Eleanor Clift Says Something So Dumb Mort Zuckerman Does Double Facepalm In Disbelief

By Noel Sheppard | January 28, 2012 | 17:57

Noel Sheppard's picture

How many times have you watched a political talk show and just couldn't imagine the nonsense coming out of some liberal pundit's mouth?

On PBS's McLaughlin Group Friday, Newsweek's Eleanor Clift said something so absolutely absurd about tax cuts that U.S. News and World Report's Mort Zuckerman did a double facepalm on camera in disbelief (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ELEANOR CLIFT: The capital gains has not always been at 15 percent. You know, when Reagan came to town, the marginal rates were very high, and he got money as a movie actor, so he wanted to bring those down which he did. When the Bushes came into office, they wanted to reduce capital gains because a lot of their money came from investment income. The 15 percent, [Camera pans to Zuckerman doing double facepalm], the 15 percent we arrived at when W. Bush was in office, and it has not always been that low.

Got that? Reagan and Bush only cut taxes to help themselves. It had nothing to do with stimulating the economy.

I agree with Mort.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

You Know What's Sad?

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sat, 01/28/2012 - 6:28pm.

The liberals have figured out, and this includes the President, that they can say anything they want in criticism of a Conservative point of view and they will never, ever be challenged by the main stream media. It's mind boggling how this has become the norm. If you don't think so, just think back to the stupidity that has oozed out of the likes of Matthews, Maddow, Maher, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, or lets not forget, our own Vice President. Are they ever embarasssed? Do they ever correct the record? Absolutely not, because they kniow the American people have the memory of an ant and anything they say, right or wrong, stands.

Submitted by DemsRFascists on Sat, 01/28/2012 - 6:38pm.

Y'all can go crazy yellin' 'Godwin!' if'n ya want, but there is a significant portion of society -namely Democrats, and the Left Wing Media- which has developed a Nazi-like mentality.

These people believe that Democrats are a sort of Master (Political) Race of intellectually and otherwise superior beings, all of whose thoughts and policies are of the utmost racial purity. Correspondingly, they reflexively and instinctively believe conservatives are greedy subhuman racist degenerates, and will not consider otherwise.

It helps not at all that these same people are absolutely obsessed w race and matters of racial identity, nor that the Democrats could justly be called the Nat'l Socialist American Worker's Party.

Best wishes for an enjoyable day.

Well, what we need is a communist-type like Elizabeth Warren...she's not rich, she's only worth 15 million..and she doesn't have an investment portfolio worth $8million and reap capital gains like those Repub...oh, nevermind.

Obama was questioned on it.

Submitted by pbthinker on Sun, 01/29/2012 - 1:10am.

In the debate with Hillary, Obama was asked by Charlie Gibson about the Capital Gains tax when Gibson said that, each time the capital gains rate is lowered, more money comes in, so why would Obama want to raise the capital gains tax. Obama said that it wasn't about money, it was about being fair. Now, has he changed on bit since that debate? How didn't our illustrious free press not follow up on that?

So, that's how you add to the debt because it's not about money, it's about being fair. So, there you go, 'splains it all.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

I've watched Clift on The McLaughlin Group for as long as I can remember, and I can't recall her ever uttering an insightful statement or explanation. She's has always been little more than a bundle of talking points.  Her main function on TMG is to represent the emotional absurdity of the Left.

Hang on a minute, here.

Submitted by HockeyKid on Sat, 01/28/2012 - 8:31pm.

Clift is stating outright that Reagan wanted CAPITAL GAINS taxes reduced because he was still receiving movie residuals?!! Residuals are, and always have been, normal taxable income, so even beyond the idiocy of suggesting that Reagan was trying to reduce his personal tax burden, Clift's assertion is boneheaded.

I haven't been following Zuckerman for any extended period of time, but, over the past 6 months his total disappointment with this administration is obvious. I guess the love faded quickly after Obama as seen by this clip from January 2010. He not only points out his failure on the economy in general but housing, unemployment, health care and his cronyism, class warfare and the unprecedented spending of the taxpayers dollars.

Mega,

With all potentially due respect, do you actually read articles before you comment on them or do you just reflexively post something negative because you're a liberal and this is a conservative website?

Clift said Reagan lowered marginal rates and Bush lowered capital gains rates. The entire transcript consists of only one paragraph with four sentences. How could you possibly have missed this unless you didn't read it?

Please try to read articles before you comment on them or you will be banned for being a troll. ns

It's a reaction to a display of ignorance

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 01/29/2012 - 2:10pm.

"Wait, what exactly is the reason for the double facepalm?"

