Steve Jobs Told Obama in 2010 'You're Headed for a One-term Presidency'

The Huffington Post has gotten a copy of the soon to be released biography of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, and there are some snippets that are destined to anger Obama-loving media members across the fruited plain.

According to author Walter Isaacson, Jobs told the President in the fall of 2010, "You're headed for a one-term presidency":

Jobs, who was known for his prickly, stubborn personality, almost missed meeting President Obama in the fall of 2010 because he insisted that the president personally ask him for a meeting. Though his wife told him that Obama "was really psyched to meet with you," Jobs insisted on the personal invitation, and the standoff lasted for five days. When he finally relented and they met at the Westin San Francisco Airport, Jobs was characteristically blunt. He seemed to have transformed from a liberal into a conservative.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama at the start of their meeting, insisting that the administration needed to be more business-friendly. As an example, Jobs described the ease with which companies can build factories in China compared to the United States, where "regulations and unnecessary costs" make it difficult for them.

Jobs also criticized America's education system, saying it was "crippled by union work rules," noted Isaacson. "Until the teachers' unions were broken, there was almost no hope for education reform." Jobs proposed allowing principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.

If there are more jabs at Obama in this book, you have to wonder who's going to take the heat - Jobs or Isaacson.

Just remember how Ron Suskind was treated last month for what he said about the President in his new book "Confidence Men."

Stay tuned.

This evening on ABC World

Submitted by kareling on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 7:25pm.

This evening on ABC World News Tonight, George Stephanopoulos (in for Diane Sawyer) did a segment on this book. He mentioned a health care choice Mr. Jobs made that may have shortened his life; and the things that inspired the creation of his first computer. But of course he said nothing about a meeting with Obama.

Do ya really think Obama liked him? I say he'd only like him if his last name was UNIONS.

Obama and fund the Democrat Party?

From author Walter Isaacson:

Though Jobs was not that impressed by Obama, later telling Isaacson that his focus on the reasons that things can't get done "infuriates" him, they kept in touch and talked by phone a few more times. Jobs even offered to help create Obama's political ads for the 2012 campaign. "He had made the same offer in 2008, but he'd become annoyed when Obama's strategist David Axelrod wasn't totally deferential," writes Isaacson. Jobs later told the author that he wanted to do for Obama what the legendary "morning in America" ads did for Ronald Reagan.

My guess is Jobs was still a pragmatic businessman. Knowing full well that even a modest donation to Obama's campaign would save his company millions, instead of just one more “Axelrod-sponsored” regulation---really a simple economic decision, even if it’s a form of extortion.

10,000 times better than an iphone

Submitted by redhunter on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 10:34pm.

Although Jobs had his failings he did have some perspectives that were spot on. In addition, to this one-timer statement, a close friend said the following as quoted in the NYT: "I asked him if he was glad that he had kids, and he said, 'It's 10,000 times better than anything I've ever done'."

How did the Huffington Post get a copy of a book that hasn't even been released yet? Haven't they heard of "copyrights?"

Jobs has a good point about longer school hours. Unfortunately, the ACLU would probably find it inhumane to the little gang-members in our American school system. After all, these children need time to get into trouble, right?
