Michele Bachmann Greeted With 'Lyin' A-- B--ch' by Jimmy Fallon's Band

As we get nearer to Election Day, Americans on both sides of the political aisle must be wondering if the media will have any limits concerning what is an acceptable attack on one of President Obama's opponents.

Consider that on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, as Republican presidential candidate and sitting member of Congress Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) was introduced Monday, the band played a song called "Lyin' A-- B--ch" (videos follow with commentary):

As CBS's Minnesota affiliate reported at its website Tuesday:

Jimmy Fallon’s house band the Roots didn’t have a warm welcome for Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann when she appeared on the NBC show early Tuesday.

As Bachmann strode on to the stage at Fallon’s “Late Night,” the show’s band played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song called “Lyin’ Ass B****.”

The song begins with a distinctive “la la la la la la la la la” refrain — the only words audible before Bachmann, smiling and waving to the audience, sat down.

Hot Air reported Tuesday:

The dumbest part of this, of course, is the drummer tweeting about it to make sure everyone got “the joke,” which defeats the purpose of disguising the insult...Fallon himself tweeted a few hours ago that the drummer is “grounded” but we’ll have to wait ’til tonight’s show to find out if that means anything more than “please stop yelling at me about Bachmann.”

So where are America's women's groups - like the National Organization for Women - on this?

Is every attack on conservatives now acceptable in this country?

Apparently so, for ABCNews.com reported this Tuesday as a "joke on Michele Bachmann" without an ounce of outrage or disgust:

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Exit question: Would a female reporter for ABCNews.com or any news outlet in the nation have thought this was just a joke if a prominent Democrat woman like Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi had been so disparaged on national television?

Update: Fallon apologized to Bachmann on his Twitter account Tuesday: "I'm honored that @michelebachmann was on our show yesterday and I'm so sorry about the intro mess. I really hope she comes back."

Actually ABC does have a story

Submitted by The_Barrel_Guy on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 10:35am.

ABC is running a piece by Russell Goldman on "The Note" that says the drummer calls the song tongue in cheek... If that is so, then perhaps NBC should play the same piece the next time Mrs. Obama appears on one of their sets...

If not, Fallon and his whole crew should be summarily fired...

B) Watching Jimmy Fallon flap his arms like a bird after being thrown off a roof?

I am no Bachmann fan but this makes me sick. This illustrates the contempt the show has for conservatives and their viewpionts - viewpionts shared by a majority of Americans. I use to watch the Fallon show but no more. Everyone should boycott the show. Perhaps if they lose enough viewers they will show a little respect to people with different pionts of view.

It's Fallon's show. What happens on his show reflects on him. The fact that the drummer wasn't fired outright suggests that the song was acceptable to Fallon and the show's production team.

The proper thing for Fallon to do is apologize on his next broadcast.

Submitted by misterbee241 on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 12:04pm.

I've spent some time in a band or two. after a while, each musician will get used to what the other guys know and what and how they do things. I played bass with one lead guitar player for a number of years. he could start a song and i could jump right in with him,, and vice versa. Once we played a Navy enlisted club. a Chief petty officer came up and asked us to do anchors aweigh. none of us had played it before. we ran through it twice then turned up the volume and played it. So Fallon's drummer probably called the tune and everybody just jumped in. That doesnt excuse him though for his bad manners.

If you're not getting flak, you're not over the target.

Rehearsed

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 2:12am.

There are rehearsals for certain parts of a show, but not necessarily the bands music.

However, whomever directs the show wants every minute accounted for, including what the band will play, the lyrics sung, and for how long the music will last approximately. It is highly doubtful a major network would allow a rowdy band of counterculture artists to have carte blanch on song selection, including acceptable lyrics sung on air.  As such, there are only a few scenarios:

  1. The people responsible for keeping track of and approving the songs the band plays, songs that are intentionally selected for maximal effect for each gag and guest on the program, either knowingly agreed to the song or failed to find out about the song pre-production.
  2. The band switched the pre-approved song for Bachmann without the knowledge of the person(s) responsible for keeping the band on a leash..

Fallon, a muscian, may not have had a clue beforehand but he is savvy about this genre of music and may have known the song after the band started playing it.

As it turns out, the drummer of the band tweeted he had a special snarky song planned.  Later on he tweets (boasts) about it being a perfect song for Bachmann.  After the snark hits the fan, the drummer switches to CYA mode and says it was "spur of the moment".

Nope.  It was premeditated.  The drummer is a lying Obama-loving Leftist and his own words betray him.

But the segment producer and the band knew what they were going to do - and no one in the chain of command up to the executive producer objected pre-production. The song selection was deliberate. That can not be disputed.

What beef they have with the Minnesota congressman is up for conjecture. Maybe they just feel that way about all Republicans? It would be interesting to know what in particular they disagree with Mrs. Bachman. Maybe they could work out their differences if they sat down and talked.

