Jeopardy Contestants Can't Identify Picture of MSNBC's Rachel Maddow

By Noel Sheppard | January 26, 2012 | 22:52

Noel Sheppard's picture

The folks at MSNBC aren't going to be happy about this.

During Thursday's televised game show Jeopardy, none of the contestants could identify Rachel Maddow even when a picture of her was shown to them (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

With the category "A Real Rhodes Scholar," the first answer involved ABC's George Stephanopoulos with the correct question being Bill Clinton.

Answer number two - which included a picture - was correctly questioned as retired General Wesley Clark.

Next up, the final Daily Double, was about an Arkansas senator for whom an international scholarship is named. The correct question was offered, "Who is Fulbright?"

Yet, when the final answer was given - "This cable TV newswoman received a doctorate in politics from Oxford" - with a picture of her on the screen, nobody knew it was Maddow.

This can't possibly be great news to MSNBC execs given Maddow's lead role in the network's recent debate coverage.

On the other hand, and in fairness, Maddow was also the answer in a January 2009 Jeopardy. That time, the correct question was offered.

Has having her own show on MSNBC actually made her less recognizable?

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

Who wrote those "answers" anyways? I mean, really, who in their right mind would include Maddow in the same category as Clinton, Clark, and Fulbright? They, at least, had some importance in the world. So, I'm not surprised that the contestant didn't recognize her, given the context. Jeopardy should have worded the answer as "She's the most irreverent Rhodes Scholar we could think of."

Knowing random trivia while

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 2:10am.

Knowing random trivia while failing to see the big picture is quite common among leftists so I'd imagine Jeopardy is fairly popular with them. I remember a few years ago there was a question...er... I mean answer that involved the firing of Dan Rather from CBS and the question (I mean answer) mentioned that he was fired for airing a report criticizing then-President Bush and it did not mention anything about the wildly inaccurate content of the story.

Doctorate? This is what you get with a doctorate? If this was some fly-by-night school I'd say OK, whatever, but this was Oxford for crying out loud. The entire system of higher education is such a joke anymore. Anyone else ever think about how the people of our period of time are going to come across as a complete joke to people 1000 years from now?

Read more: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2012/01/26/jeopardy-contestan...

The clip shows only that the one contestant did not know who she was. Because it is a daily double, only he can answer. Suggest you change your article to reflect the rules of Jeopardy. Or better yet, drop such trivial nonsense as this. Who cares that a soldier did not recognize Maddow? I care that he didn't say "who was that racist Fulbright who voted against the civil rights act continuously since it was introduced in the 1950's" rather than giving him any respect.

TheHistorian: " . . . I care that he didn't say "who was that racist Fulbright who voted against the civil rights act continuously since it was introduced in the 1950's" rather than giving him any respect."

First, he didn't give anybody any respect; he answered a question with the simplest of answers.  Blame the producers of Jeopardy for including Fulbright in the game.

But if we're going to be accurate about the Fulbright description, this is what the contestant might have said:  " . . . who was that racist Democrat  Fulbright who voted against the civil rights act continuously since it was introduced in the 1950's."

That's history.
