Chris Matthews Slams Obama: He's Got 'The Worst Kind of a Notion of the Presidency'
Chris Matthews on Saturday slammed Barack Obama in his worst criticism to date of the man that used to give him a thrill up his leg.
Speaking to the host of MSNBC's Weekends with Alex Witt, Matthews excoriated the President saying, "The day he got inaugurated, he sent us all home and said, 'Thank you, now watch how smart I am.' That's the worst kind of a notion of the presidency" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
ALEX WITT, HOST: You say, “Nations die or thrive on the ability and judgment of their leaders to stir them at perilous times.” Does Barack Obama have that ability to pass the proper judgment, to properly analyze and to stir this nation?
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, he has great analytical ability. Clearly has made the right judgments in his executive leadership. He has moved us very effectively in self-defense in fighting terrorism. I'm not sure he's able to move the country. He had that ability as a candidate, and then the day he was inaugurated, with the Mall filled with people, African-Americans and everyone else, he sent us all home. It was the worst mistake of his presidency. The day he got inaugurated, he sent us all home and said, “Thank you, now watch how smart I am.” That's the worst kind of a notion of the presidency.
The presidency's not about being smart. Most of our great presidents have not been that brilliant. Kennedy wasn’t brilliant. Roosevelt certainly wasn’t brilliant. Truman wasn’t. But what they did was they lead the American people. They lead us. This is so simple. If I could say one thing to Barack Obama, “Stop showing us how smart you are and lead us. Ask us to do something. Pull us behind you. Enlist us in the service of our country. Ask us to do something." There is no Peace Corps. There is no Special Forces. There is no 50 mile hikes. There’s no moon program. There’s nothing to root for.
What are we trying to do in this administration? Why does he want a second term? Would he tell us? What's he going to do in the second term? More of this? Is this it? Is this as good as it gets? Where are we going? Are we going to do something the second term? He has yet to tell us. He has not said one thing about what he would do in the second term. He never tells us what he is going to do with reforming our healthcare systems, Medicare, Medicaid, how is going to reform Social Security. Is he going to deal with long-term debt? How? Is he going to reform the tax system? How? Just tell us. Why are we in this fight with him? Just tell us, Commander, give us our orders and tell us where we’re going, give us the mission. And he hasn't done it.
And I think it's the people around him, too many people around, they’re little kids with propellers on their heads. They're all virtual. Politics, this social networking, I get these e-mails, you probably get them. I'm tired of getting them. Stop giving them to me. I want to meet people. Their idea of running a campaign is a virtual universe of sending e-mails around to people. No it's not. It's meetings with people, it’s forging alliances. It's White House meetings and dinner parties that go on till midnight, and he should be sitting late at night now with senators and members of Congress and governors working together on how they're going to win this political fight that's coming.
I don't have a sense that he's ever had a meeting. I hear stories that you will not believe. Not a single phone call since the last election.
WITT: Tell me one.
MATTHEWS: They don't call. He never calls. That's the, that’s the message. Members of Congress, I keep asking, “When did you hear from him last?”
WITT: Silence.
MATTHEWS: He doesn't like their company.
WITT: You've just…
MATTHEWS: That's a problem, by the way.
WITT: You're just giving a bunch of contradictions in terms of the differences between Jack Kennedy and Barack Obama. Are there comparisons?
MATTHEWS: Differences.
WITT: Right, differences…
MATTHEWS: Well, they’re both young, they’re both very well-educated, they’re both idealistic, they’re both incredibly well spoken, articulate, whatever the word is. They have a great sense of poetry. They know how to say the right things about our country. Obama is wonderfully skilled at evoking what America’s all about. I think he's great at it. He thrills me when he does it. In fact, that's one of the reasons I was inspired by him. He talked about our country. He evokes our country from his background. But once having won the office he seemed to think that that was the end of it in terms of his connection to the American people.
Don't you feel, I think everybody feels an absence of communication from the time he's been elected. And it's not about not being left-wing enough or too left. That's not his problem. It's connection. And Mrs. Obama, she's an amazing asset. And what has she done? Obesity? How about connecting with the American people about being Americans? I don't think she's, I don't think she's happy. I don't think they like being in the White House. The American people can tell that. They don't seem thrilled at the fact the American people have selected them as our first family. I don't sense the gratitude, the happiness level, the thrill of being president. Bill Clinton loved being president every minute and you knew it.
WITT: You did get that sense.
MATTHEWS: And that's what the American people liked. They like knowing their President's happy.
Interesting these statements were aired early Saturday morning when few people would see them. Would Matthews say these things in prime time?
Assuming this is really what he thinks, will it matter at all once a Republican presidential nominee has been named and we're in the heart of the campaign next year?
Or will Matthews as the dutiful shill continue to attack Obama's opponents while speaking glowingly of the man he's currently complaining about in order to assure a second term irrespective of the short-comings herein described?
Yes, that's a rhetorical question.