Mrs. Bachmann is pretty good at explaining and defending her views. I'm sure she could explain the traditional marriage point and perhaps even gain some respect from the band members. Well, that is a stretch.

Most entertainers think that oh-mo-sexuals (gaies) deserve something called "equal-equal rights." Rock and roll musicians for the most part are liberal and therefore have a built in prejudice against anyone that believes that homosexuals aren't entitled to double "equal rights."

The fact is that oh-mo-sexuals can marry as long as they marry a person of the opposite sex. So this idea that conservatives like Mrs.Bachmann seek to deny the Ohmos rights are delusional or more likely are being disingenuous.

It could be that the drummer or other band members hate her foreign policy positions and with that she could learn a thing or two from the band.

Its a foregone conclusion that if a person is gay they will marry a
person of the same sex, not "as long as they marry".

Also it is not a "fact" that all homosexuals can marry in all States. You could argue that a person could visit a State that does allow it.

The Canadian power trio known collectively as Rush is amazing.  But people either love them or hate them.  I am in the former category.  But then, I like songs with more than four chords, superior musicianship, and oh by the way, the greatest drummer and poet on earth is part of Rush.

Dave, Scuba Dude, and I (for starters) can go on and on and on about them.  Look up "Tom Sawyer" (their most well-known song) to start out with.  Or really, anything off of Moving Pictures.

Questlove..

Submitted by greggy on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 12:52am.

presented a disgusting, misogynistic insult, to an invited guest on LNWJF.

As a lame excuse, he now claims that it was a spur of the moment decision. Yet, HOURS after the taping, and before airtime, he was bragging on Twitter to his followers about what he had done.
Since Fallon is obviously on Questlove's Twiiter list, Fallon definitely knew there was a "snark" at the expense of one of the guests, before the show aired. You want to tell me he didn't send Quest a text, or call him, to ask what he was referring to?
Then, after the show had aired, Quest approvingly retweeted a follower's comment that "it was the perfect song for her."
Clearly, Quest had no regrets about what he had done, hours after he had done it. So his claiming some kind of exemption for a "spur of the moment" decision (which I do not believe), rings entirely hollow and meaningless.

Fact: if this had been done when Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton was on the show (among other liberal/Demo women), not only would The Roots have been fired from LNWJF ALREADY,
but the entire world would be on fire right now, with deafening official condemnations and outrage flowing from many persons in the world of politics, entertainment, "women's groups", and the media.

Of course, when you think it's OK to insult a guest with whom you disagree politically, by calling her a "Lyin' Ass Bitch", a song whose lyrics refer to a woman as a “slut trash can bitch,” and bragging to your followers that you've done so, it's a sign of a sick, low mentality. Of course, the rap genre is full of exactly this sort of gutter culture "bitches and ho's" mentality, and too many black "artists" actually think it's OK.

Fact of the matter is, liberals who claim to be "women's rights" advocates are mostly perpetrating a lie of ommission, in that all that they really care about is LIBERAL women. Similarly, many if not most liberals who are consumed with and by political correctness, and are forever diligently searching for faux reasons to be offended (even claiming to hear "dog whistles", when they don't exist), either turn a blind eye to things like this, or they outright applaud them.

Balboa thinks it's important for us to know that he's just sure Fallon didn't know about it in advance. That point is virtually irrelevant - Fallon gave Questlove that lattitude, Quest works for Fallon, it's Fallon's show - Fallon's ultimately responsible for Questlove's actions.

My best guess is that there will be virtually no consequence for this disgusting act - whereas, again, if this had been done to Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton, The Roots would not only have been fired already, but they would have become persona non grata in the business.

Am I smarter than a lawyer?

Submitted by greggy on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 1:44am.

I don't know - I guess it would depend on the issue, and it would depend on the lawyer.

I thought Rush used a stupid choice of a word, in making his point. Of course, sometimes Rush will say something in a certain way that is purely designed to drive the liberals crazy. But even though describing a white person's attitude as uppity is OK, I don't think it's OK to describe a black person's attitude as uppity. Some will say that what's good for the goose is good for the gander, but I think good judgment is important. You can be considerate without surrendering to PC idiocy. There's no real good that comes out of using words gratuitously to provoke people, especially when the use of that word has a connotation that is associated with racism.

That said, I have a far bigger problem with what Questlove did - for a number of reasons. It was far more profane, it was far more rude, it was far more hurtful, he planned it at least several minutes in advance, and he expressed specific pride in it afterward.

Ironically, Rush would have a far more valid (and believable) "spur of the moment" excuse, than Questlove would. The majority of Rush's show is stream of consciousness, spontaneous speech. That's a big difference.

Even though what Questlove did was far more offensive, my guess is that the media would much rather talk about what Rush said.

Rush stepped in it with the "uppity-ness" comment. Its meaning is clear and it's unnecessary to make the point, which at the same time makes the other side's point about us. Very bad choice of words.

