go back to screeching, Streisand. It's what you're good at.

Ms. Streisand

Submitted by John21 on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 10:32am.

Ms. Streisand is a good singer, a fair actress but no one has ever claimed she was terribly intelligent.
The facts are what they are and the far left can whine about them and try and twist them to mean something else but the facts are the facts.
Mr. Obama and his administration have been a total failure throughout the economic sector, some points maybe arguable and bring his score up to a D- but the overall score would be an F.
His anti-business, anti-economic development and over regulation of every aspect of our economy has prolonged any real recovery. His increase in the debt and deficit will require decades to recovery from (if ever). The continuing decline of America's reputation and financial stability will be his hallmark. His continuing attacks on the American will and spirit will leave his legacy as one on the worst administrations in American history.

Bitterly clinging to Hope & Change

Poor Babs. I suspect she will soon become disillusioned.