Just after the "Supercommittee" thing was voted on and set up - I send Pres. Obama a letter letting him know that was "the last straw" and what a disappointment he was. I told him that this time around, as was the case for most all of my life prior to 2008, I was afraid that I would once again be simply voting for the person who I felt to be "the lesser of 2 evils" in 2012. I suppose I still feel that way, as does much of his "base".
I suppose he's still got time to prove himself if he wins a 2nd term. And I'm torn between the realization that he lost control of Congress within a year, and the need to pander to the middle that any president faces once in office. This isn't the place to be singing my praises or pointing out all the positive things, so I won't even bother except to say that anyone who still calls Obama a leftist must be so far to the right they're off the charts. As it turned out, the man couldn't have been more centrist and willing to reach across the aisle to at least try to get both sides to work with each other. It was mostly the "Party of No" Republicans who wanted no part of it - and despite the argument I'll get here, polls consistently show that most Americans feel the same way.
Keith's Countdown show is still on cable TV each night on the new CurrentTV network. According to Wikipedia... Current TV, or Current, is a media company led by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and businessman Joel Hyatt. Comcast owns a ten percent stake of Current's parent company, Current Media LLC.

I won't even get into the whole "party of no" thing because I think i am about as polar opposite from you on that as possible,
But I do have a serious question.
From reading your posts I get the impression that you are a little left of center, possible a whole lot but that doesn't really matter, what I am curious about is as a Lib what is your opinion about Keith's show? Is he in line with the left or is a little out there or is he way out there?
I used to watch his show at least a few times a week

I'm sure you'll be hearing a lot about the "Party of No" over the next year. I'm sure ads will be reminding you of the fact that since our "Halfrican-American" president was elected, the Teapublican "patriots" have expressed their "hope he fails" since the day he was elected and filibusters in Congress have gone through the roof relative to past Congress'. Aghh election years - the perfect time to reminisce. ;)
I don't watch much entertainment TV - and so only have basic cable of which CurrentTV is not part of the package. I've visited the website and it looks like the Countdown show is unchanged, including the Worst Persons segment.;) The big difference is Big Brother is Big Al and he can say what he wants - just like they do on Fox. Olbermann broke a lot Republican dirt on his MSNBC show - that's why they hate him so much. Long before it was fashionable he was especially tough on calling out Fox News lies and hypocrisy (most notably O'Reilly - but Beck and Hannity also.) I mean, how could you not like that? LOL
The political spectrum is all relative - both to a global perspective and personal perception. Like I say, it's been my experience that most Teapublicans think that anything not far-right is far-left. Personally, I'd put Keith just left of center - about on par with most of the rest of the MSNBC crowd. He just tended to get a bit more emotional or animated than the rest, though it seems like they all took up the slack since he's gone.
I'm sort of befuddled by the obsession with Chris Mathews around here. Rachel Maddow laid into Newt Gingrich Friday night to the point that makes Matthews' slams on Newt a few days earlier seem like childsplay. I guess they've been silent on it because it was all the indefensible truth (as Dr. Maddow tends to be).
You know, what's really funny is that when talking to anyone from Europe about American politics they'll say that in that part of the world the U.S. Democratic Party would be considered "right wing".
You people - no trash that - I'll stop with the "you people" and say "most Americans" - have no idea what far-left really is.
(BTW I just found that "Teapublicans" word and decide it appropriate - and easier to stop myself should I accidentally start typing the word that I used ONCE and now has "killa' out for blood. I guess I should try to use that instead of 'you people' or 'you folks' too.)