Being "uppity" is just another way of saying "elitist snob". I fail to see how Mr. Limbaugh "stepped in it".

You should also be advised that Mr. Limbaugh will use certain words to GET a reaction, and it works every time, and in so doing, it shows what fools we have in our wonderful media. Take his use of the word "regime" to describe the administratiion of His Majesty The Shahinshah. Chrissy Matthews threw a temper tantrum about in on his show, Softball. Mr. Limbaugh promptly played that clip on his show and proceeded to use the word "regime" CONSTANTLY in his opening segment which followed. And he has referred to His administration as the "regime" ever since.

Sticking to my guns..

Many, if not most people realize that the word "uppity" has a history of being used in tandem with the word "ni**er" following it. It was used to refer to black people who talked back to whites. It was also used as a slur against blacks who became too successful, and achieved beyond their "appropriate" station.
So I personally don't think it's helpful to use the word "uppity" to refer to any black person. If you've never heard of this slur, you're probably in a minority of persons who haven't. You are quite incorrect when you say it's just another way of saying "elitist snob" - it has quite an ugly historical context when used in reference to black people.

If you read my post, you saw that I specifically stated that I knew Rush often used certain words to get a reaction out of liberals - and I think that in many cases, that's just fine. IMO, however, using the word "uppity" to refer to a black person is not one of the times when it's fine, for the reason stated.

Using the word "regime" to refer to the Obama administration, is altogether different. Of course, Chris Matthews bitched when Rush used it the first time - only to be humiliated and exposed as a hypocrite when video was released showing Matthews using it to refer to "the Bush regime". Other liberals had used the term "regime" to refer to the Bush admin, as well - further exposing Matthews' hypocrisy on the subject.

That's fair game. It also isn't comparable to using the word "uppity" to refer to any black person. Why not use the word "arrogant"..or "elitist", instead - in light of the ugly historical connotation? What is the upside to using the word "uppity"? There is none..

You're right, uppity is used in that context but down here it's used for anyone that develops a superior attitude. My problem with the whole affair is there are too many people waiting in line to be offended.

or any other individual, to decide for yourself, based on your own best judgment.

And I wouldn't go so far as to say that the use of the word uppity is intended by every person who uses it as "racist", but it sure does give that impression.

There's also a difference between some average guy using a loaded word like uppity, and a radio personality with millions of listeners using it. It's a word that lends some support to claims by liberals, of racism. I don't see the benefit, when there are so many other words available without that history.

Why. please forgive me for being on this earth less than four decades and thus not being familiar with every single last slang word or insult ever devised in the English language!

In my time here on earth, I have heard "uppity" used MANY times, and it is usually followed by a period.  And uppity means SNOBBY.  Is ANYONE going to deny that our ruling family isn't SNOBBY, or, dare I say, UPPITY?

My Shahinshah, do we have to reinvent the English language to use words that describe our ruling family without a good chunk of the population getting their panties in a bunch?

Sorry.  Mr. Limbaugh used "uppity" by itself as a adjective, and a very accurate one at that.  You have a case if he followed it with a word like ______ (insert racial slur there).  Until then, IMHO, neither you nor anyone else has a case.

I've heard of "uppity" employees, kids, women, you name it.

Matter of fact, the only people I hear complaining about its use is "uppity" liberals.

You both sound like guilty white liberals who don't get out enough. As I stated, I've heard "uppity" used in conjunction with any number of races, sexes, political classes and economic classes. Never once has it crossed my mind that its usage is racist. Must be I don't get out much, huh?

This whole episode is the epitome of how liberals deal with dissent and differences of opinion. These brain dead musicians could never in a million years engage Michelle Bachmann in an actual debate--she would wipe the floor with them within minutes. Their only way to strike out at Bachmann is to do something along the lines of what they did. Otherwise, they are powerless. Left wing arguments do not stand on their own and they don't hold up to scrutiny, so those holding right wing positions must be dehumanized and destroyed.

Despicable. Unprofessional. Racist.

Someone in last nights Republican debate should have called out NBC, Fallen and that racist to demand an apology from all parties involved. Also, to demand an explanation how this happened on national TV. And who is going to lose their job for this despicable behavior. This is no way to treat a woman, sitting U.S. Congresswoman and U.S. Presidential candidate.

They immediately fired Imus for a lesser offense against a college basketball team, but somehow this incident doesn't merit the same attention.

We all watched the MSM attack Gov. Palin relentlessly. Who is standing up for women these days? Aren't there any Senate or House Republican men willing to stand up to these childish and partisan individuals with access to our nationwide TV airwaves?

I'm really mad about this.

Apologizing for a premeditated and deliberate insult merely compounds the insult.

This is what it is. Does a lying "apology" help in anyway? I think not.

If NBC fired everybody responsible -- a la Penn State -- that would help; but it is not going to happen because for one thing the top brass of NBC is not apologetic; they are, as you put it, lying scum.
