Paul Begala: 'Newt Gingrich Would Be a Godsend to the Democrats'
Because you probably don't pay much attention to Newsweek or the Daily Beast, you likely didn't know former Clinton adviser Paul Begala is now a columnist for the combination of these failing so-called news organizations.
Demonstrating exactly why the merger of these two perilously liberal outlets appears to be a financial bust, and why he fits in so perfectly, Begala on Monday published a piece entitled, "Newt Gingrich Would Be a Godsend to the Democrats":
Perhaps the day has finally, belatedly, blessedly arrived when the Republican Party has found the transformational, revolutionary figure it’s been pining for. Perhaps the GOP has awoken to the charm that was always there: the constant use of “frankly,” the know-it-all historical references, the grandiosity, the bombast. Perhaps Republicans have found the fresh face they feel they need—in a 68-year-old man who first ran for Congress in the Nixon administration.
Or perhaps not.
More likely the Gingrich surge is just the latest Republican tulip craze (count the pedantic historical references I use in Newt’s honor!)—with Newt simply serving as the latest vessel for the ABR movement: Anybody But Romney.
With writing like this, it's hard to imagine Daily Beast/Newsweek is having a hard time finding readers. But I digress:
Newt could go down in history as having contributed crucially to reelecting two Democratic presidents. During Bill Clinton’s 1996 campaign, Gingrich perfectly served in the role of villain. Facing a moderate Republican war hero, the moderate Democratic non-war hero was in a bind. Demonizing Bob Dole was going to be somewhere between difficult and impossible, though Lord knows I tried. (I still cringe when I think about the time I said Dole looked like he wanted to club a baby seal.)
But Newt was a godsend: within weeks of the 1994 GOP landslide—before he’d even taken the speaker’s gavel—Newsweek’s cover dubbed him “The Gingrich Who Stole Christmas.” When he whined about his seat on Air Force One coming home from the funeral of the assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the New York Daily News’s cover featured Newt in a diaper with the headline “Cry Baby!”
While Dole was looking for ways to avoid a government shutdown, Newt was looking for ways to cause one. He overplayed his hand so terribly that Clinton was able to draw a line in the sand like Col. William Barret Travis. Newt’s intransigence allowed Clinton to show resolve, and the Comeback Kid was reelected by relentlessly attacking what his ads called “Dole-Gingrich.”
Not really, for what leftwing shills like Begala intentionally disregard is that blaming Gingrich for Dole's failure in '96 is like blaming Abbott for Costello's weight problem.
The reality is that Gingrich's battles with Clinton his first two years as Speaker ushered in ten more years of Republican control of the House, an immutable fact the Left all seem to conveniently ignore.
But this is the typical Gingrich-bashing by folks like Begala who feel the need to find a silver lining - no matter how dishonest - in the dark cloud of Democrat Congressional failures following the '94 Republican takeover.
Most importantly, what lies beneath the surface of all these Gingrich attacks is the fear liberal media members have of President Obama having to debate the former House Speaker.
No matter how they bluster and puff up their chest, each and every one of these so-called journalists knows full well the former history professor would carve up the current White House resident like a perfectly cooked Thanksgiving turkey.
This would be their worst nightmare, which is why they all feel the need to attack the intellectual capacity of a man with a Ph.D. and 25 books to his credit.
As for Begala, readers are advised that the only office he ever held was Students' Association president at the University of Texas. According to Alcalde, the alumni magazine, Begala actually lost to Hank the Hallucination, a comic strip character in the school paper. The arrogant CNN contributor eventually won in a run-off.
Nevertheless, isn't it delicious that initially more of his fellow students supported a comic strip character over him?

Aren't these the people who were hoping that Reagan would win the Republican nomination?
Damn Right...

he would be a God send to the Democrats. As President he would drastically improve our country's economy which would be good for them too. Granted, they are too stupid to understand that at this moment.

Reagan was the perfect candidate for the perfect storm that destroyed the Carter Presidency. The clouds are again all around and a properly run campaign by the Republican nominee will ride through the storm and be the new dawn as it was in 1980.
There are two things the candidate must do and were done by Reagan. One. Rain fire and brimstone down on the heads of his opponents and Two. Talk passionately with upbeat enthusiasm to the people and promise to lead them to a better day. Wow... who can ever forget the Gippers sunny smile in the depths of the Carter despair.
Unfortunately, the GOP has no Reagans in the offing

Gingrich is no Reagan. He is more intellectual than Reagan, but he is a Beltway creature whose effectiveness as a conservative ranges from good to bad.
He happens to be the GOP Flavor of the Month (as the MSM phrases it). We've seen Bachmann, Perry, Cain, and now Newt-ron at the top, and none of them are Reagan-esque. I think the GOP stands a good chance of bloiwing this opportunity in 2012 because its candidate is not strong enough. Another Dole or McCain won't do the trick.
Would do pay-per-view to see Newt one-one-one versus Barry

Would make Cheney's humiliation of Edwards look tame by comparison.
Obama would be relegated to making personal attacks and blaming Bush. i.e., He'd look ridiculous.

