Andrea Mitchell on Iowa: 'Too White, Too Evangelical, Too Rural'

NBC's Andrea Mitchell on New Year's Day made it clear to Nightly News viewers that her Obama-loving network will continue using the race card to assist the current White House resident's reelection.

In a brief segment about the upcoming Iowa caucuses, Mitchell said "the rap" on the Hawkeye state is that "it doesn't represent the rest of the country - too white, too evangelical, too rural" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ANDREA MITCHELL: Iowa did propel a little known southern governor to the Democratic nomination back in 1976.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNKNOWN MALE ANNOUNCER: Jimmy Carter, clearly the winner, scored well, came from nowhere.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MITCHELL: And established that Barack Obama could attract white voters.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BARACK OBAMA: You have done what the cynics said we couldn't do.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MITCHELL: But Iowa Republican caucus-goers don't have a very good track record for picking presidents. Ronald Reagan didn't win the caucuses in 1980. Future President Bush finished third in 1988, and John McCain, the eventual nominee, came in fourth here four years ago. So why should Iowa matter?

REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST MIKE MURPHY: By no means is it the ticket to victory, but it is a winnowing out process to get kind of to the final three or four not unlike college basketball so the whole country can watch the big game.

MITCHELL: The rap on Iowa: it doesn't represent the rest of the country - too white, too evangelical, too rural.

Nice way of the NBC Nightly News informing viewers that much as the media did in 2008, the race card will be played whenever possible to assist Barack Obama in getting reelected.

Can you imagine any state in the union being referred to as "too black" or "too hispanic?"

No, I can't either.

Happy New Year!

Please do inform us,

Please do inform us, Goldilocks....

How white is "too white?"  How "evangelical" is too much?  How "rural" is too rural?

Are there "proper" proportions for whites to people of "color," for evangelicals to secularists, and farm land to urban property?

If so, Which state is "just right" in terms of diversity, religion, and urban-to-rural proportion?

Or better still, just explain that  Iowa is "too white, too evangelical, and too rural" for WHOM?  Or for WHAT?

It all depends. Everything is

Submitted by ant on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 8:50am.

It all depends. Everything is relative. You see, a Sheriff's Department near the Mexican border in a State with a well-known illegal alien problem has a tendency to pick up too many perps that aren't 'white enough'. Just as statistics show that the 'rapist' community also doesn't feature enough 'whites', illegal alien numbers are unfairly lacking in 'whites'.

I think maybe the FCC should check into whether they (NBC) committed some violation. Sounds like a hate crime or the likes. It ain't that simple, Andrea

Submitted by nkviking75 on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 10:02pm.

That's because the lack of competition for Obama causes the media to ignore the liberal. unionized Democrats in this state. Somehow we can't seem to keep from sending back Sen. Harkin and Rep.Boswell year after year. The people objected loudly to our Supreme Court's legalization of gay marriage by tossing out all three of the judges up for retention, but the Democrat controlled state Senate blocks every attempt to amend our state constitution accordingly.

What does represent the country?

Submitted by tnmacman on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 10:00am.

If being white, evangelical and living in a rural area doesn't represent the country then who would? A person who is black, anti-religion, and lives in the big city?

Andrea, here are a few facts.

- The majority population in this country is Caucasian.
- Most people live "outside" of the big cities.
- A vast majority of people in this country claim to be Christian.

As I've said before, when a liberal says something, you can rest assured that the complete opposite is the actual truth.

MITCHELL: The rap on Iowa: it

Submitted by ThePickle on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 12:44pm.

MITCHELL: The rap on Iowa: it doesn't represent the rest of the country - too white, too evangelical, too rural.

That's an incredibly racist statement....in fact it is so incredibly racist it will be completely ignored by those that make a living and score political points by decrying the overwhelming "racism" of other.

This judgment was made despite these inconvenient facts: that 72.4% of the population of the United States characterized themselves as "White" in the 2010 census.

Among Non-Hispanic or Latino:

63.7 % identified themselves as white

Among Hispanic or Latino

8.7 % identified themselves as white

The percentage of the population that live in rural areas is approximately 17% of the United States Population as a whole so in this instance Ms. Mitchell is correct in characterizing Iowa as available information shows that between 25% and 45% percent of Iowans, depending on age, can be said to live in rural areas.

And finally the percentage of those defining themselves as Evangelicals that's a sticky question as it depends on how one defines "Evangelical" but for the sake of argument I am going to assume she meant practicing Christians as the term evangelical has its etymological roots in the Greek word for "gospel" or "good news": (evangelion), from eu- "good" and angelion "message".

In that sense, to be evangelical would mean to be a believer in the gospel, that is the message of Jesus Christ.

That being defined....the percentage of the United States professing to be Christian is 76%.

