Leno: Perry Wore Same Jacket in Anti-Gay Ad as Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain

Jay Leno on Friday took what many might think was a double entendre poke at Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry.

After playing the Texas governor's new ad dealing with gays serving openly in the military, the Tonight Show host quipped, "It's the same jacket Heath Ledger wore in 'Brokeback Mountain,' but we won't go there" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JAY LENO, HOST: Now, speaking of political ads. This Rick Perry ad that just started airing this week, I want to, give me your opinion of this. Run the ad.

BILL O’REILLY: Alright.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TEXAS GOVERNOR RICK PERRY: I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian. But you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know that there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school. As president, I'll end Obama’s war on religion, and I'll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage. Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again. I'm Rick Perry, and I approve this message.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

LENO: What war on religion? Hello? What did he kill Santa Claus now? What happened?

[Laughter]

O’REILLY: You gotta admit, the jacket is good though. [Laughter] Love the jacket.

LENO: It's the same jacket Heath Ledger wore in "Brokeback Mountain," but we won't go there. We won’t go there.

[Laughter]

Well, not exactly, but Leno was certainly implying Perry himself is gay.

As for the similarity, Leno wasn't the first to notice. Britain's Daily Mail wrote about this Friday.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Doesn't hit my threshold

Submitted by gopcongress on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 4:54pm.

Jay Leno is a comedian, therefore he has more latitude. And frankly, that was an ingenius find by his staff, comparing the same jackets.

Yes, we know Leno is liberal, and his jokes lean left just like his network's cable news. But at least his jokes are funny, unlike Letterman's, and he's a talk show host with emphasis on comedy.

Sorry, Noel, doesn't reach my threshold. It's not like you don't have at least 40 other examples a day from "real" news sources that more biased than Leno.

I found it funny too. Thanks NS. Perry was using a dumb analogy for presenting Anti -Christian bigotry. There are better ones. Conservatives need to leave teh gay thems alone and foucs on what they do best and that argue policy and reason about fiscal issues.

Social conservatives should hate Perry for running that ad. Comments like the one Perry made hurts social conservativism, because it makes everyone who supports it look all like idiots worried about "the gays".

John Kerry -- he wore a barn coat almost daily while he was trying his Massachusett's darndest to appear "down with the little people" and not at all just another male gigolo married to another dingy rich woman -- but they are good dependable coats and come in other colors too.

And Noel, please keep on doing what you do.

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 7:56pm.

I've never seen the movie, but it seems to me that Leno is just saying that he, himself, watches gay movies.

Perry's jacket is the same kind you'll find in abundance on most construction sites and in farm country. I can understand Leno not knowing how working Americans dress. Nice of him to equate a large segment of the country as being homosexual by comparison.

Just another reason to not watch late night shows.

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

on wearing the same thing! Have you ever seen him outside the studio? On the streets for his nauseating repetitive "jaywalking" skits? He wears the SAME baby blue denim shirt, and the same baby blue jeans, ALL THE TIME! NEVER CHANGES!

Secondly, why the hell is BOR on ? He never even mentioned it on his stupid-assed show! Hes too cool to say so? He promotes the hell out of every other thing hes doing, like his book tour, new books he writes monthly, his Factor gear crap, etc.

Thrid-why didnt O'Reilly DEFEND him huh? Hes a phony RINO!

Carharts

Submitted by Chulio on Sat, 12/10/2011 - 9:14pm.

Perry's wearing a frickin' Carhart coat. Working men wear Carharts. They come in brown or brown.

I've always liked Leno (better than Letterman anyhow), but he probably has no idea what Carharts are. Up here, they're known as the Alaskan tuxedo, suitable for all occasions.