"You people - no trash that - I'll stop with the "you people" and say "most Americans" - have no idea what far-left really is."
The Truth: Only about 15 to 20% of "most Americans" identify themselves as "far left" so that would mean that "most Americans" not only know what far left is but also don't identify with it. Keep trolling Leon (or Leon Puppet) and maybe you will catch a few! LOL!

And if you think anyone in the Democratic party in America is "far-left", well I suppose you're free to laugh at your own ignorance all you want. I never made ANY claim whatsoever as to the numbers of people who call themselves anythig, did I? You can call or label yourself whatever you want - whatever makes you feel the most like a "real American" I guess - but labeling everyone and everything not right-wing as "far-left" is a bit of a stretch. You're the one whose definition, preception, or beliefs skew the numbers, not mine.

If Obama was half as smart as he thinks he is he would have known this from day one and governed accordingly. Instead he decided to go with a super majority and tried to force through his agenda. Apparently he wasn’t aware that people who voted for you often voted against the other guy.

Obama to GOP: ‘I Won’
Jonathan Weisman reports on the White House.
The top congressional leaders from both parties gathered at the White House for a working discussion over the shape and size of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan. The meeting was designed to promote bipartisanship.
But Obama showed that in an ideological debate, he’s not averse to using a jab.
Challenged by one Republican senator over the contents of the package, the new president, according to participants, replied: “I won.”
With those two words — “I won” — the Democratic president let the Republicans know that debate has been put to rest Nov. 4 .
to attempt to rewrite history in the day of the internet is kinda stupid ya think?
Obam never tried to working across lines until he got his but handed to him Nov. 2010 and as we all recall his idea of working across lines consisted of calling 50% of Americans terrorist and hostage takers.

When are you Teapublicans going to quit pretending you represent a majority? Regardless your so-called 2010 "mandate", you should realize by now what a gross misread of the "message sent" that label really was.
The longer it takes you to stop the denial, the better the chances that the pendulim swing of a disfavorable opinion of Teapublicans will continue. It's time you come to grips with the fact that, despite his low polling numbers, President Obama is still more popular than "The Tea Party".
I know you won't like my source (you don't like any source other than right-wing propaganda) but...
Americans Dislike the Tea Party More Than Ever Before
The upstart conservative movement was all the rage in the summer of 2009, and channeled that energy into a wave of victories in the 2010 midterm elections, sending dozens of hard-line, intransigent Republicans to Congress. However, a new CNN/ORC poll (PDF) out Tuesday shows that the pendulum of public opinion has swung away from the tea party.
Just 28 percent of Americans hold favorable views of the tea party, an all-time low in the 19 months that CNN/ORC pollsters have gauged Americans' feelings about the movement. At the same time, 53 percent of Americans think poorly of the tea party, an all-time high. According to CNN/ORC, the movement's popularity peaked in the spring of 2010, when 38 percent of Americans said they liked the tea party and only 36 percent said they didn't.
CNN's polls aren't the only ones to pick up a decline in support for the tea party. In a pair of Pew Research Center polls conducted in February 2010 and August 2011, disapproval of the tea party jumped from 18 percentage points; the percentage of those who said they liked the movement increased from 33 to 36 percent. Washington Post-ABC and Wall Street Journal-NBC polls also found declining support for the tea party from 2009 to 2010.

I can go back to April to show the trend, but this is how it looks today. This study and graph from late August shows just how many of "we the people" approve of your ideology.

