Ed Schultz Equates Pepper-Spraying Occupy Protesters to Rodney King Beating
As NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell accurately observed Tuesday, America's media have pounced on the University of California at Davis incident where Occupy protesters were pepper-sprayed by campus police.
Doing his part Wednesday was liberal radio host Ed Schultz who on his Thanksgiving Eve program actually equated this incident to the Rodney King beating (video follows with transcript and commentary):
ED SCHULTZ: It is amazing to me that there is a law enforcement official who felt it compelled – and I’m going to say something now that is really distasteful but I feel like I have to say it because I am a product of the sixties – this is how law enforcement got the term “pig.” This is how they got labeled “pigs.” And that term just turns my stomach. I equate this to the Rodney King beating. I really do. The action’s no different than taking a nightstick out on a guy or to go right up and pepper spray people right in the face when they’re absolutely harmless. What’s the difference?
I'll bite: Rodney King was left with massive injuries as a result of that beating whereas a little soap and water cures a pepper-spraying.
Far more importantly, all these protesters had to do was stand up and disperse as they were being instructed and none of this would have happened.
In the media's rush to defend the students while castigating the campus police, they seem to forget that these protesters were illegally blocking a thoroughfare and refused to move.
It is indeed fascinating to watch so-called journalists take the side of lawbreakers when they share the political views of the agitators.
By contrast, when folks peaceably gathered in parks they rented to air grievances about how their tax dollars were being spent, they were labeled by these same media members as gun-toting, racist homophobes.
We Americans have surely learned a lesson in the past couple of years about what forms of civil disobedience will be tolerated by those lucky enough to make good money "reporting the news" to the citizenry.

When I was laid off from the power company in 1996 I took the job of maintenance supervisor in the prison where I now work. It was still under contruction when I went there. The superintendent and my self were walking around one day and he did not see any fire hoses. He asked the contractor. They were not required by code. He said put that on your list we need fire hoses. So after the buildings were turned over we began to install the hoses. I told him that since it had not been engineered they would be no good for fight fires. He said he didn't care he was only going to use to put down a riot. He was a black guy.

Rodney King was just like the OWS in the sense that he could not take responsibility that his own actions caused his own situation, so the police had to be to blame. Just like the OWS, that their being pepper-sprayed was not their fault, but the fault of the police that were quelling their disturbance. If they didn't want to be pepper-sprayed, then they should have dispersed when they were told to do so.
One of the biggest travesties served on the justice system was what happened to the police that were trying to arrest Rodney King. If you remember, the police were acquitted by a jury in the first trial. It was only when we got the federal government with their racial bias involved that we got a decision against the police. Far as I was concerned, that was double jeopardy and never should have happened. Just another case of government over-reach.

Nice try. Last I checked, Tea Partiers don't attempt to stop law enforcement from performing their duties.
I'm no blanket fan of law enforcement. I think that there are quite a few professionals in our police departments, but far too many of them relish being thugs and bullies and think that because they have a gun and a badge that WE work for THEM.
However, I don't pick fights with the cops, like these dumb kids did. They were ACHING for the cops to do what they did. And what, now those same dumb kids who wanted so badly to have their little confrontation with the cops are now crying because they got the fight they were looking for? Thank the Shahinshah those kids weren't in Germany - the German cops of the modern day would have just started busting their heads open, cameras or none. I think the cops at UC- Davis showed quite a bit of restraint.
Face it. These weren't just a bunch of poor innocent kids who were just sitting. These kids were out to obstruct law enforcement in the performance of their duties. The kids badly wanted what they got and got what they deserved.
Now, if you please, list for me incidents at the Tea Parties which required the cops to do much more than direct traffic.

The entire assumption behind your comment is systemically flawed, as you are as likely to see a Tea Party activist willfully and illegal defy a lawful order to disperse as you are to see an Occutard "take a bath" or "get a job".
Despite your overwrought hand wringing, the fact of the matter is that OC spray (Oleo Resin Capsicum) is routinely used to disperse crowds and is in fact one of the least likely actions, with regards to use of force, to inflict serious injury on passively resistant protesters. Even grabbing a non-compliant protester and physically moving them out of the area is much more likely to result in serious injury to both the protester and the police. And yes I am extremely familiar with both the use of OC spray and crowd control.
The simple answer, that would have avoided this entire episode, would have been for said protesters to comply with the officers legal order to disperse. Instead they chose to willfully violate the law and as such they faced the consequences of that poor choice.

Well good for you and your fond reminiscing about the good ole day's, however I am quite sure that with regards to the use of OC spray and Crowd Control I have a great deal more knowledge not to mention experience with both. If you had bothered to actually read my initial post you would have seen that based on statical evidence and experience MODERN tactics in crowd control has gravitated to the use of methods that are 1) more effective and 2) less likely to result in serious injury to either the protesters and police alike.
As for the use of OC spray you are woefully uninformed as to its most common day to day use in law enforcement and that is to gain compliance with a resistant offender. The vast majority of the incidents wherein OC spray is deployed happen with single individual, not as you claim "to quell riots" Likewise has the use of either CS or CN gas (Tear Gas) fallen off sharply as a means of effective crowd control in urban settings are the tendency of the gas to effect those outside the area in question (innocent bystanders) became problematic.
You may not like it, but the facts are that police used the least dangerous, both to themselves and the protesters, method to gain compliance available to them after the protesters refused a lawful order to disperse. Cuffing a suspected criminal, if you had any experience in law enforcement at all, is not something one does until AFTER he is assured compliance of said suspect OR the officer is assured adequate back up in case said suspect decides that he is gonna put up a fight.

SO, they refused to allow the officers free passage, along with anyone else who couldn't get through because this fetid crowd of Occuturds decided their right to sit on their ass outweighed everyone else's rights.
They were given the opportunity to unlink arms and leave, several times. The Occuturds chose to stay, even when they were told what the consequences would be. So, after being given the chance to leave, and being told that the next step was OC, they contnued to sit. Btw, they were violating a law, by obstructing free movement. You can chose to make light of it, or excuse it, which liberals are doing, but there it is. So, rather than start to swing batons, the police OC'd them. They didn't "tear gas" them, they didn't beat them, they used the best less than lethal tool available to them.

These police officers showed they are well trained and behaved professionally. See, when threatened by a crowd, surrounded 4-1, they first ASK politely for the protestors to move. They did not. The police then have an order of least aggressive methods. First show the badge (riot gear) then ask, drag, spray, club, then shoot rubber bullets, then live ammo if faced with violence. They did use the least of their choices to deal with this crowd. Each method used is based entirely on the actions of the protestors.
That is why the UC Davis occupiers were sprayed. The protestors ACTIONS at Denver, Oakland, Portland and Zucotti Park, were subjected to a greater degree of force. It is because of the ACTIONS of the protestors.

because the police commission in LA refused to give the cops on the street OC spray. They had the choice, according to the use of force standard in effect at the time, to go from a verbal command, to the use of a baton, they had no option to use OC because they didn't carry it. And, if anyone saw the video, King was given the option of complying with the commands of the police each time they employed a baton strike. He didn't, so he got struck again, in accordance with the rules of force the LAPD was operating under at the time. Then, he was given the opportunity to comply again. Then, after the state trial, the Feds stepped in, and charged the officers involved, because they didn't get the verdict they wanted.
And the next step, above a baton strike, was the use of deadly force.
