Multimillionaire OWS Supporter Russell 'I Want to Pay More Taxes' Simmons Now Says 'I Don't Pay Taxes'
Multimillionaire Occupy Wall Street supporter Russell Simmons made the media circuit in recent weeks bragging about how he wants the government to raise his taxes.
Yet on MSNBC's PoliticsNation Wednesday, the hip-hop mogul told Al Sharpton, "I don’t pay taxes...I won’t give my money to war machine and to other things" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
RUSSELL SIMMONS AT OCCUPY WALL STREET, OCTOBER 10, 2011: I’ve been here since kind of the beginning…I come because I’m, I’m, I love their intention and their effort and their courage and I’m just a big supporter of the work these young people are doing. They want the money out of Wall Street. They want the power to the people. It’s an old chant…I’m happy to pay more taxes, though. I’m here to pay more taxes.
Nine days later on MSNBC:
SIMMONS: And I believe there’s a possibility, maybe a constitutional amendment banning corporations from bribing politicians to go to war or bribing politicians to lengthen prison sentences so they can make money in the prison industrial complexes or moving jobs offshore or putting loopholes in the tax law so I don’t have to pay taxes. It’s you know, these are things that need to be addressed, that the reason that I don’t pay taxes is because there’s someone pushing a politician to leave a loophole or to promote a hole in the market that I can, can squeeze my company through. And of course, no one will pay more taxes. The conservatives always say to me, would I, why don’t I just write a check for more taxes.
AL SHARPTON, HOST: Right. Right.
SIMMONS: Well, no, I won’t give my money to war machine and to other things, but if it will help the education and the health care for people who are locked out, of course I want to pay more taxes.
That's what Simmons has been saying for weeks: "I want to pay more taxes." This began on September 28 when he wrote on his GlobalGrind blog:
I believe in a nation where everyone gets a fair share of the fruits of our labor and where everyone pays a fair share for what they receive.
I am asking the United States government to raise my taxes and not allow the Republicans to use this economic recession as an opportunity to strip the basic programs that protect our most vulnerable.
So, on September 28, he specifically asked the U.S. government to raise his taxes.
Yet on October 19, he told Sharpton, "The reason that I don’t pay taxes is because there’s someone pushing a politician to leave a loophole or to promote a hole in the market that I can, can squeeze my company through. And of course, no one will pay more taxes...I won’t give my money to war machine and to the other things."
Is there a law requiring wealthy people like Simmons to exploit these loopholes so that they can squeeze their companies through and not pay taxes?
Certainly not. But they do because as Simmons made clear, he doesn't want to give to "the war machine."
I guess he doesn't know that less than 20 percent of the current budget goes to national defense. By contrast, 65 percent or almost two-thirds goes to what's called Human Resources such as education, training, employment, social services, health, income security, welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.
But he'll still do everything within his power to pay no taxes despite almost two-thirds of that money going to causes he claims to support.
What the shills in the media don't understand is that even if taxes were raised on folks like Simmons, they'd continue to find ways to avoid them. Their internal rationalization would be "the war machine," but in the end, it's really their own greed.
You don't amass a $325 million net worth without it.

Of course Simmons wants to be able to pick and choose what his money supports, which is why he previously said that he won't voluntarily pay more taxes: he prefers to give to charities. That's a luxury he denies to the rest of us. People don't have money to give to charities because they are overburdened by taxes.
So nice of these liberal snobs to continually lecture us on why we should do the things they don't have to.

I've made very spare donations to charity in the last couple of years since things kept going up and up, and I mean all things, groceries, gas, etc, basically the cost of living. Imagine that, we have to pay more for living.
I used to go to some charity events that my friends would hold once a year during the summer, but have not done it in the last couple of years(reasons above), and even then, the number of people coming to those events have gone down, which in turn affects the amounts donated. I'm not sure that there will be another event next year because there was such a poor turnout this past summer.
I suspect this might be true all over the country of similar charity events.

I'm NOT a class warfare guy - and I don't care one way or the other about Simmons and his success - fine with me - I've never spent a cent on his stuff. But if the guy is going to talk out of both sides of his mouth, and be a typical rich lib hypocrite, he's going to get called out on it.
Now, I'm going surfing on a beautiful Thursday morning here on an outer island of Hawaii. What are you doing??? Never mind, I don't care.............