The oil company that has shelled out the cash to buy all that equipment to keep all those 200,000 people working is going to rust away.... No no all that equipment will be sold as scrap to pay back the bank... Not likely that any of that equipment will even exist in a year.
Like the 300 shops that built the F-22, all gone, sawed up to scrap, Opps not quite yet. That hot rod jet is still being manufactured .. In O'bamas 2nd term, he'll grant a F-22 jobs killer bill. Maybe some supersonic stealth UAV will be working by then. Heaven forbid built by a Private contractor, in the free enterprise system.
Canada shall go forth and sell some of that oil to China..Sure they will sell to commies killers of 100,000,000 humans invasive species that they are..right clevester.

FYI I was born in the early 1950s - and I don't have an "online profile" anywhere on the internet. Or do you find it shocking that I'm not a populist corporatist Facebook sheep? I've never even watched "American Idol" or "Dancing With The Stars" either - (we don't get those shows here in Cuba). How's that for proof that I'm a lefty communist? I can only imagine the Bircher visions running through your paranoid heads. LOL

Clevie probably doesn't realize that you have to log back in on occasion, for example, if the power is suddenly cut from your computer, which I'm sure is part of the problem when he stops pedaling. I mean,... I'm sure his house is supplied by bicycle power, anything more would be hypocrisy of his positions, despite his Union jackpot and "cadillac" health-care. And a leftist would never be a hypocrite.
Still waiting for some replies from Clevie on earlier threads where I felt like slappin' him around a little bit, but alas, he's ignoring me. I guess we're not friends anymore.

3 years ago, you could have checked o'bama's political record and discovered, then, that all he does is vote "present". This was the case in the Illinois senate, and the US senate. That's not the mark of a leader.
Here's a December, 2007 NYT article documenting o'bama's Illinois senate votes. Even the NYT sounded an alarm about this guy. Especially telling is when o'bama's friends have to go out of their way to explicitly state “It’s just plain wrong to imply that voting present reflected a lack of leadership. In fact, it was the exact opposite.” But that's been o'bama's MO all along, hasn't it? To take an obvious fact and lie about it.
Want an example? On a sex crime bill, o'bama cast the lone present vote in a 58-to-0 vote. The bill passed 112-0-0 in the House and 58-0-1 in the Senate. o;bama said he believed that the bill violated the First Amendment.
Chris -- even I knew about o'bama's voting record. And I'm not a journalist. You are -- or at least you're supposed to be. Maybe you should get in another line of work, eh?

It's so pathetically obvious, that I'm sure Obama orders them to give him a half-hearted slap every so often, just to 'prove' that they're not his slaves.

he's merely a well-trained useful idiot who has been groomed since childhood by socialists who think they know better than history. How many times have you heard a whackademic claim "genuine socialism has never been tried" in defense of their beloved Marxism? They all think they know some secret that has eluded the rest of mankind throughout the history of socialism. Obysmal is no different--he's too stupid (or well indoctrinated) to learn from history. THAT is the danger he poses to the American way.