Well it could be that it's not the President who sets those tax rates. It's CONGRESS who does that.

"She said that both Reagan and Bush Jr. lowered the capital gains tax rate. Okay? Isn't that true?"

Only if both Reagan and Bush Jr. somehow managed to defy Congress and set those rates themselves.

"So what exactly is the problem?"

The problem is that there's too many people, like yourself, who thinks that Presidents actually have control over things like tax rates, when, if fact, they don't. Presidents enforce the tax rates, they don't set them. They can suggest them. They can accept them. They can even reject them, with the power of the veto. But they can never, EVER change them. They can not raise them. They can not lower them. Only Congress can do that.

Submitted by Semus on Sun, 01/29/2012 - 2:30pm.

Eleanor Cliff like all of President Obama's minions is a firewall under no circumstances will anything that helps the Republicans or the Conservative movement or conversely hurts the President or the Democrats pass her lips. It's fun to watch but fanatic dedication in any form is scary. Mort can laugh and mock her all day long, but what's his excuse for supported Obama in 2008? When an idiot with no money like myself knew what President Obama was all about, how come this billionaire genius didn't?

Everyone that once supported President Obama, explain why they don't anymore, LOUDLY. I think it would make a great ad, if they'd have courage to do it. The answer can't be just because he has no respect for the constitution or the law, which he doesn't.

Well she's right about that. Sometimes it's even been lower. In 1957 the rate was at 13.7 percent!

By the way, Elenore, to what do you attribute Clinton's lowering of the rate from 25.1 percent in 1996 to 19 percent in 1998? That's a 6 percent drop in just 2 years! Was Clinton doing that merely to benefit himself financially?

Submitted by megax5000 on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 1:32am.

Noel, once again thanks for responding, but you have an interesting definition of "troll". I didn't attack anyone in this page, neither you the columnist, nor any of the commentors here. It was an innocuous question that was just seeking clarification. Yes, it's a very short paragraph, but your point wasn't clear to me. This is what seems to have been your point:

"Got that? Reagan and Bush only cut taxes to help themselves. It had nothing to do with stimulating the economy."

So you're saying that the true goal was to help the economy? Okay fine. But there's no reason that they're proposals couldn't have helped both the economy and their own financials (they're not mutually exclusive).

And some posters here are saying that your/Mort's implication was that congress raises/cuts taxes not the president (which is true, but doesn't mean that a president can't spearhead an initiative.)

Anyway, if you want to ban me, go for it, dude. I thought you were a nice guy, but if asking a friggin innocuous question is that offensive to you, well then it's true I'll probably have difficulty making new friends here.

Making comments about killing/harming your democratic opponents however is A-okay apparently. Funny how that works out.

It is not his fault he cannot see what was clear to you, the columnist, Mr. Zuckerman, and all of the commenters here. It is not his limited capacity to understand English, logic, common sense, or politics. It is your fault for not keeping the class late just to tutor him.

By the by, this is a troll that loves to correct the tiny fudges in posts of others. Seeing that ----

  • Mr. Sheppard is not a columnist here, he is a contributor and associate editor.
  • NewsBusters puts a subject line on every post. Feel free to ignore it so we read the first part of your stupid twice.
  • No one claimed you attacked another. That is called a straw man.

  • Extraneous definition - 2b: having no relevance (an extraneous digression)
  • Stupid has no relevance here. Troll.

  • The exact quote is followed by So you're saying... No, troll, he did say. You quoted him. English confuses you, doesn't it?
  • ...that they're proposals... The word is their, troll.
  • ....they're proposals couldn't have helped both the economy and their own financials.... President Reagan quit working in the movie industry in the 60's, long before Miss Clift claimed he came to town to cut marginal rates. President Bush's money came largely from income, he earned $923 thousand in 2007, well into his presidency. So a lot of his money DID NOT come from investment income as Miss Clift says.
  • You do remember Miss Clift's statement? It was mentioned by Mr. Sheppard.

Submitted by John21 on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 10:27am.

Ms Clift has not lived in the real world for at least a decade. She is the leading confirmed propagandist for the far left and the Obama administration.

Her makes statements or claims that rarely have evidence, facts or common sense included. Can anyone remember the last time she said anything that was provable or was even close to logical? Does anyone believe that she has any credibility? Does anyone believe anything this woman says?
I think she comes up with the most assine statement he can find to remind people that she still exist and give her ego the false impression that she still is relevant to our society (clearly false).

Can anyone remember when this person was relevant to the political discussion or social interaction of our society? Eisenhower? Nixon?

She is just another one of the liberal firebombers that throw nonsense against the wall and hopes that the world is stupid enough to believe it.