I love that movie, Ms. Rad.........it's a classic. So is 'Spinal Tap'. Living here in Hawaii, we have our own language also - which would sound foreign to a lot of mainlanders................it's called 'pidgen'. I know it well, since I've lived here my whole life - even though I'm a 'haole' (Caucasion). And I usually speak the King's English (sort of), but when I'm dealing with some sub-contractors or workers or other local types who do speak pidgen, I can bust it out as well as anyone. Actually, I have two Hawaiian brothers who work for me (when we actually have work!!!), and they were raised to speak good English - but they are also quite sharp and quick and caustic, so quite often we actually have ongoing conversations to where we take our local pidgen to a NEW LOW!!! We have come up with phrases and sayings and words that some locals can't even understand - but they don't know what to say about it, because it is coming out of the mouths of Hawaiians!!! It's actually quite a riot!!!

I don't understand you folks argument? I agree with him, I own a business, Its for profit. Nobody said people shouldn't make profits - but what does that have to do with nonsense tax loopholes. We should close the loopholes and lower the overall rate.

I have paid taxes every single year I have owned businesses. This year not as much as an example in 2009, because my evil profits are lower (much lower), now than then.

Typical Liberal POS in my opinion.
They always want to play fast and loose with other peoples money.
All you have to do is to barely scratch the surface of any of these scumbags and you will see that they are greedy, whiny, douche nozzles that screech, squeal and moan about Evil Corporations, then take advantage of every single tax loophole they can find to avoid paying their "fair share".
This is exactly what these mindless morons in the OWS movement are protesting (at least its what they say they are protesting) cause if thats what they were really upset about they would have torn this multimillionaire a new a-hole just for showing his face at one of their gathering of mindless robots.
No what these pukes are looking for is for Uncle Sugar to hand them a blank paycheck that draws from the taxpayers wallet. Pukes like Simmons can parrot this as much as they like because they know at the end of the day their "fair share" will be equal to exactly what they are paying now...nothing.

He is worth millions, how is he playing fast and loose with other's money?
There are too many loopholes in our tax code; period. For liberals, for conservatives, for green companies, for oil companies. Lower the overall tax rate across the board, and end all the loopholes and deductions. Simple answer. Its what liberals on OWS have been saying, its what Paul Ryan said, its what Obama's deficit commission said, its what the gang of six said, its what President Obama said, its what conservatives have said.
But we can't ever get anything done - because people like you care more about if he's a liberal or conservative than if what he is saying is right or wrong.
I highly doubt Obama ever said that.
Submitted by UpNorth on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 2:48pm.
Close the loopholes, so everyone pays? He'd never say that, he'd lose what's left of his base. And, the dems would never stand for it....
And, nope, "liberals" at the Flea Bag parties haven't been saying it, they've been saying "Gimme, gimme, gimme". You really are cognitively impaired, aren't you?

Submitted by ThePickle on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 3:45pm.
It is about the rank hypocrisy and double talk... NOT what he does or doesn't pay in taxes.
The very fact that a multimillionaire, who takes advantage of every loophole available, thinks that he is some how qualified to denigrate others, that do the exact same thing as him, speaks to a mind boggling case of cranial rectal inversion.
As to Liberals playing fast and loose with other peoples money, do I really need to point out the 14 trillion dollars of debt we are now saddled with thanks to Liberal policies. Do I really need to point out that the Liberal fiscal solution is to simply "Tax the Rich".
And did you even read the article wherein Simmons fairly clearly states that he doesn't pay taxes NOT because they left loopholes that he CHOSE to exploit, but because he didn't like how his money would have been spent.
As to what you are advocating, personally I would back that plan or a similar plan as long as it included things like closing the loophole that has been allowing those that pay nothing in taxes to receive thousands of dollars of other peoples money in the form of tax credits. Things like the E.I.C. and the Child Tax Credit. Both of these are simply another form of welfare and represent the worst of redistributionist ideals. The idea that those of us with more are somehow obligated to prop up those with less...to the point of the Government "confiscating" a portion of our wealth with the sole intention of simply giving it to someone else to spend as they see fit.
Green companies?
Submitted by UpNorth on Fri, 10/21/2011 - 9:05pm.
They don't need loopholes, Obama gives them cash by the truckload. Why would they even look for loopholes, take the money, spend the money, pocket the money, then declare insolvency. Easy as getting a federal loan.
And, from what I can deduce from what the Flea Baggers are saying, it's "college grad, will work for $75K", or it's time to start the revolution, or I want someone to pay my tuition.
And, no Obama has never said lower the tax rate for everyone.