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 10:11am.
Come on, it's as clear as the nose on his face. (I'll address some of his moronic commentary in a bit).
He's saying things that he knows the Obammyites will become inflamed over, so he'll get more buzz for his new book on JFK. Because his last book didn't go over so well.
For those of you who don't remember, it was called "Life's a Campaign"....and he went on the Job Stewart show, where he was positively eviscerated in some of the most hilarious (for conservatives) video out there on the intertubes. If you've never seen it, click the link, and if you have, click it and enjoy it all over again.
In fact, Jon Stewart humiliated Matthews to the point that his paperback issue was renamed to save his dignity! Read it and LOL!
Chrissy's little interview with Alex Witt is merely a puff piece, particularly in light of the shellacking he took at the hands of Jon Stewart.
What Matthews says about Obama, as usual, is as laughable as his "tingles" comment. The intro alone is worthy of major eye-rolls from anyone with half a brain tied behind their backs (for you trolls, yes, I'm talking about conservatives).
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, he has great analytical ability. Clearly has made the right judgments in his executive leadership. He has moved us very effectively in self-defense in fighting terrorism.
Wrong, wrong, and wrong. My stupid cat has more analytical ability, AND executive judgment that Barack. And his big "victories" over terrorism have nothing, nada, zip, zero to do with Barry. He was cornered into giving the go for the Bin Ladin hit. He is taking the credit for the Special Forces which have taken years and years to build (hint, more than three). I'll stop now, too early to rant, but you get my drift.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: "Well, he has great analytical ability. Clearly has made the right judgments in his executive leadership."
Clearly? Name one.
MATTHEWS: ". . . He has moved us very effectively in self-defense in fighting terrorism. . . "
Really? What are the metrics? I guess he did close GTMO like he promised - - - oh, wait, forget I wrote that.
MATTHEWS: ". . . I'm not sure he's able to move the country. He had that ability as a candidate, and then the day he was inaugurated, with the Mall filled with people, African-Americans and everyone else, he sent us all home. It was the worst mistake of his presidency. The day he got inaugurated, he sent us all home and said, “Thank you, now watch how smart I am.” That's the worst kind of a notion of the presidency."
So cheerleader Matthews, who saw in Obama a black JFK and who's overt support for his candidacy contributed to Obama's victory, is now dealing with the realization that Obama hasn't lived up to the expectations of white liberal metrosexuals. Where was Matthews' "great analytical ability" -- nada.
But I will agree with Matthews new assessment: This is as good as Obama gets, and he isn't pleasing conservatives, indepenents, and even old Leftists like Matthews,

jumping off the Obama bandwagon and is ready to jump on the Hillary bandwagon.
I will check and see if anyone here thinks that too.
I checked. No one else here thinks he is going to switch to Clinton.
Second theory. After praising Obama to the skies, Obama ignores him. The worst thing you can do to a liberal is ignore him. Perhaps that is the reason he is off the Obama bandwagon.
Third theory. Matthews likes attention so he says the most outrageous things he can think of. After saying outrageous things in support of Obama, he now thinks it is advantageous to say outrageous things in opposition of Obama.
Fourth theory. In the past he has always been in Obama's corner. He now sees that Obama is going down the tubes and he doesn't want to go down the tubes with him.

Strangely though, much of the anger is that he's not doing anything to help the protesters. The "police brutality" of course, is because of Republicans. I'm not sure how that works, aren't cops union?

An outsider's POV
Submitted by surfergirl54 on Mon, 11/21/2011 - 6:00am.
Is Chris Matthews for real? I am an outsider here, and in fact doofus has just been visiting my country, even stopped over in the city where I live... only to have the most left-wing Marxist red-haired lying witch fawning all over him.
What gets me is that this man who really is extremely stupid is acclaimed as being smart. Really? He is a ditherer. He could not make the necessary snap decisions to save himself. Look how he stuffed up on the Libyan situation, leaving any kind of action until the very last matter... and yes, that was critical. Look at the way he did not consult your Congress over what action could be taken, to get approval. No wonder so many people are hopping mad about that.... (and I speak as someone who approved the actual NATO mission). He screwed up when he pulled back. He could not make a proper decision to save his own skin.
Now this man is a Marxist. He is extreme left, and if someone makes the silly claim that an extremist like Østupid is centrist, then all I can do is laugh in their face. It just is not the truth. The man was raised as a Marxist in a Marxist loving family, and he is friends with the Weather Underground terrorists, William Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn, who are also Marxists. Anyone who endorses the Occubaggers is a Marxist.
There is not a lot that I can say about the killing of OBL. It certainly would have been better if he was taken alive, just like with that other terrorist Daffy Duck, who actually deserved his end (you will not get sympathy out of me when it comes to Daffy Duck). Where Østupid has really screwed up, is the refusal to release those photographs of the dead OBL.
Most of you have mentioned some of the more pathetic economic decisions that have been made. I speak as someone who has an economics degree (for what it is worth) and to be honest Østupid deserves a grading of F for his understanding of economic realities. How pathetic that he goes to Europe and lectures the Socialist Europeans and here he is with the worst burgeoning debt in the USA since I have been alive. His policies are totally irresponsible.