Therefore Ms. Mitchell's assumption that the Population of Iowa doesn't accurately reflect the population of the US as a whole is correct only with regards the percentage of those in Iowa that live in rural areas (25% to 45% depending on age) as compared to the National percentage of about 17%.

As for the Ethnic makeup of Iowa and the religious propensities of that population. if we take Ms. Mitchell at her word that they are "White" and "Evangelical" and comparing that to the percentage of the National numbers listed above I would tend to describe them as typically American.

Religions

Protestant 51.3%, Roman Catholic 23.9%, Mormon 1.7%, other Christian 1.6%, Jewish 1.7%, Buddhist 0.7%, Muslim 0.6%

It's impossible for Iowa to be too white or too Evangelical. Regarding "Too Rural," yes Iowa is rural when compared to the East and West coasts of America, albeit many of these states also have vast counties that are rural TOO.

This ranks up there with Obama's comment about bitter white folk clinging to their guns and religion.

This poor old fool

Submitted by zachlind on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 2:36pm.

This is one of those moments when you have to give the Federal Government some small measure of credit for a mandated government program working, at least in appearance. In this case it’s the Affirmative Action adventure with a double whammy. Not only has NBC employed a marginally “skilled” person to attempt “news reporting” and possibly improved their “numbers” but at the same time have put an elderly person to “work.”

It really doesn't matter

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 2:40pm.

MITCHELL: ". . . . So why should Iowa matter?"

It matters to the two major political parties and it matters to the MSMers -- like Mitchell  -- who make a living covering it so that their networks can earn cash from advertisements for feminine hygiene products and Viagra.

To me, Iowa doesn't matter at all.  Neither does New Hampshire, South Carolina, et al, at least from a political perspective.

The real problem....

Submitted by Marcus Porcius on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 3:15pm.

...is that the rest of the country isn't more white, more evangelical, and more rural. And I'm not white, by the way, so let's stop the Nazi references, etc. right here.

I actually watched an episode of "House Hunters" on HGTV where the black house hunter specifically said they only wanted to live in a black neighborhood because of the better "sense of community...where people take care of each other." In other words, in white neighborhoods people don't do that AND it's okay to want to exclude people who aren't your color...as long as you're not white, then you're a racist. But I digress.

My point is that when this country was more white, more evangelical and more rural it was less politically correct, less welfare dependent, less depraved, less corrupt, less under the thumb of Big Government, less taxed, and had far fewer fatherless children.

In other words, the problem isn't that Iowa isn't like the rest of the country, the problem is that the rest of the country isn't like Iowa anymore...and even Iowa isn't as much like Iowa anymore either.

cajun is confused Marcus*

Submitted by cajun2 on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 4:14pm.

Not sure what you were trying to state in your post but I do agree with you on one point.

One billion people live in China and they all look alike, same in India and Africa. But here in the US, we are unique in that we are the greatest diverse society in the world.  Nothing wrong with that when you consider our people all came here for the purpose of a better life. We have some that were here as slaves, as exiles, and some sent here as punishment.  But all of us have held onto our "roots', values and traditions of our different cultures for a reason. That reason is the point I agree with in your post.  Cultures provide history, boundaries, values and morals, goals and ideals though each culture may be different.  Cultural differences is what makes the US interesting.  All of us are Americans should be first and our cultures  gives us those boundaries and morals.  This is why my post name is cajun too.

Where we have run into difficulties is that some in this country see "diversity" as race based. Certain "groups" of people are given special rights and some of those "entitlements' have destroyed those cultures.  The Native Americans are in even worse shape that blacks as a minority.  Almost 37% of natives survive on government entitlements and government land. They have surrendered and submitted to rules and laws different from other Americans, ruled by a "panel" of people from the BIA. To the dismay and destruction of their culture.

The same could be said about blacks in this country.  Sadly, in our history, we did have black slaves but in defense of our country, slavery was a practice throughout Africa and the world long before the US ever existed. As soon as an opportunity arose, the US corrected this horror. After generations of apology, treating blacks as victims, we have seen the damage done to the black "community". High crime, poor educational levels, 36% receive entitlements.  Blacks have become a lost culture due to the decades of race victimhood sold for political power.  Blacks and other minorities, need to look within their own cultures to find the traditions that made them strong and had the courage to begin new lives here.  They need to seek solutions to their problems within their own community and not attempt to blame others. Even if others are partially at fault, solutions will only come from within.

When each culture adheres to basic common rules of morals and values, all cultures will become "equal" and we will then have true diversity and individual freedom.  Affirmative action,  special rights for gays, entitlements for illegals, race baiting for political gain,  accomplishes nothing for any of those different cultures or "communities".

What class warfare and race baiting has done is distract from finding realistic solutions to our societal problems. That will never improve, for any group, until we are all treated and act like patriotic Americans first.