Let us give him exactly what he wants. If Newt gets started early...well he delivered the first Republican win in forty years. If he has the time He will have the Party organized to the point that the US will have no debt and all of the Nobel Prizes.
I hate to say it, but I (sort of) agree with the Forehead here

Newt is not a true conservative (he just plays one when it's convenient), and like either Romney or Perry, would be a dream-come-true for the Dear Ruler's camp.
Newt does well in debates and on TV apperarences, as he says all the right things, but when it comes time for him to put his money where his mouth is (that would be his actual voting record), he whiffs.
Puting a RINO in the White House who will merely slow the progression of Obamunism isn't good enough this time.
It has to be somebody that will halt said progression, then immediately begin reversing it.
We don't have ten years to reverse course.
We have three.
Maybe.

Ok then who then? The fact is Newt is better than Obama, Romney is better than Obama, hell.. Ron Paul is better than Obama!! I would rather deal with a post Paul world than a post Obama world, yes?

There's not a single candidate running who is going to do that. Heck, they couldn't even if they wanted to. The elephant in the room that no one wants to admit is that it's already too late.

Only if "godsend" now means "worst nightmare". I would pay money to see Newt debate the droning blowhard Obama.

Be careful what you wish for. The community organizer is really no match for Gingrich, although I'm sure there's someone in his campaign that knows that also and Obama will avoid debates like the plague.
I would expect Obama to avoid debating Newt, if Newt gets the nomination. He'll think up some phony excuse and not give the public any ammunition. I just hope Newt has a plan for beating Obama that doesn't include a debate. Let's face it, Obama and the Democrats refused to debate on Fox News because they didn't want any tough questions. Now, they'll refuse to debate, period, and the LSM will let them get away with it. The question is, will the voters let them get away with it?
Newt already has a plan for that

"I just hope Newt has a plan for beating Obama that doesn't include a debate."
Newt already has that covered:
"Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich promised on Friday evening in Iowa that if he wins his party's nomination, he will follow President Obama around the country until Obama accepts a challenge to participate in Lincoln-Douglas style debates.
"I promise you, if you will help me on January 3, if I end up as the nominee, in my acceptance speech, if the president has not yet agreed, I will announce from that day forward for the rest of the campaign, the White House will be my scheduler," Gingrich said. "And wherever the president appears, I will appear four hours later."

Begala is correct on this one
Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 10:33am.
I can't stand Begala, but I agree with his bottom line on this one.
Gingrich is a nightmare for the GOP. He's carrying more baggage than the cargo hold on a 747, but more importantly for conservatives, Gingrich is a Beltway insider and has been for most of his adult life. He epitomizes what is wrong with Washington. He can certainly debate Obama into the ground, but that's not enough.
If Gingrich wins the nomination, I think Obama has a better than 50-50 chance to get re-elected.
For the first time ever, I tend to agree with the "Forehead".

McCain was a Godsend to the "Demonocrats" in 2008 and Newt would be a Godsend to them in 2012.
All those people who have been looking for the anti-Romney better wake up and support Mitt unless they want four more years of what we have now, only worse.
I hope many of them watched his interview on Hannity last night. IMHO, he will be an excellent president, someone we all can support.
If not Newt then..., WHO!
Submitted by bertkillian on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 6:32pm.
Romney? Seriously? He is another McCain; why the hell do you think the press is leaving him alone for now? IF he gets nominated, those liars will have him sitting in the corner flicking his lip in about a month. Then what? There has to be someone with the balls to duel these pricks from the press and make them look stupid instead of the other way around. Hasn't happened yet; but, Newt is closest so far.
If a true conservative candidate doesn't rise up, you can count on 4 more glorious years of Barack. Think about it.., making you dread dinner tonight? Romney ain't it.
Therein lies the dilemma for the GOP
Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 11:25am.
Considering the weak position that Obama is in, this is rather underpowered field of candidates with which to unseat him.
A person of Reagan's stature would beat Obama hands down. But these candidates leave it open. The demoralized Democrats realize that Obama has a chance as long as the Republican candidate is mediocre or vulnerable to attack.
We've already seen the attacks begin on whomever is polling first in the field. Gingrich is just the latest target.
I posted months ago that the GOP candidate could be someone who hadn't thrown his/her hat in the ring yet, and I think there's still a slight chance, though the window is closing as we approach the Iowa caucuses.
There's also an outside chance that if a clear winner hasn't been determined by the end of the primaries, and delegates are freed up after the first vote, a dark horse may emerge. That would be Obama's worst nightmare.
