Will Smacks Down Vanden Heuvel: When Obama Speaks Against Crony Capitalism Will Slogan Be 'No More Solyndras'?

George Will on ABC's This Week Sunday had a truly epic smack down on the perilously liberal editor of the perilously liberal magazine The Nation.

After Katrina vanden Heuvel waxed rhapsodic about President Obama at next week's State of the Union address laying out "a vision for a different economy, one that is not about crony capitalism, but is about a democratic capitalism that lifts all boats," Will struck back, "His slogan will be, what, 'No More Solyndras?'" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, HOST: I want to pick up on what you were saying, Matthew. You talked about the State of the Union. Let me bring this to you, Katrina. The president is going to lay out what he called a blueprint...

KATRINA VANDEN HEUVEL, THE NATION: A blueprint.

STEPHANOPOULOS: ... for how to get jobs. It's also going to be the first blueprint of his presidential campaign.

VANDEN HEUVEL: Yes.

STEPHANOPOULOS: What do you expect to hear? What do you want to hear?

VANDEN HEUVEL: I expect to hear -- and I want to hear -- themes that he sounded in his speech at the end of last year in Kansas, where he spoke about how this is a make-or-break moment for the middle class in this country, and began to lay out a blueprint for how we build a different economy and a vision for this country that is one that is forward-looking, that is tackling not just the fundamental income inequality -- that, again, movements have brought to the fore -- but lays out a vision for a different economy, one that is not about crony capitalism, but is about a democratic capitalism that lifts all boats.

And I think Matt is right that we're looking at a debate and a campaign and an election that could be about two fundamentally different visions of this country. We have a Republican Party that wants to take this country back, literally peddling recycled policies that brought us to the financial crisis we're still living through, millions living in economic trouble and pain...

STEPHANOPOULOS: George Will?

VANDEN HEUVEL: The president needs to speak to that and lay out a vision.

GEORGE WILL: When Barack Obama comes out against crony capitalism, his slogan will be, what, "No More Solyndras"? I want to hear that.

So do I, George. So do I.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.

Let's recap...

Submitted by Guapo Diablo on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 2:58pm.

ABC has one on-air conservative employee (George Will).

CBS has zero on-air conservative employees.

NBC has zero on-air conservative employees.

...and our left-wing friends want FNC to be outlawed - in spite of the fact  they have several on-air liberal employees.

BTW, doesn't Katrina vanden Heuvel remind you of all the reasons you'd never go back to your ex-wife or ex-GF?

The Keystone pipeline would have created jobs.

Submitted by The Vet on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 2:59pm.

Just heard Daryl Hannah complain on Power and Money that the Keystone pipeline would have only created temporary construction jobs. Cluebat for Daryl Hannah --- All construction jobs are temporary. It is the nature of the work. Once something is constructed, the workers move on to anther project.

I might consider Daryl Hannah somewhat of an authority on the Hollywood version of mermaids and cave women, but that's about it.

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 3:48pm.

I'm pretty sure that actors and actresses have 'temporary' jobs too - and they make a helluva lot more than construction workers, and do a helluva lot less, and their 'product' is usually forgettable, even if it was memorable at one point. At least a construction project has a lot longer 'shelf life' than some dopey Hollywood movie.

I think the only 'permanent' jobs - at least these days - are government jobs.

Darryl Hannah is a dope, albeit an attractive one.

The Reaction to Will

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 3:06pm.

When Will says, "When Barack Obama comes out against crony capitalism, his slogan will be, what, "No More Solyndras"? I want to hear that.", the reaction of the other panelists is amazing. Their collective Oooooo's! is as if George Will just called Vanden Huevel a b!tch to her face, instead of what he did, and that is calmly pointing out the hypocrisy of Obama.

Obama go on about Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs during SOTU, because I do not watch or listen to ANY Obama speeches. I'll read it, but I will not 'tune in'.

But then, I think EVERYONE should boycott the SOTU Tuesday night, including FOXNEWS. FOX should show a Reagan SOTU or Tom & Jerry cartoons or anything. If they promoted it well, they'd beat every other network in ratings for the time slot.

Thank you George for finally putting the silver spoon that Katrina was born with where it should be. This elitist bitch seems to think that everything she has ever said is a "pronouncement". If she had EVER had to work in her life her tune would be 180 from where it is now. She gives true meaning to imposing her socialist ideas on everybody else, but don't EVER try to take anything away from her or impose rules that would affect her life. She is a true joke.
