Multimillionaire Chris Matthews: Is Mitt Romney 'Just Too Damn Rich?'
Barack Obama and his reelection committee must be thrilled to know the media are going to assist them in invoking class warfare this campaign season.
NBC's Chris Matthews certainly did his part Sunday practically beginning the syndicated show bearing his name asking the truly revolting question is Mitt Romney "Just too damn rich?" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Just too damn rich. Is Mitt Romney with his $250 million, his accounts Zurich and the Caymans too far removed to know what life in America is about? For that matter is Newt Gingrich who breakfasts at Tiffany’s and suppers off Freddie Mac.

After the 2006 midterm elections when it was becoming clear that Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) - whose net worth is estimated at $35 million - was going to be named Speaker of the House, do you recall media members wondering if she was "just too damn rich" or "too far removed to know what life in America is about?"
Or what about Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry in 2004 whose fortune is estimated to be $193 million? Remember press members disqualifying him due to his wealth?
Or John F. Kennedy - who just so happens to be Matthews' hero! - in 1960? Or Franklin Delano Roosevelt any of the times he ran for president?
As the answer to all of these questions is an emphatic "No," why after eight decades of ignoring the wealth of Democrat candidates are the media going after Romney and Gingrich's?
Post script: According to the website Celebrity Net Worth, Matthews' fortune is $16 million with an annual salary of $5 million.
Who's he to call anyone "Just too damn rich?"
Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

The democrat party is littered with people who are MORE wealthy than Mitt. John Kerry married into the Heinz fortune which dwarfs Romney's assets. Pelosi and her husband are worth zillions as is Harry Reid...its a long list of ultra wealthy leading democrats.
Some how, I don't recall Kerry's wealth EVER being made an issue in the 2004 campaign.
The message is...its fine to be ultra rich if you are a liberal or democrat but unacceptable if you are a republican.
Sadly enough Newt (the trainwreck) has played into this class warfare BS against Mitt. I expect that from Matthews but not a leading republican presidential candidate.

Gingrich was so much a part of the establishment that they voted to against him. If you must identify an "elite" group Gingrich has been associated, he is part of the Reagan elites. The record is undeniable except when viewed through the very twisted prism of the Romney machine, including the very unfortunate and inaccurate article by Elliott Abrams. You are confusing Gingrich's clear record of Conservative accomplishments and votes with being a part of Republican establishment elites. Gingrich knows how to wrangle the opposition on both sides of the aisle to obtain legislation that was overwhelmingly Conservative in principle. Romney, however, is the establishment's elite choice. Romney is one of them. His record clearly shows this to be true.
I get that you are soured on Gingrich but writing untruths is bad form.

Wow. So, per the link about John Kerry, it clearly states that it's not from him:
"As with many of the wealthiest Members of Congress, much of the Massachusetts Senator’s wealth is attributable to his spouse."
Regardless, the media absolutely went after his (or his wife's) wealth:
"During the 2004 campaign, Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wealthy wife of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, came under pressure to release her returns from newspaper editorial pages and conservative critics."
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-502163_162-4080721-502163.html
In fact, here's the NYTimes arguing that his vast wealth made him an elitist Brahmin unlike the more "countryfried" Bush:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/10/politics/campaign/10wealth.html
As for Pelosi, she wasn't running for president, nor is Speaker a position for which there are elections.

Submitted by ThePickle on Sun, 01/29/2012 - 2:58pm.
OK your first link is about Cindy McCain and only mentions in passing Teresa Heinz Kerry being pressured to release her tax returns, something she never fully disclosed, so only partial credit there.
However while the NY times piece did say that then Senator Kerry "exudes a Brahmin reserve" a full reading of the article clearly shows that these observations with regards to his vast wealth were intended as an advisory piece to Senator Kerry.
They were by no means questioning whether or not he was "just to damn rich" instead they offered opinions on the publics 'perception' of him as a wealthy elitist and spent a considerable amount of time attempting to convince the reader that said perception, while a bit of an anvil around the Senators neck, was not necessarily deserved.
Example: "Images of Mr. Kerry windsurfing off Nantucket have become a staple for his Republican critics, who sometimes deride it as an elitist hobby. Windsurfers say this is not fair: The basic equipment for the sport can be had for about $1,000. Mr. Kerry's total investment is about $6,000..
Yet then the article goes on to say that this modestly invested, 'just one of the guys' windsurfer, on hearing that the winds were not quite up to par, intended to 'fly back in a few days if the breeze picked up.'
When he was advised that doing that would play into the 'rich sportsman stereotype' it was was Senator Kerry that acclaimed that 'I'm not going to live my life in fear. I'm going to be who I am.' ''
There was neither condemnation of this attitude nor questioning if it would effect his ability to lead in the article...it was simply focused on whether or not his high on the hog lifestyle would effect his ability to get elected.
In my opinion your second link falls short of a good argument.

Seriously, though....I wish it were Newt or Santorum, I'd go, it's five minutes from the house. There's really nothing I care to say or ask of Mitt Romney. I'm convinced he's going to be our nominee.
But I've kind of come to the landing that I'll vote for Santorum. Newt's schizoid liberal themed attacks on Mitt (and by extension capitalism, a la his attack on Paul Ryan's budget) made me change my mind. HE did that. Plus, I really liked what Rick Santorum had to say on Central America. We need to mind our own back yard, IMO. And we're not doing that.

Well, as Romney is actually living the American Dream, has actually become what most Americas strive to be, I would have to say: that's a resounding NO!
What is it with liberals, anyways? They keep telling everyone that we all need to work hard and achieve, to keep working towards a better life, to become greater that how we started, that this is what being an American is all about, fulfilling one's potential, but, once we do what they advise, once we reach, and exceed, that potential, especially financially, we're told that we're Evil for doing it!
This is their Philosophy: Go to School. Go to College. Learn to overcome your disadvantages in life and achieve greatness. But, once you do, you WILL be punished for following our advice! Everything you've accomplished over your lifetime will be taken away and given to someone else, so that we can help them to become what you once were, and be punished for it just as you were.
It's insanity!

it's controlling who has the wealth. They only want to take away from wealthy conservatives, but if you're a wealthy liberal you're part of the ruling elite, and so you get to keep your wealth. They don't want to redistribute money from all rich people, they just want to redistribute the money of other rich people. You only get to be rich if the liberal elite decide you can be.
