Rick Santorum on Moderators: Trump Wouldn't Be Any Worse 'Than What We Get from the Mainstream Media'

The media are all in a tizzy about the idea of real estate tycoon Donald Trump moderating a Republican presidential debate.

On Tuesday, one of the candidates, Rick Santorum, told KLIF substitute radio host Steve Malzberg, "I can't see in some cases where Donald Trump would be any worse than what we get from the mainstream media" (video follows with transcript):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

STEVE MALZBERG: What about Donald Trump as a moderator? Is that something you're comfortable with or not?

RICK SANTORUM: Well, I, you know, if you look at and see the, particularly who somebody the mainstream media has put up. You know, Brian Williams I wasn't comfortable with, and I had every right not to be given the questions he asked. Charlie Rose was, I mean, you go on down the list of all the people that they've had, these reporters who have tried to make this debate about them and not about the candidates and what they believe in, and rearranging times to make sure that the people that they wanted to have time get time, I can't see in some cases where Donald Trump would be any worse than what we get from the mainstream media.

MALZBERG: You must have been listening, because that's what I said an hour ago. I said Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper. Blitzer in fact mocked all of you after the debate prior to the CNN debate. He put together a montage, I forget in what context, but it was mocking of all the Republican candidates, and he knew that he was moderating the next one.

SANTORUM: Well, like I said, I mean, these debates have not, I think, reflected well on the media. They've been a lot of gotcha moments. They've been a lot of steering questions to whoever the flavor of the month is, and it's been more about trying to create conflict instead of trying to create light and give candidates really the opportunity to explain their position instead of this, you know, silly 30-second answers to, you know, how do you solve world peace. I mean, those are the things that I think really agitate a lot of the voters out there, and I guess that I'm not too sure Donald Trump will do any worse than any of them.

Rick Santorum is great.

LOL, I don't think Trump will be happy with him saying Trump should be able to do no worse than LSM. That is a pretty low bar, but certainly a true statement. I am sure Trump would do a better job AND be more entertaining to boot.

If Trump is a moderator, be prepared for LOTS of populist shrieking about his obsessive devotion, China.  Every question from Trump will mention China at least 50 times.

Submitted by Smartypants on Tue, 12/06/2011 - 3:15pm.

I think Trump will actually be a refreshing change in this role. I'm not a big ban of his, but I think he'll do a good job of bringing to focus issues that many conservative voters want covered. When they get these liberal media moderators for the debates, they're objective is often to make everybody look bad. They don't try to flesh out information as much as they try to back candidates into a corner in some way or another. I think Trump will ask more pointed questions and will encourage direct answers.

RICK SANTORUM SCORES!

Submitted by Avitar on Tue, 12/06/2011 - 4:16pm.

CBS was probably the worse but CNN was plenty bad.  There is no way the Donald would be worse than those.  There would also be the benefit of him asking politically incorrect questions like:

  • How should a candidate for POTUS prove his qualification to serve and who should the judges you appoint view as having standing to question qualification?
  • The United States currently runs an enormous current accounts trade deficit especially with China, what steps would you immediately take to reverse the current account flow and what further steps would you take if China becomes less cooperative in international relations?
  • What measures would you take to identify Americans who are acting on the behalf of hostile international interests from within American institutions and reduce their influence?

MANY ARE SICK OF THE MEDIA TELLING US WHO CAN'T WIN...
EVEN FOX HAS LOST THEIR CHEESE...YOU DO NOT PICK FOR US!!!
NOW THEY ARE HAVING A HISSY BECAUSE TRUMP HAS A MINI-DEBATE OR WHATEVER...
IS THERE ANY FREEDOM FROM THESE ARROGANT MEDIA TYPES???

SOME GENERAL RANDOM THOUGHTS...

A far as Obama...his voting record and endoresements in the Senate were clear...100% socialist utopian

The Repubs learned nothing after Dole...
they ran another shy old insider (McCain) against a bold younger platitude/promiser (Obama)

Big northeast Repubs want the least real conservatism and learned nothing from Reagan

The Nov. 2010 election that sent over 725 democrats home taught the sissy Repub bigwigs nothing

Only Newt has treated the biased pawn media as they should be treated...as the constant enemy

As long as the Repubs have no "quick reply force" or standard repeated "talking points" they
will appear to be pantywaists...they generally are horrible at "interview" debate and suckers for distractions and false premises

If Obama does not lose big...when can the Repubs ever beat the bold lying socialist utopians?

What's wrong with...

Submitted by Tom1969ca on Wed, 12/07/2011 - 12:23am.

What's wrong with having a GOP-member moderate the GOP debate? Seems like a no-brainer to me...

(Personally, I'd get Sarah Palin to do it rather than Trump, though...)

I seem to recall Palin saying that she believes Obama was born in Hawaii ... ah yes, here it is: "...I think he was born in Hawaii because there was the birth announcement put in the newspaper. But, obviously if there’s something there that the president doesn’t want people to see on that birth certificate. Then he seems to go to great lengths to make sure it isn’t shown.”  (http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2011/04/sarah-palin-on-trumps-birther-in...)

But why let a little thing like what Sarah Palin actually said about the matter get in the way of an opportunity to kick her once more, eh Jer?

As far as the questions she would ask the candidates, anything would be preferable to the merciless grilling Obama suffered in 2008...

  • How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
  • How does it feel to "win"?
  • How does your family feel about your "winning" breaking a glass ceiling?

(all asked by ABC's Charlie Gibson)

Of course, after such a tough vetting of the Democrat candidate for President, Gov. Palin (running for the #2 job) got all the softballs:

  • Do you have enough qualifications for the job you're seeking?
  • Specifically, have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
  • Aren't you conceited to be seeking this high level job?
  • What should America do if Israel attacks Iran?

(also all asked by ABC's Charlie Gibson)

Trump is one of those squishy moderates but would be a most entertaining moderator.

People seem to hate him for his business success, however I do not.

His propensity for saying whatever he wants is an attractive quality which might bring me to watch this debate.

I haven't been interested in watching the leftists pull the strings of the Republican candidates in public.

Trump may be a clown but how so compared to the other liberal moderators who have shied away from making the debates about the economy?

If Trump does nothing but introduce a heavy dose of economics and business functions into the debates I would be happy.  If his showmanship can get people to watch a debate that spells out the economic problems we are facing I would be doubly happy.

for all my time on this site I've seen Republicans complain that they don't have any representation of their own and the liberal media controls the debates. This cycle there have been two (Newt Vs. Cain and Trump). Very few watched the Newt and Cain have their debate and it was roundly criticized in the media and both sides are content with condemning Trump. Perhaps the complaints about the media controlling the message is not as sincere as I thought.

I don't feel at all cheated with the exposure of these candidates. I especially liked the Newt/Cain dialogue and Huckabee's forum featuring the Attys General.

I'm absolutely sold on the need to replace Obama.  And though It's definite I'll be voting for the Republican candidate, I'm still starved to hear what the Republican hopefuls have to say.
